Driverless Vehicles Powered by Artificial Intelligence / Companies / Auto Sector
The joy of driving was once an important part of the American Dream. Take to the open roads meant freedom and adventure. The utilitarian objective of moving from one place to another just does not seem to possess the same romance. As with all reminiscences of the past, the lingering memories like to keep the good times close and block out the troubles when possible. This same trait can be applied to the distinctly national love affair with the auto. But as with all things, times move on and many in the tech community believe that the next advancement in land travel will come from an AI revolution.

As Corporate Earnings Slow, What Will Happen To Taxes? / Companies / Corporate Earnings
Last week the Census Bureau reported retail sales for December, and the numbers weren’t pretty. Sales dropped 0.1% overall last month, and were down the same 0.1% when auto sales were excluded. Removing volatile gasoline sales only moved the number to flat. Making matters worse, retail sales increased a paltry 2.1% for all of 2015 – the smallest gain since 2009, and well below the 3.9% growth in 2014.The report justified our negative view on earnings. Fourth-quarter numbers should be ugly. All of this plays right into our forecast for a general market decline and tough economic conditions in the months ahead.

BP Upstream Getting Crushed / Companies / Oil Companies
BP’s announcement earlier of another 4,000 job cuts on top of existing measures designed to ease the pressure of rapidly tumbling oil prices comes as no surprise, especially with crude oil prices tumbling to a brand new multi-year low. The industry has fallen to such depths that the Saudi’s are even contemplating taking a piece of their petroleum empire public to raise desperately needed cash to continue waging their price war. However, the current British Petroleum is on Saudi Aramco, and stands as a shadow of its former self. Now, with oil prices set to stay depressed for an indefinite period of time, BP is trimming what remains of the company to weather the storm while trying to boost shareholder value.Read full article... These tables present the 10 stocks in each US sector of the total US stock market ranked by how close they are to their 1-year trailing high price as of December 24, 2015. To be included in the filter universe, each stock had to have a 3-month average Dollar trading volume of at least $10,000 per minute.
This is not a recommendation to buy or sell any of these stocks. It is merely a snapshot of where we are at essentially year-end 2015.

Semi Bearish? - A Technical look at Semi Stocks and the Semiconductor Index / Companies / Tech Stocks
I must be bearish the Semi Equipment sector because I am short both LRCX and AMAT; the former a successful NFTRH+ long position that hit target and found resistance as anticipated by this chart originally included with the update. I am not so worried about the gap because it changed the trend and gaps that alter the trend of a stock can take a long while to fill.

Tek Stocks SEMI Book-to-Bill Ratio Decelerates as Expected, Semis Not Under Valued / Companies / Tech Stocks
I see analysis out there discussing the Semiconductor sector as a whole as being under valued relative to other stock market sectors. This seems to be based on the fact that the SOX chart has not made nearly the catch up move that for example, the NDX has in its post 2000 recovery.
While charts can provide many helpful views to probabilities, they cannot get inside an industry and divine the importance of a sub-sector (Semi Equipment; AMAT, LRCX, etc.) within a sector as a whole. The equipment companies (which I am short) are the Canary's Canary, with the Semi sector in general being an economic Canary in a Coal Mine.

Business Mergers Soar in 2015 / Companies / Mergers & Acquisitions
What does a CEO do when the economy is in a persistent down turn and your business cannot expand or grow? Jump at the time tested strategy of acquisition to gain market share seems to be the response in 2015. Yet a merger is no sure thing. Anyone remember AOL’s deal to buy Time Warner. How did that turn out? Just how much additional efficiency can be squeezed out of any company? In the era of part time contract workers and low wages, all the fat has been long gone. As for research and development in new technology or products, how will such innovation be marketed in an economy infatuated with the promise of Amazon Prime drone deliveries?

David Crane Resigns
In case you missed it David Crane resigns Thursday and the stock gets hammered on Friday to the likes of almost 20% at one point in trading, putting in a low print of $8.81. Hopefully the more sophisticated investors out there bought some calls three month`s out as NRG Energy is a definite takeout candidate with this shockingly low stock price given its actual assets.

Why Getting Valuation Right Is So Important To Retired Dividend Growth Investors / Companies / Pensions & Retirement
Although getting valuation right before you buy a stock is critically important to the long-term oriented retired dividend growth investor, it is not a short-term market timing concept. My point is that short-term market movements are typically volatile and unpredictable. The reason is simple. Over short periods of time, which I define as less than a business cycle (3- 5 years), emotion has a major effect on stock prices.

Corporatist Economic Espionage / Companies / Cyber Crime
Espionage is about gathering information. When foreign interests conduct such operations it is usually called spying. When corporations seek to acquire trade secrets from a competitor, it often becomes a case for legal litigation. In business terms, just what is the best way to view stealing secrets? Investopedia defines 'Economic Espionage' accordingly.

Apple Stock is a 10-Year Short - Bear Market Environment / Companies / Apple
Holiday Melt Up in Stocks
Apple and most stocks do routinely well during the 4th quarter, and especially the last couple of months of trading after earnings are out, and the fund managers are pushing everything up with the goal of making their trading numbers by year end window dressing. It is amazing more people don`t realize this phenomenon and just buy December expiration calls on the SPY after the usual selloffs that happen in the third quarter, and wait for the holiday rally where stocks routinely melt up at year end.

Investors Watch Out For The Auto Industry… / Companies / US Auto's
If you’re looking into buying your dream car in the next few months – think twice! At the bottom of the stock crash in early 2009, I bought a dream car – a 2008 Maserati GranTurismo – at 22% off. I got the manufacturing margin and the dealer margin completely taken off. Six months earlier, I would’ve paid a slight premium. Instead, I got a discount.

Volkswagen - The Ultimate Insult / Companies / US Auto's
Ten years ago an airline ran a television ad showing weary business travelers, asking the question: “Why do they do it?” Eventually one of the travelers looks up and says: “For the miles!”At the time, I was part of the bleary-eyed crowd of travelers. I racked up tons of miles, mostly on American Airlines, hopping from one speaking engagement to another, along with conferences and general business meetings.
