Shifting Undercurrents In The US Stock Market / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Chris_Vermeulen

Even as we write this post, the US Stock Market continues to push higher as global traders and investors pour capital into the continued US rally.  The strong US Dollar continued to attract capital from around the globe and with fresh earning about to hit from Q4 2019, investors are expecting another round of solid income and earnings growth.

Yet, underlying all of this is the undercurrent of shifting capital into safe-havens like precious metals, Cryptos, and under-valued foreign markets.  This shift started to happen late in Q4 2019 and accelerated early in 2019.

U.K. Markets Showing Stable Recovery / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Submissions

Recent moves in the U.K market have highlighted deteriorating sentiment levels as a result of continued Brexit uncertainties.  However, it can be argued that many in the market have overreacted in response to these events as a limited impact has actually been seen in equities.

As a clear expression of these trends, the U.K. 100 Index retraced some of its prior gains during the trading period that spanned from July to August of this year.  In the process of these declines, U.K. stock markets have fallen through their 50-day and 200-day exponential moving averages.  In most cases, traders will view these types of events as exceedingly bearish.

Elliott Wave Analysis of the FTSE futures / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: WavePatternTraders

The strong reversal from the April 2018 high appears impulse looking on a few world stock markets, particularly the FTSE and NIK-225. So we are focussed on the cleaner patterns from the April high. Having put in a 5th wave to end an impulse wave from the April 2018 high a few days back, the subsequent bounce we have seen over the last few days is of no surprise to us, its actually what we want to see, as we are looking for a partial retracement in 3 or 7 waves to offer a bearish setup for a move lower.

FTSE 100 Stocks Index Holds Support at 7140 / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Submissions

Dividend Investments : Stock markets are broadly higher and the UK economy looks to be supportive of these trends.  Growth in gross domestic product (GDP) figures and in Industrial Production has prompted the Bank of England to drastically revise its interest rate schedule as there is now an indication that consumer inflation levels could begin to become problematic if further action is not taken.  This has sent valuations in the GBP higher, but this has also led to some stalling in the FTSE 100 stock index.

FTSE Possible Double Top Before Lengthy PBrexit Consolidation / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Ken_Ticehurst

The FTSE has had a dramatic run since Brexit and appears on a short term basis to be overbought, our current forecast is for a high over the coming weeks at or about 7,000, this short term top remains likely as long as the 10, 20 and 50 day moving averages remain in positive alignment.

You will notice the 300 day moving average beginning to turn up in a positive fashion in our forecast whilst price becomes weak, that is a perfectly reasonable part of a consolidation process. The 50 day moving average should act as support if we get a mini consolidation before we get to 7,000.

FTSE Bounce to Prove Brief / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: AnyOption

The bounce in capital markets across the globe amid speculation of expanded stimulus from the European Central Bank and looser lending conditions in China may have sent risk assets and equities higher, but the positive sentiment is unlikely to last.  Worsening fundamental conditions in the United Kingdom combined with a weak external environment have contributed to the sizable decline in FTSE 100 equity index over the last several months, with the benchmark dipping into a bear market last month following a widespread market selloff.  A number of lingering issues continue to plague the index, keeping the pressure on performance high as concerns about the drag from energy, softer industrial activity, and another bout of regional bank weakness are offset gains from a more competitive Pound.

FTSE 100 Following Macro Trends in Peripheral Markets / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: MBM_Research

Stock market bulls have seen some discouraging activity in the equities space over the last few months, and many traders are looking for an indication that declines in the major stock benchmarks have reached an exhaustion point.  Those that have been caught long at the highs are likely showing even more concern, as positions based on the multi-year positive momentum have likely given back most of their gains.

UK Stocks FTSE Poised for Bounce / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Richard_Cox

For most of this year, investors have been fixated on the monthly performances seen in the S&P 500.  There is good reason for this, as most of the market is still trying to assess whether or not the index can maintain its record levels into the end of 2015.  So it is not surprising to see ETFs like the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF (NYSE: SPY) getting as much attention as it has.  But when we take a step back and look for alternative trends in other areas of the market, some interesting opportunities start to become clear.

FTSE 100 Could Rise on Rates / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Richard_Cox

Stock markets in the UK have been attempting to recover from recent declines and regain the foothold that was established earlier this year in the 7140 region.  Most global stock benchmarks have had a positive year in 2015 but the story has been somewhat different in the UK where there is still the peripheral impact of sovereign debt in the Eurozone to complicate investment ideas.

FTSE 100 Stocks Index Could Rally on Greek Resolution / Currencies / UK Stock Market

By: Richard_Cox

When we look at some of the biggest financial news headlines of the year, it is difficult to discount the continued discussions that have centered around the European sovereign debt crisis.  This might sound like a throwback to 2012, but these are issues that have once again resurfaced and might be even more important now than they were just a few years ago.  This is largely because there are factors that solidify the need of one or more countries to exit the monetary union.

FTSE 100 Ready For Reversal / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Richard_Cox

Stock investors have been very kind to the FTSE 100 stock index for most of this year.  This outlook has been supported by forecasts for low interest rates into the second half of this year and by stronger than expected corporate earnings in most industrial sectors.  According to one options think-tank this has led to increased buy flow activity for a number of different trading strategies -- and these reports can be largely confirmed by the price activity that has been seen in stocks for both the options and futures markets.

FTSE 100 Is Reaching A Turning Point / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Richard_Cox

Recent rallies in the FTSE 100 have been nothing short of impressive ISHARES FTSE 100 UCITS ETF (LON:ISF).  These are moves that have been inspired by low inflation levels, strong consumer spending, and better than expected corporate earnings in the region’s largest companies.  This is the type of fundamental backdrop that supports the prospects for continued rallies.  But when we look at price levels in their current form, there is some reason for caution in the near term.

UK Stock Market Ready To Reverse? / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Richard_Cox

Over the trading sessions seen last week, UK markets have posted some declines that have caused concern for many investors that are long equities.  So the next question to ask is whether or not this is a true bearish reversal of the longer term bullish trend.  If this is the case, it would be a good idea for investors to start taking profits on long positions while prices are still holding at relatively elevated levels.  But if this is not the case, the latest declines could prove to be a good opportunity to continue buying in UK equity markets or to establish new long positions for those that do not already have exposure in regional stocks.

The strong decline on the FTSE over the past few weeks may have come as a surprise to many traders but for us it was expected. It really could not have gone any better for members. Stock Market FTSE 100 Sending Red Warning Flag Signals / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Michael_Noonan

One of the best aspects of reading developing market activity is that it reduces any market to the opposing forces of supply and demand. It can be any organized market, anywhere. The factors of fear and greed universally apply to all investors/traders.

Reading developing market activity, in context with past price behavior, is a short- hand way to follow what smart money is doing. Smart money represents the controlling influences behind price movement. We recently did an analysis on the German DAX, [Different Country, Different Culture. People Are People, Charts Are Charts, http://bit.ly/ZDvxeg]. What held true for that analysis equally holds true for the FTSE 100.

UK FTSE 100 Stock Market Index Triple Play Fibonacci Analysis / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: David_Knox_Barker

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticlePrice, time and sentiment represent a three dimensional approach to technical analysis of any market or security. The Fibonacci drill-down grid method is particularly instructive at the current price juncture in the UK FTSE 100. The key to this three-dimensional method is to identify the "hot" Level 1 grid, i.e. the high and low in a Fibonacci grid that produces an extended numbers of clear turns on Level 1 and Level 2 grid lines.

FTSE 100 Hits 2009 Stocks Bull Market Target of 5000, What's Next? / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe FTSE 100 stock market index broke above 5,000 by closing at 5,004 for the first time since the financial collapse of September 2008.

Whilst the highly vocal public perma bears have frightened much of the investing public into sitting on the sidelines, too frightened to commit and leaving the smart money to accumulate at rock bottom prices, readers following my analysis of the stealth stocks bull market will have been left with little doubt of where I expected the market to head with first a clear target for the bear market bottom at the start of the year confirmed in March, and then the subsequent stealth bull market mapped out throughout 2009 as the following illustrate before I get to where I expect the FTSE is headed to next.

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleI am expecting the FTSE stock market index to follow a similar trend to the Dow Jones, however the ongoing currency crash means that the FTSE 'should' perform relatively more strongly than the Dow as a consequence of the exchange rate movement. The in-depth analysis of October 2008 - Stocks Bear Market Long-term Investing Strategy that accurately forecast the 20% corrective rally (that appears to have terminated) to be followed by a subsequent stocks bear market low in Mid 2009, included was the strategy of scaling into the market at the rate of 10% of funds allocated to stock market investing per each month that the stock market was within 10% of its lows. The bear market rally following the October low has been very weak, which suggests much lower trading than the October low.

Whilst the City and Threadneedle Street grapple with the onset of credit impaired securities and the heretofore unconsidered realisation that leverage cuts both ways, the High Street is largely unaware of what is coming down the track. UK and European markets are tracking about a quarter behind our cross Atlantic cousins so the path is relatively clear to see although the return to earth of the UK housing market will follow a different course to that in US.

FTSE 100 Stock Market Index Showing Remarkable Strength / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe FTSE 100 Indexes January plunge to below 5350 set up the scenerio for a relief rally towards resistance at 6000, which would again be followed by a retest of the January lows the outcome of which was set to determine the trend for much of the year. On Wednesday, the FTSE managed to recoup much of the days earlier losses that had seen the FTSE decline to a low of 5814, closing just 30 points down on the day at 5890, this is evidence of remarkable strength in the light of an anticipated reaction towards the January low of 5350 following a break of 50% of the advance to the 6071 relief rally peak.

The Stock Market - FTSE Bull or Bear? / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Fat_Prophets

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleSo far, 2008 has been an extraordinary year for investors. Sharp falls in December and January, which culminated in last Tuesday morning's panic selling, saw the FTSE100 down more than 20 percent from October highs. This supposed magic 20 percent figure sparked widespread talk of an 'official bear market'. But for the remainder of the week, the market rallied, thus pulling us out of bear market territory. Does this mean we're back in a bull market?

"On the one hand we have a contracting global credit bubble and on the other we have the US authorities manning the liquidity pumps to stimulate a flagging economy. "

Stocks Secular Bear Market / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Zeal_LLC

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleBack in early October when the benchmark S&P 500 stock index was hitting all-time highs, “bear” was a heretical four-letter word. Merely letting it roll off your tongue or spill from your pen offered a fast track to pariah status. In the best of times, people tend to forget that the worst of times are even possible anymore.

But after the most brutal new-year selloff in market history, investors and speculators are far more receptive to the usually taboo topic of stock bears. Most on Wall Street consider a bear market a 20% decline from the latest interim high. This week we came pretty darned close to a 20% slide in S&P 500 (SPX) terms.

Broading Stock Market Top Offers Proshare Shorting Profit Opportunities / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Donald_W_Dony

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMuch has been written recently about the current market conditions. Many research reports maintain the concept that new highs in the equity markets can be anticipated in the near future. Yet month after month, fundamental and technical evidence continues to build a picture of a cooling U.S. economy and the fledgling start of a mild recession. One of the earliest indicators of mounting economic weakness came from one of the most reliable indicators; the banks.

FTSE 100 Index 2008 UK Stock Market Forecast 2008 / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleDoom and Gloom pervades the UK economy as we enter into 2008, which is 'usually' an excellent atmosphere for stocks, especially if that doom and gloom to date has not resulted in anything other than corrections. Not even the crash in the financial sector that has seen many big banks fall by as much as 50% off their 2007 highs has managed to dent the FTSE 100 Index with barely registerable declines on the long-run FTSE 100 chart.

Speculation is rife of a high risk of a recession for the UK economy during 2008. However the last analysis in this current series for 2008 on UK GDP growth concluded with the opinion that despite early year weakness the UK economy will avoid a recession, this coupled with falling interest rates will be supportive of the UK stock market during 2008.

The details of this analysis are contained within the archives. Accompanied by the scenario for the relative under performance of the asian markets as of late October and into the new year, which continues to be borne out by actual price action.

FTSE 100 rally from the recent lows appears to have ended and is signaling a third leg of the down trend that targets a new low for the year for the FTSE 100 Index. This is on the back of the continuing crash in the financial sector due to the ongoing Subprime sparked credit crunch.

FTSE 100 Index UK Stock Market Summer Correction Over? / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Nadeem_Walayat

The US Subprime fallout in the form of the ongoing Credit Crunch has taken the FTSE 100 Index sharply lower in a short space of time. The FTSE has fallen into the target zone of 6050 to 6000 and therefore implies that the correction is over and a strong rally is now due. The ongoing impact of hedge fund failures is likely to impact the stock markets across the world for some time to come therefore will be a factor in generation of short-term volatility in the UK Stock market for many more months.

Foot and Mouth Outbreak to Hit FTSE 100 Index / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Latest reports suggest that the Foot and Mouth virus strain to hit the UK on Thursday is one that is NOT normally found in animals and is linked to vaccines. The strain is thought to originate from the Institute for Animal Health just three miles from the outbreak farm.

The last out break of Foot and Mouth disease in the UK in 2001 cost the Economy an estimated £10 billion ($20 billion) with the agricultural and tourism sectors of the economy hit hard. The government at the time was accused of gross incompetence in the handling of the crisis which saw the destruction of more than 6 million animals and closure of much of the British countryside as well as export bans.

FTSE 100 Index Crashes to 6250 - Whats Next ? / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Nadeem_Walayat

The long awaited summer stock market correction finally kicked into gear this week. The FTSE fell sharply by its largest one day fall in some five years to 6250. Before I get to the current technical picture, the writing for the sell off has been on the walls ever since the warnings flashed to financial markets during the China initiated February 2007 sell offs.

FTSE 100 and Dow Jones Stock Market Analysis and Outlook / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Nadeem_Walayat

The FTSE last week fell and hit its target of 6000, followed by the anticipated bounced as summarised below. (Article - 13th March 07)

FTSE 100
The FTSE 100 is targeting 6000, there is a strong probability of the FTSE holding 6000 (5990 low). Further downside appears limited in the immediate down swing.

The FTSE continued its rally on Monday to complete the target requirements for the bounce from 6000. I.e. to effectively put in a lower high, and therefore now again targets a trend back to 6000.

Weekly Stock Market Technical Analysis Report - 17th March 2007 / Stock-Markets / UK Stock Market

By: Mike_Burk

The good news is: The weakness that began late last month should end soon, although, there is likely to be one more leg down.

Short Term
New lows dry up quickly after a bottom has been reached.

The first chart is an update of one I showed last week, it covers the past 6 months showing the S&P 500 (SPX) in red and a 10% trend of NYSE new lows (NY NL) in brown. Dashed vertical lines have been drawn on the first trading day of each month and NY NL has been plotted on an inverted Y axis to make the chart easier to read (up is good).

By: Nadeem_Walayat

29th 12 2004 FTSE 100 Forecast for 2005

A Quick Review of 2004

2004 Was a volatile year for the stock market, where the market moved between 4300 to 4600 for much of the year. The market ended the year at 4814, which represents a relatively poor gain of about 7.5%, Now for the good news ! - The FTSE ended the year near its highs with the bull market that began in March 2003, INTACT ! Which suggests more gains for the FTSE during 2005.
