How To Fund Your College Education Without Any Danger Of Going Broke / Personal_Finance / Student Finances

By: Steve_Barker

Life after high school is not the end but merely the beginning of life encompassing more challenging encounters. In other words, college happens. Unlike what most movies and shows portray, university life is not exactly drunken parties, late-night gatherings, and irresponsible adulthood, at least not entirely.

As much as many of us want to spend college worrying solely about professors and focusing on self-discovery, reality has more things in store for incoming freshmen. The most common problem that college students encounter is their financial pool. Education, whether primary or secondary, is relatively expensive, and tertiary education is even more so.

The End of College Is Near / Politics / Student Finances

By: Jared_Dillian

I predict that 20% of colleges and universities will shut down or merge in the next 10 years, and probably more.

It was a good run.

Most people fail to understand that higher education is in itself countercyclical. When the economy is bad, and people lose jobs, many of them will go back to school.

You have probably heard about the for-profit education boom and bust. That is old news. You might not have heard that total enrollment has been declining for the last eight years as the economy has improved.

What comes next will pulverize nearly every institution of higher learning in the country, private and public.

The End of College Is Coming / Politics / Student Finances

By: Stephen_McBride

Every spring, millions of American high school kids are faced with this choice.

It sounds like a no-brainer. And it used to be a no-brainer... because college used to cost a reasonable amount of money.

As recently as 1980, you could get a four-year bachelor’s degree at a public school for less than $10,000, on average. These days it’ll cost you at least $40,000… or upward of $140,000 for a private school... or well over $250,000 for a top school.

Unless a kid has rich parents or a full ride scholarship, he must borrow a ton of money to pay for the privilege of attending college.

Why Back to School Season Should Scare You / Personal_Finance / Student Finances

By: Rodney_Johnson

It’s that time again – back to school season – when we have to drive a little slower, watch for flashing yellow signs that signal much higher ticket costs, put down our cell phones, and try to remember the rules on when to stop for school buses (always on your side of the road and, if the bus is facing you, when the road doesn’t have a median).

But those things aren’t scary, they’re just good safety precautions. The worrisome parts are costs and headcount.

Government-Pumped Student Loan Bubble Sets Up Next Financial Crisis / Interest-Rates / Student Finances

By: MoneyMetals

Presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are promising as much as $1.6 trillion in student debt forgiveness for millions of borrowers. Critics smell a cynical campaign ploy to try to buy the youth vote.

How is it either realistic or fair to declare an entire category of debt to be assumed by taxpayers?

Regardless, pie-in-the-sky proposals to cancel student debt shed light on a very down-to-earth problem for not only college students and recent graduates – but also for the economy and financial markets.

Student loans now rank as the second largest category of American consumer debt – bigger than credit cards, bigger than auto loans, and behind only mortgages.

8 Reasons Why Investment in Education Always Pays Off / Personal_Finance / Student Finances

By: Submissions

University brings about so much imagination within us. Secondary school is over and we think of furthering our education and obtaining the great successes that await us. It seems anything can be possible as we transition into adulting. Picture having the help of an Oxbridge diploma with the highest accolades. Companies scrambling to offer the best career opportunities and suddenly the corporate ladder seems to be much shorter. But then we consider all the baggage that comes with uni. The need to find time for assignments, devoting 4+ years of life to courses, and the cost of a quality education in the UK is quite substantial. With skyrocketing tuition, many wonder if the financial investment for a degree makes sense. For those of you on the fence about higher education, let’s take a look at 8 reasons why an investment in education will always pay off.

What Comes After a Trillion in Student Debt? / Interest-Rates / Student Finances

By: Jared_Dillian

Headline in Bloomberg the other day:

“Millennials Are Facing $1 Trillion in Debt.”

A trillion always sounds like a lot. It is a lot. But while the absolute number is large, that is not the issue.

The issue is what makes up this millennial debt. It’s mostly student loans, and a staggeringly high amount of these loans are in delinquency.

And this is at the top of an economic expansion!

On a societal level, imagine what happens if the economy takes a wrong turn and these student loans—which are already 10% delinquent—go to 40% delinquent?

Loan Shark Nation: Forcing Our Kids To Choose Between Student Loans And Everything Else / Personal_Finance / Student Finances

By: John_Rubino

It’s mid-winter, which means millions of high school seniors are winding up their childhoods and planning for what comes next. For many this next stage is college.

But in yet another example of how we baby boomers have rigged the system in our favor at the expense of pretty much everyone else, student loans – barely necessary when most boomers graduated 40 years ago – have become a life-defining problem for our kids and grandkids.

Student Debt Slavery II: Time to Level the Playing Field / Politics / Student Finances

By: Ellen_Brown

The lending business is heavily stacked against student borrowers. Bigger players can borrow for almost nothing, and if their investments don’t work out, they can put their corporate shells through bankruptcy and walk away. Not so with students. Their loan rates are high and if they cannot pay, their debts are not normally dischargeable in bankruptcy. Rather, the debts compound and can dog them for life, compromising not only their own futures but the economy itself.

“Students should not be asked to pay more on their debt than they can afford,” said Donald Trump on the presidential campaign trail in October 2016. “And the debt should not be an albatross around their necks for the rest of their lives.”

Student Debt Slavery Bankrolling Financiers on the Backs of the Young / Politics / Student Finances

By: Ellen_Brown

The advantages of slavery by debt over “chattel” slavery—ownership of humans as a property right—were set out in an infamous document called the Hazard Circular, reportedly circulated by British banking interests among their American banking counterparts during the American Civil War. It read in part:

Slavery is likely to be abolished by the war power and chattel slavery destroyed. This, I and my European friends are glad of, for slavery is but the owning of labor and carries with it the care of the laborers, while the European plan, led by England, is that capital shall control labor by controlling wages.
