The Case for a Short-Term Stock Market Rally, And How to Play It / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
David Zeiler writes: The short-term market rally we've seen over the past week represents fresh opportunities to profit, but be forewarned - it won't last.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday rallied 272 points, or 2.5%, and followed with another 148-point, or 1.34%, gain on Tuesday. That's after last week's 738-point, or 6.4%, tumble. TheStandard & Poor's 500 Indexis up 3.4% this week after last week's 6.5% fall.

Stock Market Flag...Flag....Flag / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
Nearly eight weeks old. Not unusual, but definitely boring. The whipsaw driving everyone nuts. There are no rules for length of time. The flag could finally break with a loss of 1101 and reverse just when you think it's over with for the bulls. It could rise up out of the top of the most recent highs only to head fake again and fail, leaving the bulls disappointed. It could also just trade in this flag for a lot longer than it already has. Did that make your day!! The exponential moving averages are stopping the market cold on all rallies for now. Classic bear market action, which is what we're in until we can blow through 1260 on the S&P 500. It's not going to be happening any time soon, I'm afraid, if you're a bull. Sentiment has been holding the market up from breaking down, but that doesn't mean enough bad news can't hit and take us below, even if it's just temporarily. If we get enough bad news on bank defaults, or a default from Europe, we certainly could have another leg lower, even with sentiment such as it is.

Did the Past 7Weeks Stocks Rally Lull You to Sleep? Bear Markets Are Cunning Beasts / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
Bear markets are cunning beasts.
Don't get me wrong -- we are not in the bear market territory yet. At least, not officially.
An "official" bear market begins when the stocks indexes decline 20%. The DJIA's decline from the May 2, 2011 high to the September 21 low is about 17%. Close, but no cigar.

Most Likely A Prudent Time To Cover S&P 500 Shorts / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
There is a sound axiom in the markets – “When the market does not do what you expect it to do, it is time to pay attention.” In terms of timing an entry point, our rationale for adding to our S&P 500 short positions (SH, RYURX) was based primarily on last Thursday’s breakout from a bullish flag pattern (see below). Yesterday’s sharp rally from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. after the CNBC announcement pushed SH back into the flag below, meaning the breakout was in jeopardy of failing. This morning’s futures indicate we will get confirmation of the failed breakout at the open. Consequently, we will most likely exit our SH position within the first hour of trading today.

Stock Market Intermediate Support Breached / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
SPX: Very Long-term trend - The very-long-term cycles are down and, if they make their lows when expected, there will be another steep and prolonged decline into 2014 after this bull market has run its course.
SPX: Intermediate trend - Back to square one, with a good possibility that the 3-yr cycle will bring a new low. It already has for some other indices.

Stocks Are Not Supposed to Fall in the 3rd Year of a Presidential Term / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
While I dont take much stock in things such as Super Bowl indicators or hem line indicators in terms of giving us a tell on where the economy or market is heading, one quite prescient indicator has been a simple one - the third year of a presidential term indicator. Generally, as a president heads to a re-election year he tries to push through some beneficial packages to help stoke the economy - which often leads to artificial bumps in GDP and profits - hence stocks follow. But in this case, we've been on massive stimulants for years in a row.

Choppy Stock Market May Bottom Soon / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
After some big gains last week and a SPX 1216 close, the market gave it all back this week with a SPX 1136 close. Economic reports were light, but still mostly to the downside. On the positive were building permits, existing home sales, the monetary base and a downtick in weekly jobless claims. On the negative were declining housing starts, FHFA/NAHB housing prices, leading indicators, excess reserves and the WLEI. The big news for the week was the ‘sterilized’ Operation Twist. A $400 bln program to purchase long term debt with short term debt. The market apparently wanted more liquidity in the form of outright purchases. For the week the SPX/DOW were -6.45%, and the NDX/NAZ were -4.85%. Asian markets lost 5.0%, Europeans markets lost 5.2%, the Commodity equity group lost 10.3%, and the DJ World index dropped 7.7%. Next week will be highlighted by Q2 GDP, the Chicago PMI and Case-Shiller.

Stock Market Rough Week...... / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
And that's putting it mildly if you ask me. The market spent little time printing up ticks, and lots of time moving lower. It was a near crash on Thursday with the Nasdaq down nearly 90 points, and the Dow down nearly 400 points. Intraday it was down 525. Lots of bad news from overseas, especially from Greece, along with bad economic reports right here in the United States, really sparked the selling. It appears more and more as if we're headed for a global recession if we're not there already. Many of the reports coming in suggest were likely there right now with the markets action saying that is the case.

What If You Don’t Have A Five Year Investment Horizon! / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
I am so tired of hearing money managers and Wall Street spokesmen promoting stocks, talking on and on about the wonderful prospects of this or that corporation or sector, enticing easily led investors to buy them, hardly ever revealing they don’t mean investors should necessarily buy them immediately. That qualification, “if one has a five-year investment horizon”, is usually revealed in an unobtrusive phrase somewhere near the end of the interview, if at all.

Stock Market Reversal Day.... / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
The market really waited for this day to come. The day fed Bernanke would announce just how much stimulus he is going to flood out banks. Would it be another QE program? Would he buy back treasuries? Would he do nothing at all? The answer became clear today when he announced the buying of long-term treasuries. He also told the world he would keep interest rates near zero on the short-term through mid-2013 at the earliest. Does he see ugly times ahead? Bottom line is at 2:15 PM Eastern Time he told the world of the buyback of those treasuries, and the market hated it. It wanted much more than that. It wanted a full QE program, but didn't get it.

Stock Market Next Selling Wave is About to Begin / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
As many of you already know I expected the dollar index to put in a major three year cycle low sometime this year. The normal timing band would have been for a bottom in the spring. The recent breakout and move to new highs has confirmed that the May bottom did in fact mark the three year cycle low. As expected that also marked the top of the cyclical bull market in stocks.

The S&P 500 and the U.S. Dollar Ahead of the Fed Statement / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
The Federal Reserve is holding a two-day meeting Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Market participants are expecting the Federal Reserve to prop up financial markets yet again with some grand new plan. The fact is the Federal Reserve is running out of bullets.Interest rates cannot move much lower in terms of the Federal Funds rate, additional quantitative easing seems redundant since Treasury yields are close to all-time lows, and finally a twisting of maturities will do little to alter the current economic conditions. The Federal Reserve is just repeating practices which have proven over a long term do little to create jobs or get the economy moving in the right direction. A stock market rally does not help a person looking for a job!

Stock Market Some Selling...Sentiment Continues To Help The Bulls.... / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
You could see that reality take place today in the stock market. There was every reason for the market to get crushed today. There was terrible news overnight from Europe regarding Greece, and some bad news right here at home as Moody's was downgrading our individual states. Not looking good financially for our country. It's a nice toxic mix for the bears to nail the bulls. The futures were getting slaughtered overnight. All of Europe was under severe pressure to the down side. Our futures are reflecting the carnage overseas. Our markets never recovered. It's understandable. We were down nearly 250 on the Dow in the first hour of action. From there the market slowly started to recover off the lows. The Dow finishing down only 108 points with the Nasdaq down only 9 points thanks in most part to Apple Inc. (AAPL), which reached up over $11 today.

The ShamWow Stock Market / Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2011
Let us record history as it happens. Let us not let the truth become altered by the hands of time so that it fits a message of those who seek to rule us. Let us make permanent a recording of the week that passed in real time so that generations of the future will be able to look back to the moments that changed the rules that govern their life.
