Turning the United States into a Police State, Face Crime / Politics / US Politics
Doug Hornig, Editor, Casey’s Extraordinary Technology writes: In late September, there was a modest gathering of law enforcement officers, military personnel, and mental health professionals in the small western New York town of Hamburg. It was totally ignored by the mainstream media, with just a reporter from the Buffalo News on hand to record the proceedings. Lucky for us.

Demise of United States is Over Hyped / Politics / US Politics
Right now, the most crowded trade on the planet is the bet against the dollar and the US.In my view, those that believe the dollar will become trash have gotten carried away. When Warren Buffet was a young man, his father was terrified of just this. Granted, you would have been better to invest in stocks for the past 60/70 years but the dollar has not collapsed in the way he feared. On the contrary, it is now more pivotal to the world's economy rather than less and here are a few reasons I believe it will be around for another 70 years at least:

Today's United States of America is a Seventeenth Century Nation Adorned with 21st Century Trinkets / Politics / US Politics
The mythical United States of America so highly lauded exists nowhere. It is a Shangri-la. The Preamble of the Constitution makes perfectly clear what kind of nation the United States was meant to be. What exists today fulfills none of those goals. Some have argued that the nation was a fraud from day one. Whether accurate or not, what is clear is that it most certainly was quickly murdered by John Marshall, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who wrote the decision known as Marbury v. Madison. Since that day, the Court has replicated England's seventeenth century political economy absent only the monarchy. Today's United States of America is a seventeenth century nation adorned with twenty first century trinkets, many deadly. Instead of being as it claims "the leader of the free world," it is a backward authoritarian pre-enlightenment reactionary regime.

George W. Bush's "Decision Points" 497 Page Excuse for War Crimes and Torture / Politics / US Politics
Andrei Fedyashin writes: All political memoirs are, to some extent, an exercise in self-justification, especially those by presidents and prime ministers - an obvious point, but true nonetheless. The original idea behind memoirs was to provide thoughtful reflection on past events and actions. Now they function more like a preemptive strike. Politicians use their memoirs to define their role in history before historians do it for them.

Tea Party Fraud, True Bature of the Latest Political Scam Artists / Politics / US Politics
With the 2010 general elections over, attention shifts – as it always does following each election – to consideration of the next presidential steeplechase. "Who’s it gonna be?, who’s it gonna be?, who’s it gonna be?," is the refrain already begun on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and other directors of the Boobeoisie Chorus. For a politically-centralized society to maintain its pyramidal structure, it is essential that men and women be constantly reminded of their subject status. An ongoing curiosity as to the identity of their future masters keeps their minds from wandering to more important matters.

Time To Act: A Campaign To Jail Wall Street Fraudsters / Politics / US Politics
“I’ll have the Chateau Mouton-Rothschild from 1982,” a Wall Street investment banker recently told his waiter at the latest and greatest shi-shi restaurant in Greenwich Village.
“Yes sir, but I want you to know, the cost is $$3,950,” according to the New York Times.

Welcome To India, Obama Sahib / Politics / US Politics
Eric Margolis writes: Getting out of the Washington goldfish bowl is also good for American presidents, particularly after an electoral shellacking.
It must have been a relief for President Barack Obama to see smiling Indian officials on his visit to Delhi rather than snarling Republicans back home.

Plutocracy Now! / Politics / US Politics
Every so often, Americans should stop everything they're doing for a moment, and reflect upon the nature of their country. Specifically, upon what has traditionally been this country's defining characteristic. Was it our capitalist economy? No, there are many capitalistic countries around the world and capitalism was not first formulated by Americans. What about our emphasis on personal freedom? Well, once again, many countries preach the virtues of freedom and many groups of people have fought for freedom well before America was formed. Surely it has been our diverse populace and our tolerance of all races, genders, sexual preferences... yeah, right. Personally, I would answer that it was our written Constitution and the democratic values embodied within it.

Dollar Breakdown, America Has Lost its Imagination, Its Population Brainwashed to Do the Elites Bidding / Politics / US Politics
“Imagination has brought mankind through the dark ages to its present state of civilization. Imagination led Columbus to discover America. Imagination led Franklin to discover electricity.” -L. Frank Baum
In my opinion America has lost its imagination. The populace has been brainwashed into letting a select group of individuals do all the thinking for them. In the best of all possible worlds it will produce a population that is dull and capable of only doing menial tasks for a menial wage, even if the people in charge have the best of intentions.

America's Economic and Social Crisis, Profits or Prosperity? / Politics / US Politics
Zoltan Zigedy writes: Data on US profits for the second quarter of this year are well worth studying, not only for what they say about the health of the corporate sector, but also for what they reveal about the structure of our economic system and the priorities of our policy makers.

How the Republicans Will Sucker the Tea Party / Politics / US Politics
First, you must understand that Boehner is a GobGop: a Good Old Boy of the Grand Old Party. The GobGops' goal is to keep the present system funded by the Bigs: Big Business, Big Pharma, Big Oil, and Big Banking. If you do not understand this, then you are as naive as a Democrat who thinks Obama speaks for The Common Man.

Democrats Prepare to Move to the Right / Politics / US Politics
On the eve of the Republican-dominated mid-term election, working people were told to vote Democrat to prevent a "truly dangerous" Republican party from taking power. There is an element of truth in this: the Republican Party has been sprinting to the far right for decades, to the point where they are incapable of speaking sensibly about political issues.

The World Looks at Obama After the U.S. Midterm Election / Politics / US Politics
The 2010 U.S. midterm elections were held, and the results were as expected: The Republicans took the House but did not take the Senate. The Democrats have such a small margin in the Senate, however, that they cannot impose cloture, which means the Republicans can block Obama administration initiatives in both houses of Congress. At the same time, the Republicans cannot override presidential vetoes alone, so they cannot legislate, either. The possible legislative outcomes are thus gridlock or significant compromises.

U.S. Midterm Elections Further Demonstrates The Need for Revolution / Politics / US Politics
The Obama referendum came in and he got what he deserved. When you run on change and leave the same criminals in positions of power and don’t hold anyone accountable for obvious crimes, and allow them to continue to commit those crimes, you deserve to lose your power. This is what happens when you put Tim Geithner and Larry Summers in charge of the economy, and support Ben Bernanke for reconfirmation as Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The Impotence of U.S. Elections, Democrats and Republicans One Party with Two Names / Politics / US Politics
In his historical novel, The Leopard, Giuseppe di Lampedusa writes that things have to change in order to remain the same. That is what happened in the US congressional elections on November 2.
Jobs offshoring, which began on a large scale with the collapse of the Soviet Union, has merged the Democrats and Republicans into one party with two names. The Soviet collapse changed attitudes in socialist India and communist China and opened those countries, with their large excess supplies of labor, to Western capital.

American Democracy: Despair Follows Delusion / Politics / US Politics
Despite all the hype and rhetoric, only one impact of the midterm elections is assured. Notwithstanding power shifts from Democrats to Republicans in Congress there will not be any deep, sorely needed true reforms of our corrupt, dysfunctional and inefficient government. The culture of corruption in Washington , DC will remain. Hundreds of millions of dollars from corporate and other special interests will assure that.

U.S. Revolution Coming Against State Handouts / Politics / US Politics
Almost nobody these days likes to call a spade a spade in public. In fact, calling a spade a spade in public is a form of political incorrectness. The Establishment puts negative pressure on all those who identify a spade as a spade, if that identification might cost the government a loss of power.

With the Republicans in Power, What About The U.S. Economy? / Politics / US Politics
The Election is over. The Dems were thumped. They lost the House, even if they still have the Senate by a hair. Barney Frank will be back but not Alan Grayson or Russ Feingold. WSWS offered the key reason: “intractable and deepening economic crisis and the evident inability of the Obama administration to develop any policies to overcome it.”
Is that crisis likely to go away after an emboldened army of the righteous (and well-financed claque of self-styled “economically responsible” free market boosters) won more nominal power?
