Seismic Geopolitical Impacts on Stock and Commodity Markets / Stock-Markets / GeoPolitics

By: Oxbury_Research

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThere's no doubt that geopolitical events have the potential to roil markets. And it's equally true that consideration of the broader sweep of history and its attendant social transformations can offer intelligent investors a chance to profit.

So, too, however, is it easy to miscalculate the impact of politics – and even significant military events – on the course of bull and bear markets. Especially in a world driven by 24 hour, live-hype media that would have you believe the sky is falling every time Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hiccups.

Mumbai Attack Setting the Stage for a New Indo-Pakistani Confrontation / Politics / GeoPolitics

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLast Wednesday evening, a group of Islamist operatives carried out a complex terror operation in the Indian city of Mumbai . The attack was not complex because of the weapons used or its size, but in the apparent training, multiple methods of approaching the city and excellent operational security and discipline in the final phases of the operation, when the last remaining attackers held out in the Taj Mahal hotel for several days. The operational goal of the attack clearly was to cause as many casualties as possible, particularly among Jews and well-to-do guests of five-star hotels. But attacks on various other targets, from railroad stations to hospitals, indicate that the more general purpose was to spread terror in a major Indian city.

Iran Returns to the Global Stage / Politics / GeoPolitics

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAfter a three-month hiatus, Iran seems set to re-emerge near the top of the U.S. agenda. Last week, the Iranian government congratulated U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on his Nov. 4 electoral victory. This marks the first time since the Iranian Revolution that such greetings have been sent.

While it seems trivial, the gesture is quite significant. It represents a diplomatic way for the Iranians to announce that they regard Obama's election as offering a potential breakthrough in 30 years of U.S. relations with Iran. At his press conference, Obama said he does not yet have a response to the congratulatory message, and reiterated that he opposes Iran's nuclear program and its support for terrorism. The Iranians returned to criticizing Obama after this, but without their usual passion.

Financial Crisis Illustrates Nation States Becoming Obsolete / Politics / GeoPolitics

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIn 1989, the global system pivoted when the Soviet Union retreated from Eastern Europe and began the process of disintegration that culminated in its collapse. In 2001, the system pivoted again when al Qaeda attacked targets in the United States on Sept. 11, triggering a conflict that defined the international system until the summer of 2008. The pivot of 2008 turned on two dates, Aug. 7 and Oct. 11.

The New American Century: Cut Short By 92 Years / Politics / GeoPolitics

By: Mike_Whitney

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAmerica's time as a superpower is coming to an end. The financial crisis was just the last straw. Whatever good faith was left after the invasion of Iraq, the shrugging off of international treaties and the shameless disregard for human rights, is now gone. The United States has polluted the global economic system with worthless mortgage-backed securities and, by doing so, has pushed 6 billion people closer to a long and painful recession. That's not something that can be easily forgiven.

World Seeks Geo-political Balance as Americans Remain Indifferent to Iraq War / Politics / GeoPolitics

By: Michael_T_Bucci

I must take issue with the common assumption that a majority of Americans were and are opposed to the Iraq war, or are in large measure "anti-war". While it is true that the Democrat party winning majorities in both houses generated this conception in 2006, this victory had much to do with protesting George Bush on numerous issues, one being Iraq .

Russia Georgia War - Washington Risks Nuclear War by Miscalculation / Politics / GeoPolitics

By: F_William_Engdahl

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe dramatic military attack by the military of the Republic of Georgia on South Ossetia in the last days has brought the world one major step closer to the ultimate horror of the Cold War era—a thermonuclear war between Russia and the United States—by miscalculation. What is playing out in the Caucasus is being reported in US media in an alarmingly misleading light, making Moscow appear the lone aggressor. The question is whether George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are encouraging the unstable Georgian President, Mikhail Saakashvili in order to force the next US President to back the NATO military agenda of the Bush Doctrine. This time Washington may have badly misjudged the possibilities, as it did in Iraq , but this time with possible nuclear consequences.
