The Probability That the Gold & Silver Miners Bear Market is Over is Now High / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Rory_Gillen

It’s been a tough bear market for the gold and silver miners. The Philadelphia Gold & Silver Miners Index (XAU) reached a weekly high in April 2011 (225.79) and declined some 64% peak to trough by December 2013 (weekly low 80.43). After an 11-year bull market in the gold price from 2001 to 2013, which took it from $255 a troy ounce to a peak of $1,900 an ounce and back to $1,300 currently, the gold miners are not just back to 2001 levels, but also the mid-1980s levels. In other words, the gold and silver miners have not added value for investors over the long-term, and even a quadrupling in the gold price in the 2000s did not see them deliver higher and sustainable earnings, cash flows and dividends for investors.

Gold Bugs Don’t Fear Strength, Plenty More Upside Ahead for Gold Stocks / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Jordan_Roy_Byrne

Major bottoms in any market or sector usually produce big rebounds and big gains for those who are correctly positioned. For some, the initial strong gains create trepidation that the market will experience a big correction or revert back to the previous bear market (which created the foundation for the big rebound). I've noticed this trepidation over the past few days from subscribers and other advisors preaching caution or hedging their recent gains. This is all well and fine but the evidence as well as history suggest not to worry because the gains will continue unabated over the intermediate term.

Taking Stock Of Gold Stocks – ANV, NGD, AUY, FCX, NEM, AEX, GDX / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Michael_Noonan

[Note: This started as a comparative look at some gold stocks, and it turned into a great exercise in finding trades, if you take the time and go through the steps we outline in each chart. You can begin to see differences in the quality of trade selection, based purely on information the market offers each and every day. Enjoy!]

We often see comments to the effect of interest in gold miner stocks as a play on gold. Ten days ago, we did an analysis of silver-related stocks, Taking Stock of Silver Stocks, looking at SLW, PAAS, CDE, AG, SSRI, and HL. While many view mining companies as a proxy for gold, they are not necessarily so. There are many influences that can affect the performance of a mining stock that are unrelated to the performance of the underlying physical: management, cost of mining, depletion, labor issues, added debt, etc.

Gold Stocks Breakout / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Zeal_LLC

Gold stocks just surged to a major technical breakout, a very bullish omen.  Investors are actually starting to redeploy capital in this battered sector, catapulting gold stocks into the early lead as 2014’s best performers!  This year is shaping up to be the polar opposite of last year’s epic carnage, with gold stocks mean reverting back up to fundamentally-reasonable levels.  The vast majority of the buying is still yet to come.

Exiting last year, gold stocks were inarguably the most hated sector in all the stock markets.  And it is easy to understand why.  In a stupendous year when the benchmark S&P 500 stock index blasted 29.6% higher, the flagship HUI gold-stock index collapsed 55.5% lower!  It is hard to imagine a greater performance gap, which led investors to flee as gold stocks were crushed with gold.  It was a total disaster.

How Much Can Gold GDX & GDXJ Stocks Gain in 2014? / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Jordan_Roy_Byrne

In recent months we compared the bear market in gold stocks to bear markets of the past. Readers were probably getting sick of seeing our bear analogs chart which made the case that a major bottom was coming. The good news is the major bottom is in and now we can compare the current recovery with past recoveries. GDX and GDXJ continue to form a very bullish bottoming pattern and we want to see how their measured targets (and potential upside) mesh with historical recoveries.

Why I Recently Turned Bullish on Gold Mining Stocks / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: DailyGainsLetter

Sasha Cekerevac writes: A friend of mine asked me the other day about the best way to build a long-term investment strategy. This is a great question, but it’s also one of the most difficult ones to answer.

Obviously, different people have various goals and objectives, especially when it comes to risks. For me, the way I put together an investment strategy is by looking to buy things when they are on sale, including stocks.

Gold Stocks Picking Tools / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: The_Gold_Report

According to Bob Moriarty, the force behind 321gold, the "fact that everyone hated gold in December is a good reason for rational people to love it now." While he recommends physical gold as an essential insurance policy in any portfolio, tax selloffs, low equity prices and low gold prices mean many companies, now selling for "peanuts," are the place to put investment dollars. And, as he tells The Gold Report, all you need to pick a winner is a blindfold and a dart.

The Gold Report: Bob, in the last few weeks, Argentina and Venezuela have devalued their currencies and the central banks in Turkey and South Africa hiked interest rates. The U.S. Federal Reserve cut its monthly bond buying by another $10 billion ($10B). What do you make of all this happening in such a short timeframe?

Gold and Silver Stocks Moving Average Analysis / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Jordan_Roy_Byrne

The gold and silver stocks have rebounded nicely but have consolidated in recent weeks. Where is this going and how do we know? Well, a few weeks ago we publicly said that a major bottom is in. Thus, we believe the trend will go higher. Beyond belief, we need real confirmation that the sector will continue higher. Enter moving average analysis. By using a few simple moving averages we can better understand the current context and get confirmation that the sector will continue to move higher. GDX, GDXJ and SIL could soon test moving averages which have been resistance for the past 13 months.

Gold Corp Huge Gains Are at the End of "Acquisition Trail" / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Money_Morning

Peter Krauth writes: A few weeks back, Goldcorp Inc. (NYSE: GG), a top gold producer, made a hostile $2.6 billion offer for Osisko Mining Corp (TSE: OSK).

It was one of many signs that top gold producers are on the acquisition trail.

And another strong signal that gold prices may be heading upward.

Taking Stock Of Silver Stocks – SLW, PAAS, CDE, AG, SSRI, HL / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Michael_Noonan

We are of the simple opinion that any substitute for the real thing is never as good a choice as the original, even when it comes to Precious Metals. There are so many other considerations that enter the picture when regarding mining stocks. One of the primary ones is management, what it can do to a stock’s performance separate and apart from its underlying purpose, silver production. There can be poor management, mismanagement, decision-making related to stock performance instead of getting the maximum performance out of its mining operations, overspending, misspending…you get the idea.

Gold GLD ETF and the Intermediate Trend Trader / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Rambus_Chartology

Before we get into the charts I have seen several questions on what type of trader is Rambus. There are basically three types of traders. The short term, the long term and the intermediate term. I’m an intermediate trader that looks for the impulse move when a consolidation, top or bottom is confirmed. It’s those moves where you can make the most money in the shortest period of time.

The markets are either building out at top, bottom or consolidation pattern at any given time. This is where it’s much harder to make profitable trades because they are in chopping mode with no real trend, just short term moves going nowhere. It’s when these tops, bottoms or consolidation patterns are completed is when you get your impulse move and a trend to follow. Being in an impulse move is much easier psychologically because the chopping action has finally ended. On the other hand, during an impulse move, you will run into small consolidation patterns that form along the way that many think is the end of the move but in most cases it’s just a pause that refreshes.

Gold Stocks Ditch the Risk and Embrace the Upside / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: The_Gold_Report

Adrian Day likes to think long term, and historical trends persuade him that the bull market in gold should continue for years to come. In this interview with The Gold Report, the founder of Adrian Day Asset Management explains why he expects a significant gold price recovery in the near future. In the short term, he counsels investors to choose companies that minimize risk through royalty agreements, joint ventures and robust balance sheets. In other words, companies with the means to seize profit-making opportunities, and Day shares the names of a handful that fit the bill.

Turning Point in Junior Gold Mining Stocks? / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Doug_Horning

It's not exactly news that gold mining stocks have been in a slump for more than two years. Many investors who owned them have thrown in the towel by now, or are holding simply because a paper loss isn't a realized loss until you sell.

For contrarian speculators like Doug Casey and Rick Rule, though, it's the best of all scenarios. "Buy when blood is in the streets," investor Nathan Rothschild allegedly said. And buy they do, with both hands—because, they assert, there are definitive signs that things may be turning around.

Silver Junior Stocks Struggles / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Zeal_LLC

It’s been an incredibly tough last couple years for the miners.  Not only have they had to endure sharply falling metals prices, they’ve had to battle continually rising operating costs.  For the producer companies this combination has been a margin killer.  And for the non-producers it’s been flat-out devastating.

Mining companies that are non-producers obviously don’t generate any revenue.  They are junior-level companies in various stages of exploration and/or development.  And they primarily rely on investor capital to fund their operations.  In some cases they are able to procure bank loans, but this is the exception.

Gold Crybabies Are Born to Lose / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: The_Gold_Report

Geologist, engineer, Midas-touch investor and financial newsletter publisher Lawrence Roulston has little patience for investors without the nerves to hold onto a good thing during tough times. Gold has been the main embodiment of value for thousands of years, Roulston points out, so why should tomorrow be different? In this interview with The Gold Report, Roulston has some tips on how to double down on gold investments and wipe away the tears.

The Gold Report: Let us be brutally frank, Lawrence. Is investing in gold dead as a reasonable investment strategy?

Gold Stocks Are About to Create a Whole New Class of Millionaires” / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Jeff_Clark

Bear markets always end. Has this one?

Evidence is mounting that the bottom for gold may be in. While there's still risk, there's a new air of bullishness in the industry, something we haven't seen in over two years.

An ever-growing number of industry insiders and investment analysts believe the downturn has come to a close. If that's true, it has immediate and critical implications for investors.

Gold Junior Miners... The Importance of Being Too Early / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Rambus_Chartology

There is a lot we could discuss in this Weekend Report from the price action in the US stock markets to the world stock markets. As we are almost fully invested in the precious metals complex, and especially the juniors at this time, I think we need to put aside all the outside noise and focus on our PM investments.

I know many of our subscribers follow other market other than the precious metals sector which is good. There are thousands of investment opportunities out there that can be a daunting task trying to figure out where to invest ones hard earned capital. I'm agnostic when it comes to making money in the markets. I don't care which area to invest in as long as there is some volatility either going up or down. The 1990's was a good time to invest in the tech stocks for example.

Gold Price Bottoming, Gold Stocks Set to Soar / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Zeal_LLC

Gold is bottoming, showing incredible resilience over the past 7 months.  After suffering an epic plunge in last year’s second quarter, gold has held its ground ever since.  This is despite still facing the same howling headwinds that forced that extraordinary selloff.  Gold has found strong support and carved a massive double bottom.  Thus 2013’s gold super-storm has passed, and a mighty new upleg is dawning.

Obviously last year was exceedingly miserable for gold.  This metal plunged 27.9%, its worst calendar-year performance in 32 years!  When something hasn’t been witnessed for a third of a century, there is no doubt it is rare and extreme.  But the whole year masks the real story, the second quarter.  The gold price plummeted an astounding 22.8% in 2013’s Q2.  That was its worst calendar quarter in 93 years!

Why Gold Stocks are Leading Gold Bullion Price / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Jordan_Roy_Byrne

At the start of the year we asserted that the mining equities could lead the metals higher. Since then, the shares have roared higher while the metals have remained subdued. Gold has gained a bit but Silver has really struggled. Why are the stocks performing so well if the metals are not confirming?

The main reason is the stocks led the metals down (specifically Gold) during the bear market. The chart below plots CDNX (Canadian juniors), GDXJ (US juniors), GDX (large caps) and Gold. Note that both junior markets peaked months before Gold. GDX technically peaked at the same time but began its topping process in December 2010, well before Gold peaked.

Two Gold Stocks You’ll Wish You Owned in 2013… and Should Still Buy Now / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2014

By: Casey_Research

By Laurynas Vegys, Research Analyst

Looking back on 2013, we have to conclude that it was one of the worst years for precious metals stocks in recent memory—despite all the reasons why it should have been a great one.

Here's a sober look at the performance of the most widely followed indices in the precious metals (PM) sector.
