Why You Should Ignore New ETF Filings / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds
The old saying says, “Don’t believe everything you read.” While this is good advice, investors today have a bigger problem: News that is accurate but irrelevant.
I see this all the time as I track the ETF industry. Just about every week — and sometimes several times a week — I receive breathless news like “So-and-so has filed for an ETF to track the price of kangaroo milk in New Guinea!”

Asian Automakers Are in the Driver’s Seat / Companies / Sector Analysis
The funeral list of industries that have dared to compete against low-cost Asian competitors is long and getting longer. Just ask anybody in the textile, furniture, footwear, electronics, steel, clothing, or TV industry.
You’ll be able to add the automobile business to that list in the near future.

Hedge Fund Investing / Companies / Investing 2010
Monty Agarwal writes: Hedge funds and the managers who run them have been getting a lot of publicity lately — and not of the flattering kind.
We have massive Ponzi schemes, equally massive losses and outsized systemic risks that are enough to frighten away even the hardiest of investors.

SPDR KBW Regional Bank Best Performing ETF / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds
Sorry for the catchy headline, but the SPDR KBW Regional Bank ETF (symbol:KRE) has been my best performing ETF since I first highlighted the sector back on November 18, 2009. KRE is up about 16% since then while the S&P500 has remained flat.
I bring KRE up not because I want to pat myself on the back, but because CNBC's Maria Bartiromo made this comment last Thursday as she was going to a commercial break and I paraphrase:

PALM Pullback Complete? / Companies / Company Chart Analysis
Palm (Nasdaq: PALM)’s violation of near-term support this morning at 12.40 triggered minor downside follow-through to 12.35 prior to a sharp rally to 12.93. The lack of downside extension beneath 12.40 followed by the sharp rally indicates to me that the stock has completed a significant near-term pullback off of the 1/19 high at 14.17.

From a technical perspective, I seem to be much more enamored these days with Japanese equities as opposed to US equities, which are highly overbought and over subscribed too.

Do Dividend-paying Stocks Outperform Non-dividend Paying Stocks Over Time? / Companies / Dividends
Many stock analysts will tell you the basic strategy in the market is to buy low and sell high. While I’ve done that successfully for years, it’s not as easy as it sounds. What’s more, it’s a lot more difficult in bear markets and markets bound in trading ranges, which are two distinct possibilities going forward.

INTC/JPM On Deck... / Companies / Corporate Earnings
The market has continued to move higher day after day in a slow grinding manner that is never on the nerves. As we move higher the moves up get smaller and smaller but they're still up moves. the question now becomes, can the market continue this grind higher or will it get stopped cold! The answer is likely in the earnings season that is truly upon us now. Intel (INTC) is huge as it is a major economic indicator as its chips are in everything. The news just came out and they blew away the numbers and it is somewhat higher after hours. Up 2-3% on top of nice gains during the day. It's on breakout if this holds and that can only be good for the markets.

Goldman Sachs The Giant Vampire Squid’s Journey To The East / Companies / Banking Stocks
Usury, once a venal sin, was now commonplace and bankers who live by the charging of interest were considered respectable. The hand of evil was everywhere as the end-times, the end of days, were upon them.
Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi’s description of Goldman Sachs as a Giant Vampire Squid which wraps itself around its victims draining them of their productivity and profits is chillingly accurate.

Watching Critical Support on Google / Companies / Company Chart Analysis
This morning, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), a major component of the Nasdaq 100, hit a corrective low of 573.90 off of its Jan 4 high at 629.51, prior to turning up for a rally into the 583-85 area. What is important technically is that GOOG pivoted to the upside from within 1% of its major up trendline from the March 2009 low, which cuts across the price axis at approximately 570.00. Let’s notice that the recent (yesterday) low at 45.43 came within around 40 cents, or 1%, of its Mar-Jan up trendline as well.

It's Time For Shareholders to Squeeze Greedy Wall Street Bank Bonuses / Companies / Credit Crisis 2010
Martin Hutchinson writes: Wall Street bonuses are back in the news again, as the Obama administration scores cheap political points by bashing bankers.
Wall Street's investment-banking houses correctly claim that they are paying out a much-lower-than-usual percentage of their profits in the form of bonuses - in some cases, less than 50%.

Let The Corporate Earnings Season Begin... / Companies / Corporate Earnings
We've had some good earnings reports prior to this evening but when Alcoa Inc. (AA) reports, that's the official kick off to the earnings season. There have been some great reports and some not so great reports thus far but all in all it has been pretty good. Of course, they're good based on lowered expectations but we have to adjust to how the market sees things, not how our hearts and minds see them.

Determining Oil and Gas Company Valuations / Companies / Oil Companies
How do valuations get set for oil and gas companies? I ask because I’m seeing very fast-rising valuations in the junior and intermediate oil sector that I cover. I have seen junior oil producers valued at $200,000 per flowing barrel recently – more than triple the peer group average.

The Utica, An Emerging Canadian Shale Gas Play / Companies / Natural Gas
Shale gas is natural gas that has been generated and trapped within the natural pores and fractures of shale. This natural gas has been accumulating because of the breakdown of high levels of organic carbon or kerogen within the shale. The right temperature, pressure and a lot of time - over millions of years - is needed to produce gas. Shale plays can hold enormous amounts of gas and once production has been stabilized gas wells from shales tend to have low decline rates and long production lives.
