Is October the Month for Technology Stocks? / Companies / Tech Stocks
David Becker writes: Technology stocks generally perform well in October as investors begin to focus on third quarter earnings. While the group as a whole has outperformed the broader markets, there are a number of both software and hardware companies that have experienced stellar performance.
One way to measure the performance of a sector or a specific stock is to analyze its seasonality. Seasonality can be defined as regular changes that occur to a stock or sector every calendar year. For example, if the price of a stock climbs every October then it has a seasonal pattern.

Tech’s Fastest Growing Sector Could Make You Rich / Companies / Tech Stocks
Short sellers have their knives out for GoPro Inc.
And that’s the least of the wearable sports camera maker’s problems right now.
GoPro’s share priceseems to be flopping around wildly on news: surging 11% after a new product announcement, then sinking the same after the company’s founders found a loophole that allows them to sell some of their stock early.
The stock has spiked again since then – but I don’t expect that to last.

The One Tech Stock Investment You Should Never Sell / Companies / Tech Stocks
Michael A. Robinson writes: Earlier this week, the producers at CNBC asked me to appear on one of their programs to explain why tech is once again leading the market to record highs.
That’s kind of ironic.
When I appeared on the popular financial channel in early June, I was peppered with tough questions about why tech stocks were lagging the market.

Inside the Stunning Deal That Put Apple and IBM on the Same Side / Companies / Tech Stocks
Michael A. Robinson writes: Business rivalries come and go. But not many end up the focus of an iconic TV commercial that aired once during Super Bowl XVII – and never again.
You probably remember the famous “1984″ commercial introducing Macintosh personal computers. In the ad, “Apple” is an iconoclastic young heroine who hurls a hammer at a giant screen broadcasting “Big Brother” (IBM) lecturing to a legion of followers.

Michael A. Robinson writes: Instead of a suit and tie or my Silicon Valley uniform of button-down shirt and zippered v-neck sweater, today I’m donning black and white stripes. That’s because I’m refereeing a boxing match between two of the biggest tech legends around.

AMD’s Transformation into an Entrepreneurial Growth Company / Companies / Tech Stocks
Vincent El Hayek writes: “AMD Shares Crushed on Weak Q3 Outlook; Analysts Fret about Inventory, Intel.” The headline, one of many articles that ran in 2012, spoke to the dismal future of the personal computer market. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was founded in 1969, and was the largest supplier of CPUs for PCs. In 2006, AMD shares were as high as $41 and AMD was in the process of completing talks to acquire ATI Technologies (one of the largest semiconductor companies in America) for $5.4 billion. By 2012, AMD shares had fallen so low that they were trading below the $2 mark. At that point, the common belief was that they would soon be acquired or forced into bankruptcy. AMD had gone from being an industry leader, to a shell of its former self, with little market share. Ultimately, AMD was faced with a choice, they had to completely reinvent themselves, or they were going to fail.

Five High-Yield Dividend Stocks That Will Make You Love the Tech Sector / Companies / Tech Stocks
Tara Clarke writes: Investors looking for high-yield dividend stocks have previously eschewed the tech sector, as that's traditionally been a place to invest for growth.
Instead of paying out extra cash to investors, tech high-fliers typically reinvest cash in research and development, mergers and acquisitions, and other classic "growth" strategies. That's why their earnings - and share prices - grow faster than average.

Time to Turn High-Tech "Rust" into Gold / Companies / Tech Stocks
Michael A. Robinson writes: As a tech analyst I spent my early years in Detroit, and I know a lot about the Rust Belt.
In fact, when I moved to the West Coast in the mid-1980s, I drove a Honda that had already started rusting. Every once in a while, some wag would come up and ask if I was from the Midwest.
No doubt, rust like that was obvious. But in my more than three decades of working with Silicon Valley companies, I've found high-tech "rust" may be a lot less obvious and much more insidious.

How to Cash In Big on Russia’s Tech Stocks Market / Companies / Tech Stocks
William Patalon writes: There's an old French proverb that says: Achetez aux canons, vendez aux clarions. That's "buy on the cannons, sell on the trumpets."
As a dyed-in-the-wool Contrarian investor, I'm a firm believer in the precept. In fact, back in the late 1990s, when New York money manager Anthony M. Gallea and I penned our book Contrarian Investing: Buy and Sell When Others Won't and Make Money Doing It, one of the opening lines was "Gloom makes us glad."
