Words Can’t Magic Away the Trade Deficit / Politics / US Politics
One recurring delusion in the controversy over America’s free-trade-induced trade mess is the idea that our gigantic trade deficit, which fluctuates around $500 billion a year, somehow “doesn’t matter.”
Anyone who’s been reading my column in the Huffington Post will probably be taken aback by this bizarre assertion, but it’s actually out there, all over the place, especially in the nooks and crannies of libertarian fantasy land, where any “free” market outcome must necessarily be good and any problems observed must therefore be illusions.

Mainstream Media Won't Report on the CIA's Secret Wars / Politics / US Politics
As the CIA expands covert missions, it's no surprise than many of their operations go unreported. Jeremy Scahill of The Nation says, though, that many outlets are aware of some injustice carried out by the CIA and are just failing to report them.

We Don't Need Free Trade Agreements with Panama, Colombia, and Korea / Politics / US Politics
Obama is still pushing for free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia, and Korea, albeit with the thin fig leaf of demanding they be accompanied by money for so-called Trade Adjustment Assistance, a "painkiller" program designed to blunt the harm to laid-off workers.
The Republicans don't like TAA, which has held up passage of these agreements momentarily, but both sides are still gunning to pass these agreements some time soon.

U.S. Debt Ceiling Political Theater Diverting Attention from Theft of Americans Wealth / Politics / US Politics
Dennis Kucinich writes: The rancorous debate over the debt belies a fundamental truth of our economy -- that it is run for the few at the expense of the many, that our entire government has been turned into a machine which takes the wealth of a mass of Americans and accelerates it into the hands of the few. Let me give you some examples.

Competing Currencies - A Defense Against Profligate Government Spending / Politics / US Politics
The end of June marked what is hopefully the end of the Federal Reserve's policy of quantitative easing. For months the Fed has purchased hundreds of billions of dollars of Treasury debt, enabling the government to fund its profligate deficit spending, push the national debt to its limit, and further devalue the dollar. Confidence in the dollar is plummeting, confidence in the euro has been shattered by the European bond crisis, and beleaguered consumers and investors are slowly but surely awakening to the fact that government-issued currencies do not hold their value.

U.S. Committing Imperial Suicide / Politics / US Politics
We always take my car ‘cause it’s never been beat.
And we ain’t missed yet with the girls we meet. ~ The Beach Boys
We are sitting in our favorite café in Paris…listening to the Beach Boys and reflecting on the decline of the US Empire. Back in the ’60s, the Beach Boys celebrated a country that was young, growing, optimistic…and a winner. Now, what we see is the whole kit-and-kaboodle of life in the US giving way to desperation, delusion and an irresistible impulse to commit imperial suicide. The economy turns sour. The military becomes malignant. Households are corrupt, bankrupt and dependent. Even the churches sing their hallelujahs to Caesar now.

The Coming U.S. Federal Collapse / Politics / US Politics
As Gary North has noted, the great 21st century default of the U.S. government has already started, with the raiding of federal pension funds to stay solvent a few months ago. We may recall the 2000 presidential election, when Al Gore spoke favorably about creating a social security "lockbox," even as Social Security "taxes" had been treated for years as a core part of the federal budget, simple annual "income" for the state.

Economy, Markets, Energy Supplies and Geopolitics Feels Like its 1979 / Politics / US Politics
It feels like 1979 all over again: the US, European and Japanese economies are in the doldrums, gold and oil prices are high and rising, friendly Middle East and Arab dictators are falling. In the White House things are also in flashback: the charismatic new Democrat preaching clean energy and climate catastrophe mantras is as unsuccessful as Jimmy Carter at winning the public around. Can Obama succeed where Carter did not?

War on Terror is a $6 Trillion Racket, Exceeding Total Cost of WWII / Politics / US Politics
When Obama launched his re-election propaganda campaign to trick the American public into thinking that he intends to end the Af-Pak War, he said that the “War on Terror” has cost $1 trillion over the past decade. While that is a staggering amount of money, he was being deceitful once again.

America Can Restore Liberty With Three Short Laws / Politics / US Politics
Let us assume that at some point in the future, Congress will pass and the President will sign three bills. These three laws would strip power from the United States government on a scale inconceivable even to the Tea Party's hard core members. They would be very short laws.

Jamie Dimon, Mr. JP Morgan as Treasury Secretary? / Politics / US Politics

How to Save the U.S. Labor Movement / Politics / US Politics
The first step in saving the labor movement is recognizing that it needs saving. Sadly, many union leaders -- including Richard Trumka of the AFL-CIO -- refuse to accept this reality, choosing instead to dismiss the current threats against labor unions as "exaggerated,” or limited to this or that Republican politician. In fact, the labor movement -- especially public sector unions -- is facing nationwide attacks by Democrats and Republicans alike.

Why the U.S. Is Demonizing and Destroying Pakistan / Politics / US Politics
The AfPak War Theatre: Establishing the New Strategy
As Senator Obama became the President-elect Obama, his foreign policy strategy on Afghanistan was already being formed. In 2007, Obama took on veteran geostrategist and Jimmy Carter’s former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski as one of his top foreign policy advisers, and he remained his foreign policy adviser throughout 2008. On Obama’s campaign, he announced that as President, he would scale down the war in Iraq, and focus the “War on Terror” on Afghanistan, promising “to send in about 10,000 more troops and to strike next-door Pakistan, if top terrorists are spotted there.”

Iran, and the First U.S. Dollar War Defeat / Politics / US Politics
A short story showing how powerful elite interests and central bankers could manipulate American foreign policy using a black flag event in order to guarantee the American dollar remains the world’s reserve currency. This is of course just a work of fiction and hypothetical case study and the characters have no relation to actual people, government officials or events.

4th of July Independence Day Propaganda / Politics / US Politics
Anthony Gregory writes: Libertarians often insist Independence Day is really our holiday, which statists have no right to celebrate with a straight face. But perhaps this whole approach is misguided. Maybe the lovers of freedom should be the ones loath to bring out the fireworks.

The American Revolution Was a Mistake, Tricked on the 4th of July / Politics / US Politics
I do not celebrate the fourth of July. This goes back to a term paper I wrote in graduate school. It was on colonial taxation in the British North American colonies in 1775. Not counting local taxation, I discovered that the total burden of British imperial taxation was about 1% of national income. It may have been as high as 2.5% in the southern colonies.

Independence Day for Whom? / Politics / US Politics
BATR Publisher’s Note: The tenth anniversary of this editorial about July 4th Independence Day rings even louder today. SARTRE Commentary maintains a consistent and vocal message that is timeless. When you read the essay - Independence Day for Whom? - You celebrate the uniqueness of the American Revolution. Written before the September 11, 2001 transmutation of the country into a despotic police state, the excuse of a fake homeland security threat is used to destroy the foundation of individual civil liberties. The indisputable fact of the last decade is that America is no longer a nation of free citizens and a Republic government of public servants, accountable to the people. The injustice of the British Crown has only been substituted for the iniquities of the Amerika Empire. Reflect upon this editorial and pass it on.

Death of Bin Laden: What Really Happened, When and Why? / Politics / US Politics
Forest Lane writes: In fact, if it were not for its two specific aspects, this recent Bin Laden’s departing - rather the virtual ‘reality‘, customarily maintained by Washington officials and mainstream media outlets, than actual one - should have been given no importance at all. After all, one can easily argue that given bin Laden was a mythical effigy manufactured by those officials and American propaganda they could do with their own semi-virtual creature whatever they wanted. But these two aspects: why now? and why in such a way? may prove to be something of considerable importance.

The world changes for Strauss-Kahn / Politics / US Politics
Perhaps you judge by how much or how little money a person possesses; judge by their national origin or judge by their position in society. Perhaps you judge their character, morality and values instead. In the example of America's "rush to judgment" of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, perpetuated by a media that seems more yellow and sensationalist than ever before in its history, a lone man was singled out for vilification and public humiliation from a pool of such men accused of doing such things on any such day in any such American city.
