Sheffield NHS UK GP Patient Survey Surgery Rankings 2009-10

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe highly credible Department of Health funded UK GP Patient Survey has continued to give patients a voice as to the actual quality of healthcare services they are in receipt of at their local surgeries across England.

The most recent data release covers 9 months from 1st April 2009 to 31st December 2009 which involved more than 4.1 million questionnaires being sent out to patients across England covering more than 10 question areas such as being able to book an appointment, or Waiting time at the surgery or concerning the practice opening hours and most importent the overall patient satisfaction at the quality of healthcare provided (www.gp-patient.co.uk).

For the city of Sheffield, in total 48,324 questionnaires were sent out to the patients of Sheffield's 91 GP surgeries of which 20,626 were returned, from which detailed results were compiled as listed below for the Overall Satisfaction category for all 91 GP surgeries in order of ranking from best to worst.

Sheffield's Top 5 GP Surgeries

  Level of Satisfaction
MILL ROAD SURGERY
99%
STANNINGTON MEDICAL CENTRE
98%
RUSTLINGS ROAD MEDICAL CENTRE
98%
DOVERCOURT SURGERY
98%
THE HEALTH CARE SURGERY
98%

Sheffield's best ranked surgeries all tended to cluster closely together, and tend to reside in the more affluent wards of the city which is reflective of the 'post code lottery' where those that reside in the affluent wards due to more likely being professionals are able to demand a better quality of NHS GP services than those that tend to reside in the deprived wards tend to suffer in silent as to what passes for health care provision which plays a significant part in contributing to a more than 14 YEAR GAP IN LIFE EXPECTANCY between peoples living just a few miles distance from one another, which has been commented upon by the Sheffield MP and Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg :

"It is an outrage that social mobility has slowed, not increased, under the Blair-Brown years. It is an outrage that in Sheffield, where I’m an MP, life expectancy in the poorest wards is a full 14 years below the life expectancy of those living in the wealthiest wards. Your life chances are now set by the circumstances of your birth as never before."

Sheffield's Bottom 5 GP Surgeries

HAROLD STREET MEDICAL CENTRE
80%
STONECROFT MEDICAL CENTRE
79%
HIGHGATE  SURGERY
75%
DARNALL HEALTH CENTRE (MEHROTRA)
70%
DARNALL COMMUNITY HEALTH
70%

Unlike the best ranking surgeries clustering closely together, the bottom ranking surgeries see a sharp drop off in the patient experience at the quality of health care from 85% to an abysmally poor ranking of just 70% of patient satisfaction for Darnall, something that the patients of Darnall have had to suffer with for many, many years, with no apparent effort by the Sheffield Primary Care Trust to get to the root cause of why Darnall's GP Surgeries (merged) consistently fail to perform to the satisfaction of a large number of its patients when other GP surgeries achieve 98% satisfaction ratings.

Sheffield GP Super Surgery Polyclinic NHS Healthcare Centre

The governments solution towards a poorly performing GP surgeries are the Super Surgeries or Poly Clinics. Sheffield saw its own GP Polyclinic or Super Surgery open during 2009 that aimed to fill the gap in delivering competent GP healthcare services, 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm.

The new Polyclinic is situated in the centre of Sheffield on the corner of Rockingham Street and Broad Lane, which allows any member of the public to walk in and see a doctor without the need to be registered with the health centre that offer a wide range of healthcare services. This is an important development as the traditional surgery staff have a procedural tendency to lose patients of their lists with the result that a patient attempting to make an appointment is told that they cannot do so because they are no longer registered with the surgery and have to complete a form and wait for a week or longer to be registered with the surgery. Off course, the GP surgery profits from the process of re-registering patients that the surgery themselves have removed so perhaps an Department of Health investigation is in order as to how widespread this practice is of generating extra revenues for surgeries from existing patients being forced to re-register.

New Healthcare Centre for Darnall

The Sheffield PCT's answer is to throw tax payer cash at the problem by building a new health care centre. However rather than take the opportunity to recruit the best caliber of staff for the new centre from across the country, instead the keys to the new multi-million pound health care centre will be handed over to the existing staff of the surgery which in my opinion amounts to a completed wasted opportunity that will result in little change.

GP Health Care Hot 2010 Local Election Issue

As the table suggests, 30% of Darnall Community Health's patients are dissatisfied with the quality of health care received, this amounts to at an estimated 7,000+ patients! Which given that winning councilors in the ward typically poll in the region of 2,200 votes does represent an extremely important election impacting issue for at least in terms of City Council seats. In this respect all councilors and candidates have been asked for their opinions on the subject to follow in the coming days.

I am currently working in UK for last 8 months. What I dislike most about UK is its NHS. It keeps people waiting for months after month. The GPs are mostly too reluctant to treat patients! Even simple tests like endoscopy, ultra-sound takes months long wait. My wife is having pain in stomach for last one month I visited doctor several times and they always say "Well your case has been referred to gastro entritis department and we can't do anything more about it" in the meantime, no treatment is going on for my wife - and from that department they sent me a letter which indicates that only 1 such test will be carried out for my wife after 1 month - the result will come after "several days" and other tests will be done after that ananlysis. Now can anyone tell me how long should I wait??? I am thinking of sending my wife to India (where my home is) so that she can get prompt treatment (there these tests can usually be arranged in week at most).

Can't I do anything without NHS? Isn't there any other private medical services? I have heard about BUPA - how is it? How expensive is it to avail such service?

Any help?
