Are Stock Market Investors Being Set Up For Another Fall? / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
In the early 1930’s, after the 1929 crash, Wall Street could not get nervous investors interested in stocks again. However, with interest rates dropped to extreme lows in the Great Depression, those who still had money were eager to invest in something that would provide more income than they could receive on savings accounts. As a result Wall Street had no trouble selling them bonds.Read full article... Read full article...

Mega-Battle Investor Opportunities and Threats: Gold, Debt, Markets, Politics / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2010
“In his latest commentary blogger FOFOA (Friend of Friend of Another) concludes that gold lease rates are being falsified to conceal that gold for some time has been in backwardation because supplies available in exchange for fiat currency have dried up. Along the way FOFOA reports that, like GATA's Adrian Douglas, he too last week had trouble getting access to the usual data at the Internet site of the London Bullion Market Association.” (emphasis added)

US Earnings Mixed And Japan IP Shocker / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
There were no real reasons for the US coming off its early highs Thursday (and taking Europe with it) other than technical ones. The 200 day MAV was reached and then the market collapsed. Maybe a little profit taking ahead of Month end today, with S&P +7% on the month? Late headlines about the Attorney General probing the Life Insurance Industry for fraud wasn’t terribly helpful but appears to be confined to military related issues rather than a broad based probe. Techstocks were weak; Symantec Corp. and Nvidia Corp. lost at least 9.9% after reporting forecasts while Akamai Technologies slid 13%t after saying its profit margin shrank.

Robert Prechter's Deflationary Bear Market On the Slope of Hope / Stock-Markets / Deflation
Almost everybody who follows financial markets has heard about climbing the "wall of worry": the time when prices head up bullishly, but no one quite believes in the rally, so there's more worry about a fall than a rise.
What's the opposite condition in the market?

Stock Market Seasonality – The Good and the Bad! / Stock-Markets / Seasonal Trends
Why should you care about what I might say about the market’s seasonality? My research firm, Asset Management Research Corp., has been engaged in extensive research on the market’s seasonality for more than two decades. In 1999 I wrote a book Riding the Bear – How to Prosper in the Coming Bear Market.

Jobless Economic Recoveries and Stock Market Performance / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
We are all familiar with the common expression, markets do not like surprises. As it relates to the current state of the labor markets, the number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment insurance came in at 457,000 last week, which has again brought out comments from the media like “a figure that signals the labor market will be slow to improve even as the economy grows”. Is slow employment growth a surprise to anyone? Expectations from almost all quarters call for slow improvement in the labor markets and persistently high unemployment. In fact, John C. Williams of the San Francisco Fed said yesterday:

What Makes a Frustrating Stock Market? / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
The S&P 500 is turning out to be a conundrum for many professionals and home traders alike. The conflicting information on good earnings, high unemployment, and other factors continue to batter the market. One moment the SP500 is heading for the stars and the next, it's heading to the cellar.

Is the Stock Market Topping Again? / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
Here at TMTF, I enjoy making controversial calls based on Human Behavioral topping and bottoming patterns, often referred to as Elliott Wave Theory. This is a difficult pattern recognition model to follow as there can be numerous interpretations. Instead, I look for additional clues like sentiment indicators, a few traditional technical indicators, headlines in the news and covers of papers etc.

An Corporate Earnings Feast to Digest / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
Risk assets spent the US trading day on the defensive Wednesday , despite constructive earnings releases, with US equities falling 0.6% and European indices declining up to 0.9%. The Fed’s Beige Book, which noted that “economic activity had continued to increase on balance,” but that manufacturing “slowed or levelled off,” set the tone for the afternoon session, with much of the drop in US equities and bond yields occurring around the time of its 2PM EDT release. The main US economic data release for the day, June durable goods orders, printed below expectations on the headline but with very solid readings on core capital goods orders and shipments.

History Gives a Reason to Be Hopeful about U.S. Stocks / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
Jon D. Markman writes: Volatility has hamstrung U.S. stocks recently, but history suggests there's a reason for hope on the horizon.
The past week and a half has been a welcome reprieve from the extreme volatility we've seen over the past few months. There have been no fewer than 19 days this year in which up or down volume has accounted for more than 90% of total volume.

How to Pick Stocks in the ‘New Normal’ Economy / Stock-Markets / Investing 2010
Shah Gilani writes: In today's potentially ultra-slow-growth "New Normal" economy, old stock market multiples do not apply.
In fact, investors who rely on long-held rules about Price/Earnings (P/E) ratios when they buy and sell stocks are risking a pretty big "haircut:" They may be overvaluing some of their stocks - and the stock market in general - by 17% to 20%.

Financials, Oil and Gold on the Move / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2010
Most traders I have been talking with are feeling the same thing. Something big is brewing for the equities market but most do not want to get heavily involved until there is a clear direction. The broad market has been consolidating for almost 3 months and it’s important to remember that the larger the consolidation the bigger the move.

Stock Market Distinct Four-Wave Decline / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
The stock market indices suffered a down day today, and although they started with a brief flurry to the upside, that was about it. They sold off quickly in the morning, tested support and bounced and then consolidated, with the S&P 500 acting a bit better than the Nasdaq 100. But with Apple (AAPL) under pressure today, Nasdaq led the way down as they resumed their sell-off in the afternoon when they broke through the neckline support around the 1800 area on the NDX and 1108 on the SPX.

Stock Market 60's Unwinding...Economy Stinks.... / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
There's a little twist for a title. No matter what these CEO's tell you, the economy has hit the wall. The FOMC Minutes came out today, and they didn't paint a pretty picture at all. It showed how things are slowing down, and that there really isn't too much economic activity, or life, going on out there these past few months. It's scary because this earnings quarter brought about a lot of company's saying things were so good that we're raising guidance. Ouch!! Raising guidance just as things are hitting a stone wall doesn't seem like the best of timing.

Banks Find A Bid After Basel Watered Down / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2010
Another solid session for US markets as they closed up circa 1% buoyed by June new home sales which surged 23.6% mom, more than fully offsetting downward revisions for May to hit 330k, beating the Street consensus forecast by 20k and marking one of the few constructive US releases in the last month. The housing numbers dominated the news, easily eclipsing a weak Dallas Fed manufacturing index.
