Big Government Socialist Beast and The Plague of Self-Delusion / Politics / US Politics
"It has been proved, by indisputable evidence, that power is not the grand principle of union among the parts of a very extensive empire; and that when this principle is pushed beyond the degree necessary for rendering justice between man and man, it debases the character of individuals, and renders them less secure in their persons and property…" ~ James Winthrop, Antifederalist No. 11
I doubt there are many who have thought about the transitive verb, secure, used by James Winthrop in the quote above. Noah Webster’s, 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language, says secure is to make certain; to put beyond hazard, then addresses secure in this context: "Liberty and fixed laws secure to every citizen due protection of person and property…"

When the Revolution Comes, Wear Your Dog Tags / Politics / US Politics
Wednesday morning the 25th at 9:45 a.m. meant a visit to Dr. Nick, the ophthalmologist. The office was peopled predominantly by seniors who looked near 80. Two in conversation admitted to being 78 and 79. I felt young. Still, that’s your future and not too far off. Make the most of your remaining time, I thought.
A sign was placed prominently on the desk in front of the receptionist:

Fiat Currency Money Printing Leading to Decentralization and Operational Secession / Politics / US Politics
"To see what is in front of one's nose needs a constant struggle." ~ George Orwell
We are seeing the beginning of a social revolution. This revolution will spread to politics. It is happening under our noses.
A revolution involves five crucial elements: (1) a new view of sovereignty; (2) a new view of authority; (3) a new view of law; (4) a new view of sanctions; (5) a new view of the future. Any revolution that does not involve all five is more of a coup than a revolution: a substitution of new rulers for old, not a change in the system.

Iran Sanctions and Strategy / Politics / US Politics
The Iranian government has rejected, at least for the moment, a proposal from the P-5+1 to ship the majority of its low-enriched uranium abroad for further enrichment. The group is now considering the next step in the roadmap that it laid out last April. The next step was a new round of sanctions, this time meant to be crippling. The only crippling sanction available is to cut off the supply of gasoline, since Iran imports 35 percent of its refined gasoline products. That would theoretically cripple the Iranian economy and compel the Iranians to comply with U.S. demands over the nuclear issue.

The Pending Financial, Economic, Political and Social Collapse Of The United States / Politics / US Politics
Timothy V. Gatto writes: The truth that most people realize but can’t openly talk about is that America has seen better days and that the system of capitalism has long outlived its usefulness. The last part of that sentence, that capitalism has outlived its usefulness, is thoroughly the fault of the capitalists themselves.

Obama’s Flawed Prescription for Health Care / Politics / US Politics
The House of Representatives has already passed its health-care bill and now the Senate is preparing to vote on its own. Should it pass, the largest new entitlement program since the New Deal will be a reconciliation process and a President’s signature away from being enacted. This is Congress and President Obama’s proposed cure for the ills of our health-care system. But are we sure they have properly diagnosed the disease?

Cap-And-Trade "Three-Card Monte" Dead For 2009 / Politics / US Politics
Typically, one of the best thing Congress ever does is nothing. And so it is again with the Cap-And-Trade energy bill. Thankfully, Senate Climate Bill Delay Raises Doubt on Chance for U.S. Law.

Global Warfare, U.S. Military Operations in All Major Regions of the World / Politics / US Politics
"Not only does one country account for the overwhelming plurality of world military expenditures, but that nation also has troops and bases on all six habitable continents (as well as a 54-year military mission in Antarctica, Operation Deep Freeze) and eleven aircraft carrier strike groups and six navy fleets that roam the world's oceans and seas at will. It is also expanding a global interceptor missile system on land, on sea, in the air and into space that will leave it invulnerable to retaliation."

The Problem with Our Health-Care Debate / Politics / US Politics
Everyone seems to have a different take on how to solve America’s health-care problem. But notice that every solution offered involves some elaborate new system of government controls. Different proposals include a “public option,” mandatory insurance for individuals, government-supported health-care exchanges, government-sponsored “efficacy research,” government-supported co-ops, and as many other ways of dictating consumer and producer behavior as can fit in a 1,000-page bill.

China Criticises Obama For Wild Central Planning, Inflation, and Low Investment / Politics / US Politics
It's incredible how the U.S. has wound up over the decades adopting not only Oligarchic Party Communism, but even the Planning language and practices of the Communist Regimes.

Free Market Competition Against the Government / Politics / US Politics
Last Saturday many concerned Americans watched in horror as the House passed the healthcare reform bill. If this bill makes it through the Senate, it would massively overhaul the way healthcare is delivered in this country. Today, obviously, we don't have a perfect system, but this legislation takes all the mistakes we are making with healthcare and makes them worse. Most of what is wrong with healthcare stems from decades of government intervention and the resulting unintended consequences.

Would the U.S. Start a War to Stimulate the Economy? / Politics / US Politics
I've written two essays attempting to disprove "military Keynesianism" - the idea that military spending is the best stimulus. See this and this.
In response, a reader challenged me to prove that anyone would advocate military spending or war as a fiscal stimulus.

Barack Obama is on his way to becoming a one-term president. According to Politico: "President Barack Obama plans to announce in next year’s State of the Union address that he wants to focus extensively on cutting the federal deficit in 2010 – and will downplay other new domestic spending beyond jobs programs, according to top aides involved in the planning.

Morality vs. Material Interests, Myths of Our Time / Politics / US Politics
It is conventional wisdom that it was the draft that ended the Vietnam war. According to this explanation, cowardly college students subject to the draft and their unpatriotic families, forced an end to the war. This is Karl Marx’s explanation. Material interests, not empty morality, are said to have brought the war to an end.

Don't Fool Yourself: America Is Now a Communist Nation / Politics / US Politics
At last year's Alliance Conference, I urged folks to buy stocks – vehemently... It was the most bullish I've been in my entire life. But now I feel the opposite way. When the facts change, I change my mind. I never thought we'd see the government running $2 trillion deficits, taking over health care, owning all the banks...

As Washington continues debating healthcare reform the rest of the country is primarily concerned about jobs and the economy. It is still uncertain what policies will be implemented, but I am certain about one thing: It will only further devastate our economy and our dollar.

Mass shooting at Fort Hood and a bitterly blunt perspective / Politics / US Politics
In his November 7 essay "What Happened to the Stock Market Crash?", Nadeem Walayat invites the envy of most analysts published at his financial site, The Market Oracle, who discover how correct he was when they weren't. To a lay outsider like myself given to overdoses of metaphysics, I induce his methodology to be a variant of Taoism - just follow the path that is before you. It is revealing itself. Don't impose subjective emotions, beliefs, wishes, fears or desires upon it. It always speaks for itself and objectively about itself. Listen. Watch. Discern its message and essence. Then, work with it, not against it. (Not easy!)

Rising Military Expenditure, The Coming U.S. Budget Attack / Politics / US Politics
The United States is moving backwards…fast. State budget cuts are decimating essential health and social services; public education is being destroyed; the social safety net is in tatters. To make matters worse, all of this is occurring when the loss of jobs stands at a twenty-six year high with no end in sight.
