By: Dumitru_Midon

Electricity is not really something any of us can do without. Whether you have a tariff or a prepaid meter the money soon seems to go, and the media is continually reminding us that prices are going up. Consumers are feeling badly let down by Ofgem, the industry regulators who put a cap in place to ensure that variable tariffs could only rise to a certain point, and then moved the cap higher leaving people feeling frustrated and angry.

SelfTrade.co.uk Hits Shares ISA Investors with Quarterly Custody Fees / Personal_Finance / Investing 2019

By: N_Walayat

It's just got that bit harder for small stock investing customers of Selftrade.co.uk to make money investing.

Customers of Selftrade.co.uk who don't trade at least twice in a quarter (since April 2018) are being hit with a quarterly balance eroding custody fee of at least £17.99. Which might not sound like much but for small retail investors who tend to be invested in ISA's for the long-run its going to amount to a sizeable drain on their ISA accounts of at least £72 per year. And the charges would be even higher for those who hold SIPPS with Selftrade.co.uk

The Specialist Lending Renaissance / Personal_Finance / Debt & Loans

By: Submissions

Anyone who’s been in business for more than a decade will undoubtedly remember the 2007/2008 financial crisis. Not to mention, the market crash that followed, which to a large extent dismantled the entire subprime lending market of Great Britain. Despite having previously occupied approximately 10% of the total sector, it was no longer deemed appropriate or advisable to hand out subprime mortgages or loans.

The origins of the crisis can be traced to the 2006/2007 softening of the property market in the United States. The quality and value of mortgage-backed securities triggered concerns among investors, who began to question whether they’d made the right decision. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that far too many banks and businesses had been liberally handing out cash to clients who had no plausible means of paying it back.

One-year Savings Bond Rates Soar, While Five-year Deals Rise Modestly / Personal_Finance / Saving Bonds

By: MoneyFacts

Starting a new year can be a great time to review the top savings rates, and reassuringly, average rates on one-year fixed bonds have hit a four-year high, according to the latest research by Moneyfacts.co.uk. However, this encouraging start to 2019 has not been seen in the five-year fixed bond market, with rates (although rising) not rising at the same pace.

Statistics released today show the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) fell to 2.1% during December, meaning 94 fixed rate bonds and 6 fixed rate ISAs (based on a £10,000 deposit) can now match or beat inflation*. Within that, 82 fixed bonds and 4 fixed ISAs beat 2.1%, still a small share of the standard savings market.

Rising Cost of Moving Home / Personal_Finance / UK Housing

By: Submissions

It continues to be a time of uncertainty for the housing market with the ongoing Brexit saga. Therefore many people are choosing not to move home, when they usually would have done so. The cost of moving home also continues to rise as expected. Here we cover the breakdown of the average costs in 2018.

It is difficult to figure out an exact overall cost but based around the average house price in the UK, and the different services required for moving home, it is likely to add up to around £10,000. This of course would include the main areas of buying, selling and moving home. This is all based around the average house sold in the UK which in 2018 was £224,144 (according to the Property Price Index).

You Will Probably Live Longer Than You Thought—But Can You Afford To? / Personal_Finance / Pensions & Retirement

By: John_Mauldin
