Target Stock Canada's Failure Threatens American Investors / Companies / Retail Sector
Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) had one chance to make a good first impression in Canada… and blew it. And Target stock may soon feel the effects.

166 Trillion Reasons Why Bank Stocks Are So Cheap / Companies / Banking Stocks
Michael E. Lewitt writes: My continuing search for sectors of the stock market that are trading cheaply and offer the potential for gain has led me to a controversial slice of the market: bank stocks.
Looking at the "Big Four" in the U.S. banking sector, it's easy to conclude that the sector is undervalued…
But that conclusion may be a bit misleading.

Solar Power is at a Tipping Point (The Upshot is Massive Profits) / Companies / Solar Energy
Dr. Kent Moors writes: I have spent years tracking dozens of promising renewable energy companies.
And while the potential of these groundbreaking companies has always been tempting, there have always been limitations holding them back.
New projects require intensive amounts of working capital to make them fully compatible with traditional methods of generating power, and there’s the widely held assumption that renewables can’t survive absent government subsidies and benefits.

Legal “Steroids” Are Making This Tech Stock a “Buy” / Companies / Tech Stocks
Michael A. Robinson writes: Technology companies are a lot like major-league sports stars in that they often post their best results early in their careers.
Athletes’ bodies wear out, and they can compete at the highest levels for only so many years.
With high-tech corporations, however, the challenge isn’t age or health. It’s that there’s always a group of young start-ups with hot innovations breathing down the Old Guard’s necks.

UBS Fine - Nothing but a Limp Reprimand / Companies / Market Regulation
Shah Gilani writes: Policing Wall Street is hard work.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the undisputed top cop on the Street beat, has its work cut out for it. The enforcers at the SEC have to juggle what and whom they go after because, after all, they don’t have unlimited resources.

When a Trend Shifts Like This, Investors Can Get Rich / Companies / Investing 2015
Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Did you see the investing opportunity in the Golden Globe Awards last Sunday?
Not many investors did. It was easy to miss.
It wasn’t the dazzling fashion on the red carpet or the celebrities congratulating each other. What really struck me was a huge signal for money-making in our Technology trend.

Why Renewable Energy Is Attracting the Smart Money / Companies / Renewable Energy
Dr. Kent Moors writes: While everyone's been fixated on oil, renewable energy has been gathering some serious steam.
Led by solar power, worldwide capital investment in "clean" energy surged by more than 16% last year.
In fact, spending on renewable energy was so strong in 2014, some have begun to label the recent rush into renewables as a "turning point" in the energy balance.

CAT to Follow Crude Oil Price to $40.00? / Companies / Company Chart Analysis
Is it reasonable to assume that so goes Crude Oil, so goes Caterpillar? Perhaps it is, or perhaps not, but the price charts of these two economic giants do show a fair degree of correlation.
Some Motley Fools I know think there may be some fundamental correlations as well.
Interestingly, both properties share downside price targets of $40.00 dollars. The major difference is that Crude is very much leading the way with a recent print low of $44.78 per barrel, which is not too far from our technical target.

Rough Week For Stock Bulls But No Thrust Down Yet.... / Companies / Stock Markets 2015
It wasn't a good week for the bulls, but if we look back on this market as to whenever it corrects, it seems about 5% is mostly the normal drop. That's just what we got from the top many weeks back at the old highs on the S&P 500. Basically, it was a one hundred point move lower, or 5%. Let's face it, that's not even selling when you think of the risk this environment holds based on all the troubles it's facing from horrific monthly charts to froth, etc. We had a major breakdown through the diagonals on all the key-index daily charts, but there has been absolutely no real follow-through to this point.

Wrong on all counts.
More and more of today’s chipmakers locating their manufacturing facilities a bit off the beaten path these days – in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies… and a nation that some of you may find controversial.

Ackman: "We did look at Tesco, I’ll have to admit that" / Companies / Tesco
Bill Ackman , Founder and CEO of Pershing Square, discussed taking Pershing Square Holdings public and U.K. companies he was considering with Bloomberg TV's Francine Lacqua and Guy Johnson today. He said oil's drop is a "huge boon" to the U.S. consumer and helps "the vast majority" of the economy.
Ackman revealed he considered investing in Tesco in the last six months: "We did look at Tesco, I'll have to admit that. But we've had our difficulties with retail and a lot of structural changes going on that make that a more difficult business. We look occasionally at companies in the U.K.

JPMorgan Is the Latest Target on Goldman Sachs’ “Hit List” / Companies / Banking Stocks
Shah Gilani writes: This may be old news, but as far as history goes, a lot of us forget it.
And you know what happens then – we’re doomed to repeat it.
What I like about people forgetting history are the trading and investing opportunities that pop up when I can see the past coming back to haunt us before others do.

How the Terrorism "Trend" Is Moving Your Money Today / Companies / Sector Analysis
Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: As an analyst known for making bold and unusual predictions in pursuit of profits, I am usually inclined to celebrate when my “calls” are proven right.
But when it comes to the proliferation of one of the six primary trillion-dollar trends we’re following – War, Terrorism & Ugliness (WTU) – I’ve got to be completely honest. There are times when I am uncomfortable with the human cost of being right.
That’s certainly the case right now, following the horrific assassinations of 10 journalists and two police officers earlier this week at the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices in Paris. In case you somehow missed the news, the killings were allegedly carried out by two brothers who had become radicalized Muslims in the Parisian ghettos of Gennevilliers acting in response to cartoons portraying the prophet Muhammad.

Healthcare Tops as 4Q14 Earnings Struggle / Companies / Healthcare Sector
George Leong writes: It’s that time again; another quarter has come to an end. The fourth-quarter earnings season numbers will officially start flooding in for the S&P 500 on Monday, with Alcoa Inc. (NYSE/AA) the first to report. However, the stock market is currently in a funk, beginning 2015 with weakening oil prices and continued concerns over the global economy. The problem: as the stock market searches for a reason to buy, several segments are suffering from the selling pressure. There is, however, one segment expected to look up heading into 1Q15 and that’s the healthcare sector. But more on that potential investment opportunity in a moment…

Marc Lichtenfeld writes: After trading north of $90 since June 2012, the price of oil has crashed, falling more than 50% from its high this summer and dipping below $50 per barrel Monday.
Nearly every pundit out there is declaring low oil prices are here to stay. With the glut of oil being produced by OPEC and the U.S., the days of $90 oil are over, they claim.

Is Citi Bank the Next AIG? / Companies / Credit Crisis Bailouts
Back in December there was a flurry of press around the passage of a banking bill that was 1) reportedly written by Citigroup and 2) put taxpayers on the hook for over-the-counter derivatives, obscure financial instruments that periodically blow up and in which Citi had a big position. Distrustful cynics like Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren claimed to see a connection:

The "Jigsaw" Strategy for Investor Tech Stocks Profits 2015 / Companies / Tech Stocks
William Patalon writes: My wife Robin is a financial advisor and a CPA.
She also possesses one of the sharpest minds I've ever seen.
That's probably why she has such an affinity for jigsaw puzzles. Back in upstate New York, when we were both attending business school together at night, there was nothing she liked more to "decompress" during the lull between the semesters than to do a jigsaw puzzle.
