Chart of the Day writes: For some perspective on the current stock market rally and how it compares the 1929-1932 bear market (which also included bank failures, bankruptcies, severe stock market declines, etc.), today's chart illustrates the duration (calendar days) and magnitude (percent gain) of all significant Dow rallies that occurred during the 1929-1932 bear market (solid blue dots).

What Can Stop This Stock Market Rally? / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market
You hear a lot of talk these days about what could possibly stop the current stock market rally given that we've clearly passed the "acute" phase of the financial crisis and, quite literally, there is no place to go but up for many economic indicators.
The term "statistical recovery" is bandied about quite a bit by doubters of the recent move up for equities and for many very good reasons such as the following:

Stock Market Rally, Is There A Cloud In The Silver Lining? / Stock-Markets / Stock Market Valuations
My brother Jim has been trading the markets for over thirty years. Yesterday, we got involved in a conversation about the markets and the stock market in particular. He always does a good amount of research to support his own trading decisions and since sharing observations is one of the reasons I started this blog, I thought we should at least be aware of these points.

Stock Market Rally Engineered by the Government / Stock-Markets / Market Manipulation
Bob Chapman writes: Since March we have watched a stock market rally borne by low volume and short covering. The gains are reminiscent of the rallies of 1930 and 1932. What you are witnessing is a rally engineered by our government. If you watch the tape and you can read it you can see exactly what they are doing, and how they are doing it. Yes, it is legal under an Executive Order singed by President Ronald Reagan in the aftermath of the October 19th, 1997 collapse of the stock market. It was named the “Working Group on Financial Markets” and was to be used for such emergencies. Unfortunately, like many things in government, the mission of the “Plunge Protection Team” has been distorted. For over the last more than ten years it has been used to manipulate markets 24/7. Thus, what you are witnessing is a sucker rally, which has little hope of lasting.

Looming Financial and Economic Crises, Gold the Golden Exit / Stock-Markets / Credit Crisis 2009
To survive a transformative crisis, institutions, nations, and individuals must all change. Those who do, will. Those who don’t, won’t.
In July, Vienna’s Erste Bank, released its 2009 Special Report on Gold, In Gold We Trust. The analysis of the current gold market and its future direction by Ronald-Peter Stöferle and his colleagues at Erste Bank is commendable both for its information and its timeliness; for, today, the future of gold is inextricably interwoven with everyone’s future—whether they know it or not .

Near-term Peak Emerging for S&P 500 Stock Market Index / Stock-Markets / Stock Index Trading
Let's notice (blue boxes) that the past two sessions in the cash SPX (from a candlestick perspective) appear to be a mirror image of the early July bottom period. That is to say that action on Monday and Tuesday left behind "distribution candles," which in English means that the vast majority of the intraday buying occurred well above BOTH the opening AND closing prices (very small "Real Body" for you candle afficionados).

Options traders provide one community of opinions worth considering when evaluating short-term prospects for stocks. While they as a group could be totally wrong, they differ importantly from analysts and academics, because they are risking their money on their opinions.

Stock Markets Selling on the Bernanke News / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Stateside Bernanke gets an encore, the Case-Shiller shows house prices were up MoM, consumer confidence soared 6.7 points through the 50 level and yet stocks finished only marginally ahead. Is the fat lady about to sing on the overbought summer rally? Maybe it will be called the Bernanke top in years to come?

Ineffcient Stock Market Remains in Buy Mode / Stock-Markets / Stock Index Trading
Stock Barometer Analysis - The barometer is in Buy Mode. The Stock Barometer is my proprietary market timing system. The direction, slope and level of the Stock Barometer determine our outlook. For example, if the barometer line is moving down, we are in Sell Mode. A Buy or Sell Signal is triggered when the indicator clearly changes direction. Trend and support can override the barometer signals.

Manipulated Stock Market, Watch the last 30 minutes of Trading / Stock-Markets / Market Manipulation
Through this year and the last, the last 30 minutes of trading has been a critical point for manipulation. Countless times the market has shown signs of breaking below critical resistance points, only to have stocks rally sharply in the final 30 minutes of trading. Indeed, there were even several days in which stocks actually reversed losses to close at a gain all in the final 10 minutes.

Stock Market Negative Divergence Signals Caution / Stock-Markets / Stock Index Trading
One of the things smart investors do, is to keep an eye out for "Negative Divergences". Market pullbacks are often seen right after a Negative Divergence fails to the downside.
As an analyst, I look for the possibility of negative divergences developing on my radar screen.

Buying into the Stock Market Rally, Hook, Line, and Sinker / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market
Belief that the worst is behind is now nearly universal. Mickey Mouse, aka Ben Bernanke, even has himself fooled. He was reappointed today as grand wizard (see Bernanke's Self-Promotional Reappointment Campaign A Stunning Success) and in general people are feeling pretty good about it.

Proving The Effectiveness Of The Only Known Antidote For Economic Suicide / Stock-Markets / Credit Crisis 2009
Putting aside colorful sensationalism (tales of greed, fraud, and incompetence), the instrument of the recent suicide attempt was banks lending money against collateral and not taking reasonable or responsible steps to make sure that the value of collateral was more than the loans that were outstanding, at the point in time loans defaulted.

Historical Stocks Bear and Bull Markets Compared / Stock-Markets / US Stock Markets
Nilus Mattive writes: It seems as though just about everyone has now completely written off the bear market as “so last quarter.” Isn’t it amazing what a couple months of upticks can do?
Don’t get me wrong. I’m as happy as anyone that this rally has had staying power. It means my favorite dividend stocks are increasing in value!

Deluge Ahead or Smooth Sailing for the Stock Market? / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bull Market
Many traders, given all the statistics, trends, and patterns at their disposal, have been reluctant to buy stocks for a while now. Momentum traders would contest, however, that by not buying, you would have missed out on some pretty decent gains for stocks over the past few months. It’s true- even your most reliable indicators often will tell you when to enter a trade, but they won’t always tell you how long a market may stay in a trend. The old axiom about the market remaining irrational longer than you can remain solvent comes to mind. But that begs the question: Is the market irrational here?
