The Electric Car Paradox: Can We Switch To Electric Cars ? / Commodities / Energy Resources
The simple answer is no - and the complicated answer is also no.
Consumers in almost any motorized car loving country, now including China and India whose car industries have until recently shown straight-line upward growth (with China already vastly outdistancing the USA by car output) have a common complaint at the fuel filling station. They whine and complain about oil prices because they buy gasoline and diesel fuel almost daily, at least regularly, and are keenly aware of price changes. These are usually upward.

Smart Meters and Dumb Technocrats / Politics / Energy Resources
At a time when public debt and deficits are out of control in the straight majority of OECD countries it is almost touching that "energy crisis" still has a bit-part role in state and corporate attempts at finding new ways to extract money from consumers and waste money on corporate kleptocrats. One of the biggest current attempts is the Smart Grid-Super Grid duo. While the second is almost pure fantasy, both technologically and financially, the first seems to offer attractive potential for gouging extra revenue from electricity consumers, to "Save the Planet" by swelling electric power company revenues and generating big ticket corporate spending on high tech gimmicks - 'Smart' Meters.

Top Energy Stocks by Oil, Gas, Uranium, Solar and Biofuel Sectors / Companies / Energy Resources
Marin Katusa, senior editor of Casey Energy Opportunities, spoke at the Casey Research/Sprott Inc. "When Money Dies" Summit and named the companies he sees as the best opportunities in the energy sector today. In this excerpt from his remarks, he gives background, warnings and targets that could help any investor trying to make money in energy. The goal today is to try to make money, and the key word is "trying." If you think that companies can't get cheaper, you may want to think again. Everyone always talks about November 2008 as the depths of the stock market collapse, but that wasn't the low. The low was actually March of 2009. So be aware of the dangers of trying to catch a falling knife. Even a multibillion dollar market cap company can lose more than 40% of its value in three months. So be careful.

Electricity Post Post-Carbon Future / Commodities / Energy Resources
VANITY TECH OR ECONOMIC IMPERATIVE ?
Back as February 2009, Lord John Mogg of the UK, president of the European Regulators Group for Electricity and Gas (ERGEG) charged by the European Commission (EC) with outlining further electric power system integration in Europe and the regulatory environment for this, said the winds are turning for European energy regulators. Since that time the facing winds are blowing very hard for European debt, deficits, economic growth and monetary stability, and a lot slower for high cost windfarm projects. This however remains the main hope for Low Carbon energy, with world windpower capacity attaining about 200 GW in early 2011. However, while wind itself is endless, natural and free, producing electricity with it is not: especially with offshore windfarms, capital costs can reach the fantastic level of around 7 500 euro per kiloWatt ($ 10 000/ kW), making windpower even more expensive, if less dangerous than nuclear power for electricity supply.

Mongolia Energy Riches Attract Neighbors and Outside Interests / Commodities / Energy Resources
Pity poor Mongolia, bereft of fiscal resources, caught between the ambitions of its superpower neighbors, Russia and China.Ulaan Bator's situation is akin to interwar Poland, dexterously attempting to reconcile its foreign policy between the USSR's hammer and Nazi Germany's hard place. Who will ultimately benefit is anyone's guess, but the country's nascent energy and mineralogical riches have opened the land of Genghis Khan to a fierce bidding war those ultimate outcome is unclear at best.

Global Energy Crisis, Germany Unplugged / Commodities / Energy Resources
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has recently warned us the world will face higher energy costs, higher carbon emissions and greater uncertainty over security of energy supply if it turns its back on nuclear power.

China Winning the Race for Central Asia's Energy Riches / Commodities / Energy Resources
Many western analysts have described the post-Soviet tussle for Caspain and Central Asian energy reserves as the new "Great Game, except this time around, Russia is facing the U.s. rather than the British empire. To a dispassionate outside observer however, what is most striking about the prolonged wrangle between Moscow and Washington for hydrocarbons, military bases and influence is the emergence of an understated sly newcomer who has managed to bag many of the region's assets - China.

Clean Energy: Coconuts vs. Swallows of Coal and Natural Gas / Commodities / Energy Resources
Bill Willoughby writes: There’s a memorable part in the 1970s movie Monty Python & the Holy Grail where King Arthur argues with a guard on a castle wall about whether a swallow could have carried a coconut to England, the punch line being is that an African or European swallow?
Fact checking about birds aside, the point of the story is if you don’t have the ability to lift a coconut you need to increase capacity by adding more swallows, that or find yourself an African swallow.
