Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThis article seeks to analyse patient feedback for the city of Sheffield from the data compiled by the Department of Health funded UK GP Patient Survey conducted by Ipsos MORI during early 2009 that sent out a questionnaire to 5.7 million NHS GP patients and therefore comprises the most comprehensive data available as to patient feedback of actual experience of using GP Services.

In total 57,759 questionnaires were sent out to Sheffield patients of which 24,696 were returned or 42.75% (click here for a sample survey).

Whilst the questionnaire contained many fields, however the most relevant fields towards the rating of Sheffield's GP Surgeries is the level of overall patient satisfaction with the quality of healthcare at the GP surgeries which is listed for all of the 91 Sheffield GP surgeries below in order of most overall satisfaction experienced.

Analysis

The data shows that 75% of Sheffield GP Surgeries result in overall patient satisfaction of more than 90%, which still left upto 1/10th of patients of these surgeries dissatisfied.

Overall 25% of GP surgeries failed to achieve more than 90% satisfaction rating which requires serious Department of Health attention as to why these surgeries are failing to deliver satisfactory healthcare services. However of greater worry is the quality of healthcare and overall experience of the patients of surgeries that scrape the bottom of the league table where as many as 34% of patients in the case of Highgate Surgery and 26% of patients in the case of Darnall Community Health are DIS-SATISIFED with the quality of healthcare and therefore gives credence to data that repeatedly points to a healthcare provision divide between affluent wards and deprived wards which is contributing to a more than 14 YEAR GAP IN LIFE EXPECTANCY between peoples living just a few miles distance from one another, which has been commented upon by the Sheffield MP and Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg :

"It is an outrage that social mobility has slowed, not increased, under the Blair-Brown years. It is an outrage that in Sheffield, where I’m an MP, life expectancy in the poorest wards is a full 14 years below the life expectancy of those living in the wealthiest wards. Your life chances are now set by the circumstances of your birth as never before."

In attempt to counter this disparity in healthcare provision the Labour government despite intense resistance from GP's across the country implemented the introduction of Polyclinics / Super Surgeries during 2008 with Sheffield's Super Surgery opening its doors in April this year.

However super surgery's mark just the first step along the route towards dragging GP surgeries kicking and screaming into the 21st century, with both Labour and the Conservative parties promising real patient choice of GP surgeries during 2010 against the old boys network that functions at the present time, therefore 'hopefully' allowing patients to easily switch from their existing under performing GP's usually situated within deprived wards to the better performing GP's in the more affluent wards. The next six months also gives the chronic under performers a final chance to get their act together and to start putting their patients first, else these surgeries will see their patient list haemorrhage towards surgery closure.

Other Key analysis of the UK Patient Survey data reveals :

Helpfulness of Surgery Reception Staff

A major repeat complaint of patients is the rough and ready treatment at the hands of reception staff, though it is not entirely the staffs fault as they do tend to be under paid and over worked as the tendency has been for GP practices to maximise profits for disbursement to the practice partners.

Top 10 Sheffield NHS GP Surgeries

Again Darnall Community Health and Highgate Surgery scrape the bottom of the health barrel, the staff and doctors in these surgeries have a lot to answer for with regards to what they are actually doing! However I will end this analysis on a positive note and that is Jaunty Springs Surgery is showing how a good surgery should be run, perhaps the GP's and practice manager at Darnall Community Health and the other under performing GP Surgeries should spend some time at Jaunty Springs to learn best practice in operating GP surgeries?

Sheffield NHS GP

I've had a chest infection now for nearly two months, my wife took our baby to the doctors the other day and she was prescribed with some nasal drops, and paracetamol.

My wifes nan caught it, was prescribed with anti-biotics and an inhaler as well as paracetamol.

My friend caught it, was prescribed with anti-biotics and an inhaler.

I'm spending a good few hours coughing up blood and foam every morning, not being able to breathe, waking up through the night coughing up foam, head hurts, love handles hurt, I have a fever and I passed out this morning and started convulsing.

Phoned NHS direct the other day and they informed me to go to A+E, I'm agorophobic I can't even remember when the last time I went out was.

They then inform me to phone my doctor and request a home visit, so I do exactly that.

The Sloan surgery refused to see me unless I go to them, I don't even know if I can make it to the surgery, needless to say I've never met my doctor, regardless of the fact I have needed them twice.

I'm not going to get a taxi just to go less than 500 yards, so I call my father in law and ask him if he'll take me to the walk in clinic at hallamshire (I'm not gonna go asking him to take me less than 500 yards either).

Anyway, I gets to the walk in clinic, and they just do a few checks and say, Its viral you will have to ride it out, I explain I've been riding it out for nearly 2 months.

Just looked on the NHS website and apparantly the only way to tell for sure what sort of infection you have is to either have a blood test, phlegm test, or an x-ray.

I got a cold stethascope and thats it, no inhaler, no anti-biotics, not even a couple of paracetamols for my constant headache, oh and I've still never met my doctor.

Why is mine viral when my daughters, nan-in-law, and friends is bacterial.

I once remember a decent doctor telling me to seek medical aid if I am coughing up foam, why? they don't do ought.

NHS service sux.

I can see why people would rather shoot themselves.
