Turkey NATO Member Shoots Down Russian Fighter Jet Over Syria; Putin Vows Revenge / Politics / Syria

This is the kind of thing that happens when you put ten different armies, taking orders from at least ten different commanders, in the same theater.
Last night a Russian fighter was flying in and out of Turkish airspace and Turkey shot it down. Then local rebels (Syrian Turks) shot the pilots as they parachuted to the ground.

“The coins’ excellent condition indicated that the owner systematically stashed them away shortly after they were made, the archaeologists said. For some reason that person had buried them shortly after 294 and never retrieved them. Some of the coins, made mainly of bronze but with a 5% silver content were buried in small leather pouches. The archaeologists said it was impossible to determine the original value of the money due to rampant inflation at the time, but said they would have been worth at least a year or two of wages.” – The Guardian/11-19-2015

In the other hand we are stuck with a debt sandwich. That sandwich is a massive slab of debt wedged between an impressive military war machine that spends money like water flowing over Niagara, and a huge welfare system that spends money even more rapidly. Included in the welfare system are Social Security pensions, Disability Income, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), many more programs, and the salaries, bureaucracy and pensions to support them.

BEA Revises 3rd Quarter 2015 US GDP Economic Growth Upward to 2.07% / Economics / US Economy

In their second estimate of the US GDP for the third quarter of 2015, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reported that the economy was growing at a +2.07% annualized rate, up +0.58% from their previous estimate -- but still down nearly 2% (-1.85%) from the second quarter.

SPX has clearly broken through its Short-term support at 2078.86 and is headed for the 200-day Moving Average at 2065.06.
ZeroHedge reports that the the third monthly decline as wages crash the most in 4 years. Consumer Confidence is now at 14-month lows, as well. In the meantime, the Pentagon shrugs over the Russian warplane shoot-down.

ZeroHedge reports further, “Moments ago a big black geopolitical swan landed when newswires lit up with headlines that a Turkish F-16 shot down what was initially said to be an unidentified warplane near the Syrian border after it violated Turkey's airspace on Tuesday, a Turkish military official said, but the nationality of the downed aircraft was not immediately clear.”

The Hybrid Lindsay forecasts occasionally shared with readers in this space are a combination of the work done by the great twentieth-century technician, George Lindsay, and my own, more traditional, cycle work. In last week's commentary I questioned whether the previous Friday's low fulfilled the Hybrid forecast for a low or if it would wait until that day (Monday). We know now that it was the previous Friday. Even without the benefit of the Lindsay work we knew from other metrics that the market was oversold and primed to bounce. Now we use the Hybrid Lindsay model to forecast the next high in the Dow Jones Industrials index. It begins with Lindsay's Middle Section approach.

Will the Fed raise its discount rate at its previously unscheduled meeting for today? Thursday's post on the Federal Reserve's website that "an expedited, unscheduled meeting of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve to review the discount rate" will be held today (Monday) at 11:30 ET (16:30 London/GMT). The discount rate, the rate at which banks borrow from the Fed's discount window is set by the Board of Governors, rarely used by the banks. This must not be confused with the fed funds rates, which is set by the Federal Open Markets Committee.
