Silver Miners Strong in Grim Q4 / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
The silver miners showed impressive fundamental strength during 2015’s grim fourth quarter. That was the worst silver suffered in many years, a perfect-storm trough with major secular lows fueling extreme bearish sentiment. Traders feared this entire industry faced an existential threat, so they fled in terror from silver stocks. But silver miners’ strong operational performances aced that severe trial with flying colors.
Q4’15 may seem like ancient history now, but it was exceedingly important for the entire precious-metals realm. Gold slumped to a miserable 6.1-year secular low in mid-December, on the day after the Fed hiked rates for the first time in 9.5 years. That was wildly irrational based on market history, which has proven gold thrives during Fed-rate-hike cycles with big average gains. Gold hadn’t seen lower prices since Q4’09.

How to Use the CoT Report in Gold Investing? / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
The CoT report enables investors to peek behind the scenes of the gold futures market and to better understand the psychology of the marketplace and, thus, get a better idea of futures moves on the market. This is because the COT report shows the net long or short positions of different types of traders. The knowledge of how traders are positioned is useful, but what really matters are changes in their positions. Knowing that, for example, non-commercials have 175,000 contracts long is meaningless without the supplementary information whether they are accumulating more or starting to unload contracts over time.

Gold Bullion vs Gold Miners / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
For thousands of years, gold has been used as money, a store of wealth, fought over and sought after. Over the last 45 years, Western populations have had a mixed impression of gold. A minority of the population understands that gold is a monetary asset that should be held as wealth insurance. A larger percentage of the population is confused about gold because of mainstream sources of information. Many people consider gold a risky investment when in fact gold bullion is not an investment at all, but rather money itself. Just like any fiat currency held in a vault, gold does not pay interest or dividends. Investors often look upon gold mining companies in the same light as physical gold bullion. Gold mining shares are investments, and can be good tactical investments from time to time. However, the characteristics of gold bullion and gold miners are very different. In some ways, those differences are similar to the difference between an insurance policy and shares of an insurance company.

HUI Gold Stocks Update...Beautiful Chartology / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Below is a two year daily chart for the HUI which I first showed you when the HUI broke above the double bottom hump to start its bull market. I call this chart the reverse symmetry chart as shown by the red arrows. How a stock comes down, especially in a strong move, will reverse symmetry back up over the same area. It's more of an art than a science. You can see the rally off of the mid January low found a little resistance at 182 before it broke through.

Gold Miners Nub is the Sweat of the Sun / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Gold miners, because the number of discoveries was falling and existing deposits were being quickly depleted, have had to diversify away from the traditional geo-politically safe gold producing countries, ie Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. The move out of these “safe haven” countries has exposed investors to a lot of additional risk.
In many parts of the world capitalist hating Marxist governments are becoming greedy. Many countries might come to mind as places where shareholders could, without warning, receive news that their operations have been taken over, expropriated, by the government and/or its friends, or that permits are suddenly suffering delays or have been cancelled outright.

Gold Stocks Climbing Epic Wall of Worry / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
The gold stocks have had a tremendous rally in recent months that has left most investors and even gold bulls on the sidelines. From low tick to high tick GDXJ has more than doubled while GDX has nearly doubled. Indices such as the HUI and XAU have more than doubled. It has been a fantastic rally yet both anecdotal and actual data suggests there has been a major wall of worry building. Although gold stocks may be starting a correction, the presence of a strong wall of worry provides further confirmation of a major trend change.
In recent weeks readers and followers of various gold centric websites have been bombarded with bearish commentaries from pundits and analysts forecasting a correction. More than a month ago the reasoning was the commitment of traders (CoT) report. More recently, the reasoning revolved around an alleged “parabolic move” in the gold stocks and a budding head and shoulders top in Gold.

Gold Mining Stocks Reach First Resistance Target but Continue to Outperform Gold Price / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
The gold stocks have been on a tear lately as they continue to move higher in defiance of the bearish calls of numerous pundits and traders. After trading lower mid week and filling Monday's gap, the miners are set to close the week with some strength. While the miners are overbought and could remain below resistance for a little while, their strong outperformance of Gold remains a comforting signal for bulls.

Gold Stocks Double, To Double / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Gold-mining stocks surged higher this past week after breaking free from their high consolidation. This newest upleg catapulted gold stocks to a doubling in less than 3 months, a remarkable world-leading performance. But despite its quick doubling, this red-hot sector still has another easy doubling left to come from here. Gold-mining stocks still remain greatly undervalued relative to prevailing gold prices.
Gold stocks’ whipsawing journey so far this year has been nothing short of incredible. Back on January 19th, less than 3 months ago, the flagship HUI gold-stock index plunged to 100.7. Those levels were utterly astounding, as that was the HUI’s lowest close since July 2002. Back then gold was trading near $305, and had yet to exceed $329 in its young secular bull. Revisiting those levels felt like a gold-stock apocalypse.

Gold Miners Arrived At Huge Resistance After An Incredible Rally / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Gold is definitely story of 2016, at least so far. The yellow metal rose some 25% in the first quarter. That rally was impressive, but the performance of precious metals miners was even better, as the rally of most gold miners surpassed 100% in 2016. Incredible.
Is this the time to enter the gold mining space or stay on the sidelines?

Gold and Silver Shares – How High Can They Go? / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
In December 2003 Edward Gofsky wrote a great article titled,“The 21st Century Gold Rush:
How High Can Gold and Silver Stocks Go?
Higher Than You Might Think!!”
Being a bull on the precious metals I thought then what a great article. I have been in touch with Edward and he has given me permission to use his article.

HUI Goldbugs Index : Some Perfect Chartology / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Below is a daily chart for the HUI which shows one of the original patterns that formed the, what turned out to be a Diamond reversal pattern to the upside. There are at least several more reversal patterns that formed at this most important low. As you can see the Diamond had seven reversal point making it a reversal pattern to the upside. The breakout was accompanied by a gap and then a backtest to the top rail. Everything looked good to go at that point then after just four days of rallying the HUI quickly reversed direction and traded below the apex of the blue triangle which is not what I wanted to see as that usually is a bearish setup in this case.

Gold Mining Shares Topping, Drop Due / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Either we saw a top in the mining shares Friday or we will see it on Monday. The cycles suggest a low around April 19th and the e-wave pattern suggests a continuation higher after the bottom is put in, likely into early June.
The 8 year low still looms in the fall. I still believe we will see lower prices after the spring rally terminates, and lower stock prices and a strong dollar play havoc with the commodity sector.

Gold Stocks Correcting Through Time Not Price / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Gold Stocks enjoyed a fabulous, near vertical rebound into March yet were in extreme overbought territory. We and many others called for a correction. In recent weeks those other voices have worried excessively about the alleged bearish construction of the CoT. Although Gold and Silver have essentially consolidated with a little weakness, the gold stocks have continued to hold above even initial support. Over the past month they have corrected through time rather than price. The longer gold stocks hold above initial support, the greater the chance they are building a bullish flag consolidation.

The Gold-to-Silver Ratio: A Truly Generational PM Stocks Opportunity / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
This week's Gong Show in the global financial markets reminds me of the early 1980s before the advent of the Internet or online trading or blogs and especially before 30-something financial "advisors" were allowed to go on the national (and international) airwaves or Internet websites and babble on for what seem like days how "The Fed has our back!" as an excuse for buying stocks at 23 times forward earnings.

Gold Royalty Companies Continue to Progress / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
The large gold royalty companies remain among our top holdings, notwithstanding the high valuations and our comments on the overall gold market and short-term concern on the gold stocks.
Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd. (OR:TSX, $12.90) is all cashed up, as its two core royalties proceed well. It has about CA$650 million available for investments (of which CA$260 million is cash), after spending about CA$220 million in the last year on several royalties.

What to Watch For in Gold Price and Gold Stocks / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Gold and gold stocks finally showed a bit of weakness during the holiday shortened week. Gold had its biggest weekly loss in months, losing 3% to $1217/oz while the miners (GDX, GDXJ) declined about 5%. Silver lost 4%. If weakness in Gold and gold stocks continues then we should turn our attention to technical support and see if it will hold. Gold and gold stocks are trading above the 400-day moving average which has been key resistance since 2011. Holding that support in the days or weeks ahead would offer confirmation that a new bull has started.

Gold Stocks Spring Rally / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
The red-hot gold stocks have spent most of March in consolidation mode, grinding sideways near their 2016 highs. Interestingly this month’s rally pause is par for the course seasonally in gold-stock bull markets. Like gold itself, this sector tends to slump to a seasonal low in mid-March before embarking on a strong spring rally in April and May. With gold stocks back in a bull, their seasonality warrants consideration.
Seasonality is the tendency for prices to exhibit recurring patterns at certain times during the calendar year. While seasonality doesn’t drive price action, it quantifies annually-repeating behavior driven by sentiment, technicals, and fundamentals. We humans are creatures of habit and herd, which naturally colors our trading decisions. The calendar year’s passage affects the timing and intensity of buying and selling.

GLX, GLDX, Baby Gold Bull Market Stillborn? / Commodities / Gold and Silver Stocks 2016
Today felt like a short covering rally during the bear market years in the PM complex only in reverse. Days like today can make one think that the rally over the last two months is all she wrote for the new bull market.. Did the baby bull die at birth ? Maybe , but I’ll need to see more proof that the bear market for the precious metals stocks, that ended on January 19th of this year is back.
During a bull market it’s nice to see new highs being made even if it’s for the short to intermediate term time frame. Then to confirm a new uptrend we need to see higher highs and higher lows being made. Since the January 19th low we’ve seen the PM stock indexes making higher highs but we’ve not seen a higher low put in yet because the rally has been so strong. Tonight I would like to show you the new bull market for the GLDX, global explores, using horizontal support and resistance lines. You can apply the same principal to the other precious metals stock indexes like the HUI or the GDX.
