America the Betrayed / Politics / US Politics
If you want to get an idea of what America once was like, read the poems of Walt Whitman. Whitman was born in Long Island in 1819 and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. His family was poor, but even though he left school at the age of 11 he gave himself an education by reading and working in the printing shop of a newspaper until he gradually became a published writer. He worked as a teacher and news reporter and owned his own newspaper by the age of 20.

American Healthcare Fascialism / Politics / US Politics
Some time ago I invented the phrase "fascialism" to describe the American system of political economy. Fascialism means an economy is part fascist, part socialist. Economic fascism has nothing to do with dictatorship, militarism, or bizarre racial theories. Fascism is a brand of socialism that was the economic system of Germany and Italy in the early 20th century. It was characterized by private enterprise, but private enterprise that was comprehensively regulated and regimented by the state, ostensibly "in the public interest" (as arbitrarily defined by the state).

How Did America Fall So Fast? / Politics / US Politics
In 2000, America was described as the sole remaining superpower - or even the world's "hyperpower". Now we're in real trouble (at the very least, you have to admit that we're losing power and wealth in comparison with China).

Washington to Start Taxing Securities Transactions? / Politics / US Politics
Our budget deficit is skyrocketing, and it is only going to get bigger.
The Obama administration is ready to unleash another zillion-dollar stimulus plan. Oh, they won’t call it a stimulus plan, but make no mistake … a whole lot of taxpayer money is going to get spent (and borrowed).

How To Create A Fairer Tax Environment / Politics / US Politics
Can lawmakers who don't have the courage or intelligence to outlaw texting while driving really be expected to create a saner tax structure? Hmmm.
Developing a fairer tax environment is much less an economics problem than it is a political dilemma and, as many of you observed, it is unlikely that anything "tax" will be improved upon until there is some serious facial (and cultural) change in Washington.

Barack Obama becomes U.S. Mikhail Gorbachev / Politics / US Politics
History may repeat itself two or three times or even reach the point, which Francis Fukuyama described as the end of history. The US historian of Japanese origin introduced the notion during the time when there were two dominating superpowers in the world – the United States and the Soviet Union.

Barney Frank, the Banksters Inside Man? / Politics / US Politics
Ralph Nader writes: What planet is Congressman Barney Frank on, anyway? It is the planet of the banks and other financial firms that keep his campaign coffers humming, as their chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.
On his extraterrestrial perch, camouflaged by his witty and irreverent observations, he sees the agony of gouged, debt-ridden consumers and homeowners, but his actions do not measure up.

Five Top Reasons for The Health Care Crisis / Politics / US Politics

Destroying the U.S. Economy / Politics / US Politics
Bob Ford writes: When the rewards for legitimate investments are zero and the penalties for bad investments are zero, a life style has been created in a dimension completely removed from that of the ordinary citizen. Wall Street operates in a zero regulation environment. There is no upper limit or lower limit on anything. It is perfectly acceptable to destroy an entire country, not just its economy. Fraud and deception quickly reduce the money of depositors and investors to zero, and place it in the hands of bankers and top level corporate management.

Dear Friends,
Through my weekly commentaries, I have always tried to share my honest insight into the behavior of markets and recommend strategies to help people preserve their wealth. As investors, many readers have benefited from my advice; but as Americans, they are frustrated that they have to look abroad for decent returns because Washington continues making a mess of things at home. Barrack Obama Awarded Nobel Peace Prize for Being First Black President / Politics / US Politics
The Nobel committee awarded the peace prize for - "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".
The normal expectation is for someone to be awarded the prestigious Nobel peace prize AFTER they have contributed in a major way towards making peace, which I just do not see when looking back on Barrack Obama's first 10 months Presidency.

Let’s Take Back Columbus Day / Politics / US Politics
More than a century ago, America celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage of discovery by hosting an enormous world’s fair on the shores of Lake Michigan. This “World’s Columbian Exposition” featured statues of the great explorer, replicas of his three ships, and commemorative stamps and coins. Because Columbus Day was a patriotic holiday--it marked the opening chapter in American history--the newly written Pledge of Allegiance was first recited in schools on October 12, 1892.

Congress Bombs and Bribes / Politics / US Politics
What if tomorrow morning you woke up to headlines that yet another Chinese drone bombing on US soil killed several dozen ranchers in a rural community while they were sleeping? That a drone aircraft had come across the Canadian border in the middle of the night and carried out the latest of many attacks? What if it was claimed that many of the victims harbored anti-Chinese sentiments, but most of the dead were innocent women and children? And what if the Chinese administration, in an effort to improve its public image in the US, had approved an aid package to send funds to help with American roads and schools and promote Chinese values here?
