Welcome to the Soviet States of America 2011 / Politics / US Politics

By: Mike_Whitney

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThis must be what it was like in Russia before the Soviet Union collapsed. The government's so crooked that nothing works right, the infrastructure's in a shambles, millions of people are scraping by on government handouts, and everyone's on a permanent downer. Welcome to the Soviet States of America 2011.

Wall Street's Role in Narco Trafficking, The War on Drugs is a Fraud / Politics / US Politics

By: Mike_Whitney

Best Financial Markets Analysis Article

Imagine what your reaction would be if the Mexican government agreed to pay Barack Obama $1.4 billion to deploy US troops and armored vehicles to New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to conduct military operations, set up check points, and engage in fire-fights that end up killing 35,000 US civilians on the streets of American cities.

Ron Paul on Enabling of a Future American Dictator / Politics / US Politics

By: Dr_Ron_Paul

These are truly troubling days for liberty in the United States.

Last week the 60 day deadline for the president to gain congressional approval for our military engagement in Libya under the War Powers Resolution came and went. The media scarcely noticed. The bombings continued. We had a hearing on Capitol Hill on the subject, but the administration refuses to bother with the legality of its new war. It is unclear if Mr. Obama will ever obtain congressional consent, and astonishingly it is being argued that he doesn't need it.

Innovation, the American Economy’s Most Surprising Deficit / Politics / US Politics

By: Ian_Fletcher

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleI argued in a previous article why, despite America’s current obsession with government budget issues, the real key to bringing back our economy lies in a) fixing our trade deficit and b) restoring our capacity for innovation.

Although the former problem has now grabbed significant public attention, most Americans seem to think that our national capacity for innovation is healthy and without problems.

Is Bankrupt Greece America's Future? / Politics / US Politics

By: Michael_S_Rozeff

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleGreece has a sovereign debt problem. The bonds of the Greek government have been downgraded by a major rating service. Their prices have fallen sharply in the market. This means that the risk is high that the government will default on its sovereign debt.

The interest rates that the Greek government must pay in order to borrow have risen sharply. This is worsening the government’s solvency and budget problems.

United States on the Road to Ruin, Your Trigger Points / Politics / US Politics

By: Gary_North

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWhen would a wise Jew have begun making plans to leave Germany? 1933? 1934? 1938? 1939?

In retrospect, most people would say 1933, the year Hitler was appointed (not elected) Chancellor by President von Hindenburg. On 30 January, Hitler became Chancellor. He asked Hindenburg to dissolve the government and schedule new elections for March 5, which Hindenburg did.

Why the Budget is the Wrong Thing to Fight About / Politics / US Politics

By: Ian_Fletcher

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe country is consumed right now with the fight over the Federal budget, specifically the plan of Rep. Ryan (R-WI) to balance it by (mostly) radically cutting spending on medical programs, especially Medicare. The recent Republican loss in New York’s 26th district’s special election—which had more to do with my friend Jack Davis running on a third-party ticket—has been interpreted as a referendum against the Ryan plan. And the states are, of course, tied up in budget battles of their own, most visibly the aggressive push to cut the cost of public employees by curtailing their unions.

Principles of Domination, Complex But Clear U.S. Foreign Policies / Politics / US Politics

By: Jack_D_Douglas

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleI've heard Congress people and others say repeatedly that the U.S. has no real or clear foreign policy for the Middle East. I think the U.S. has a clear but complex and changing, general policy in the Middle East which we can infer from U.S. actions, but Obama et al. keep using short run tactics and proclamations to deceive the various major powers there and the American people.

U.S. Manufacturing Rebound is a Myth / Politics / US Politics

By: Ian_Fletcher

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleTalk of a manufacturing revival is in the air.  America has, in fact, gained a quarter-million industrial jobs (source) since the start of 2010.  Unfortunately, this is less than 15 percent of the number lost during the recession. Furthermore, after this teasing uptick, U.S. manufacturing output seems to be stalling again.  So it worth revisiting a much  denied fact I have written about before here and here: American manufacturing is in a state of profound crisis.

Bin Laden Compound Assault, How Many U.S. Navy Seals Died? / Politics / US Politics

By: Paul_Craig_Roberts

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIn a sensational and explosive TV report, the Pakistani News Agency has provided a live interview with an eye witness to the US attack on the alleged compound of Osama bin Laden. The eye witness, Mohammad Bashir, describes the event as it unfolded. Of the three helicopters, "there was only one that landed the men and came back to pick them up, but as he [the helicopter] was picking them up, it blew away and caught fire." The witness says that there were no survivors, just dead bodies and pieces of bodies everywhere. "We saw the helicopter burning, we saw the dead bodies, then everything was removed and now there is nothing."

The Sexual Underground World of Bankers / Politics / US Politics

By: Danny_Schechter

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMy colleague Mike Whitney asks: “So, what are the chances that Strauss-Kahn will get a fair trial now that he's been blasted as a serial sex offender in about 3,000 articles and in all the televised news reports?

Do you remember any Wall Street bankers being dragged off in handcuffs when they blew up the financial system and bilked people out of trillions of dollars?"

No Nation, No Border, Fight Law and Order / Politics / US Politics

By: Richard_Hartley

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleEveryday on the way into the office I walk past a particular piece of Graffiti. It's been there for a number of years. Whilst most graffiti gets painted out or cleaned off quite promptly this wall remains. I now get the feeling that the building owner must in fact be the graffiti artist or have an empathy with the message it tries to portray. The words though seem in a time-warp with reality. I imagine that perversely this was sprayed on the wall by a visiting unelected 55 year old diplomat from Brussels as one of the European Union’s slogans.

Strauss-Kahn, Eliot Spitzer and 'soft assassinations' / Politics / US Politics

By: Michael_T_Bucci

It appears that IMF chief Mr. Dominique Strauss-Kahn chose the least safe location - New York - to carry-out an alleged "criminal sexual act, attempted rape, and unlawful imprisonment" of a 32-year-old hotel maid, if that allegation is proved in court. He will plead not guilty, said his attorney Benjamin Brafman. In essence, Strauss-Kahn might just have received the "Eliot Spitzer boot" masterminded and directed by the same Wall Street gang that engineered the past meltdown, the ongoing deep recession and the U.S. Government's austerity programs, which international wealth continues to exploit for optimal profits.

IMF Chief Strauss-Kahn Caught in "Honey Trap" / Politics / US Politics

By: Mike_Whitney

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleI have no way of knowing whether the 32-year-old maid who claims she was attacked and forced to perform oral sex on IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, is telling the truth or not. I'll leave that to the braying hounds in the media who have already assumed the role of judge, jury and Lord High Executioner. But I will say, the whole matter smells rather fishy, just like the Eliot Spitzer story smelled fishy. Spitzer, you may recall, was Wall Street's biggest adversary and a likely candidate to head the SEC, a position at which he would have excelled. In fact, there's no doubt in my mind that if Spitzer had been appointed to lead the SEC, most of the top investment bankers on Wall Street would presently be making license plates and rope-soled shoes at the federal penitentiary.

Creating the Bin Laden "Reality" / Politics / US Politics

By: Paul_Craig_Roberts

I have heard one dozen times today (May 13) from media that the US killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan. I heard it three times from National Public Radio, twice from the BBC, and from every TV and radio station I encountered, even those stations that play the rock and roll music of the 1950s and 1960s. The killing of bin Laden has now entered the legends of our time and, no doubt, the history books.

G.O.P.'s Prepares to Declare Permanent War / Politics / US Politics

By: Mike_Whitney

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) is pushing a bill through congress that will repeal due process and give the President nearly-unlimited powers to wage war wherever and whenever he chooses without congressional approval. Because the language in the so-called Detainee Security Act of 2011 is (intentionally?) vague, it's impossible to know at whom it is directed. Is the real focus on suspects captured by the military in the so-called War on Terror or civilians who oppose US foreign policy? It's hard to say. Here's an excerpt from an article in Talking Points Memo that mulls over that same question:

Glaring Anomalies in the Official Narrative On Bin Laden Assassination / Politics / US Politics

By: Global_Research

Felicity Arbuthnot writes: “In politics stupidity is not a handicap”, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821.)

For those who believe in omens, the triumphal announcement of the murder of Osama bin Laden, his son and various of his household (if it were he) by US., special forces, did not bode well.

Gasbag Hillary Clinton Blasts China on Human Rights / Politics / US Politics

By: Mike_Whitney

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIs there anything more irritating than listening to US officials blabber about "human rights"?

I mean, really, doesn't it drive you crazy? Here's Hillary Clinton bashing China for their "deplorable" human rights record, and meanwhile Bradley Manning sits naked and freezing in a 6' by 8' cinderblock cell in some far-flung American gulag waiting to get fingernails yanked out. Can you see the hypocrisy?
