The Promise of AI / Politics / AI

In ‘The Terminator’ series of action films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, a cybernetic organism (cyborg) is programmed from the future to go back in time and kill the mother of the scientist who leads the fight against Skynet, an artificial intelligence system that will cause a nuclear holocaust.
Terrifying and at times comical (“I’ll be back”, “Make my day”) The Terminator cyborg was among the first presentations of artificial intelligence (AI) to a global audience. (“C3PO” and “R2D2” of Star Wars fame and “Data” from Star Trek also qualify) The robotic assassin also depicted an extreme scenario of what could happen when “machine learning”, a vital element of AI, runs amok - ie. when machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence to the point when the machines take over and try to eliminate the humans who created them.
While numerous facets of AI have been developed over the past couple of decades, all with positive outcomes, the fear of AI being programmed to do something devastating to the human race, of computers “going rogue”, continues to persist.

We are currently galloping full speed along an exponential curve that unlike the neural nets of the 1990's, that promised a lot but delivered very little, this time it really looks like we are on the verge of AI success, not only that but it heralds changes in every aspect of our lives most of which we cannot even imagine today, hence the term the singularity is often used, the AI event horizon beyond which we cannot see.
“Success in creating effective A.I.,” said the late Stephen Hawking, “could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization. Or the worst. We just don’t know.” Are we creating the instruments of our own destruction or exciting tools for our future survival? AI Machine Learning PC Custom Build Specs for £2,500 - Scan Computers 3SX / Personal_Finance / AI

My existing primary desktop PC that I had custom built by Scan Computers at a cost £2400 is now nearly 5 years o;d, where something with a similar spec would still cost at least £1000 today so whilst it still has some life left in it. Nevertheless it is time for my next generation custom built PC to cover computing for the next 4-5 years for both for continued use in data analysis, video and graphics work where my existing machine is not upto handling 4k footage properly. That and my latest analysis project of building a deep learning environment under microsoft windows via utilisation of Google's tensor flow, python and other libraries and toolkits such as by Nvidia, so the starting point for my build is for at least one good Nvidia graphics card with a large number of cuda cores, over 2000, that are basically 2000 mini cpu's.
