Slow Down the Ageing Process by Lifting Weights to Increase Lean Muscle Mass
Personal_Finance / Life Extension Jul 08, 2019 - 03:41 PM GMTWe are currently galloping full speed along an exponential curve that unlike the neural nets of the 1990's, that promised a lot but delivered very little, this time it really looks like we are on the verge of AI success, not only that but it heralds changes in every aspect of our lives most of which we cannot even imagine today, hence the term the singularity is often used, the AI event horizon beyond which we cannot see.
My latest analysis in this series focuses on how to profit and capitalise on the unfolding machine intelligence driven mega-trend through investing in leveraged to AI Human Life Extension stocks.

Slowing Down the Ageing Process
Lifting Weights to Increase Lean Muscle Mass
If one wants to slowdown the ageing process than one needs to emulate a young body. Which means less fat and more muscle mass. Therefore the starting point for combating ageing is strength training, lifting weights increases muscle mass over time and you don't want to wait until you hit 50 before you start weight training. For instance I have been regularly lifting weights since I was about 15 which now by age 51 I am sure has played a significant part in my not being on any medications for the treatment of any age related condition.
So if you want to combat ageing than if you have not already done so consider starting to lift weights to increase muscle mass. You don't need to rush out and get a expensive gym membership or equipment i.e. weighing down a couple of bags will get you started. Then soon progress onto kettle bells, a couple of dumbbells.
How to Strength Train
Yes, we know it's all about lifting weights. But the critical mechanism for increasing strength is to progressively increase the load on the muscles to exhaustion. For example if you are only able to to lift a 10kg kettle bell for 10 repetitions (reps) on your first set until failure, then at you next workout you will aim to either match those 10 reps or exceed them by 1 i.e. your next first set will be 11 reps and so on for each set of your workout.
Eventually you will be doing more than 20 reps per set and so it will be time to increase the weight used from 10kg to 15kg which perhaps will knock the number of reps back down to 10, and once more repeat the process of first matching and then increasing reps for each set at each subsequent workout until your number of reps exceeds 20 and thus it is time to increase the weight once more. Though steer clear of attempting 1 rep max's, as these greatly increase the risks of injury.
And that is how to strength train. Someone just starting out will see a rapid increase in reps and weights over their first 6 months of regular strength training thank for instance someone who has been training for decades. But at a minimum one maintains their max rep count for a particular set. Though as one ages this does become increasingly more difficult maintain as it takes longer for ones body to recover from a workout before the next one so workout frequency reduces. But so far I have managed to always train at my maximum reps for each set, even if the rate of increase in rep count has slowed to for instance just a 1 rep increase for a workout every month or so. Still I can say I am stronger today than at any time in my life and still slowly continuing to get stronger, all of which helps combat and slow down the ageing process.
In fact if you have not already done any strength training or stopped several years ago, then a good personal study into it's effectiveness on virtually every aspect of your biology is to have a comprehensive blood work done before you start and then after 6 months of regular strength training have another blood test and compare the difference and I am sure you will see the health markers such as cholesterol, blood sugar are moving in the right direction, as you will have effectively turned back your biological clock as your body increasingly emulates that of a younger body.
Strength training IS probably the single most important thing you can start to do today to slowdown and even reverse the ageing process. Though remember NO drugs such as steroids or the pro hormones for they will actually act to SHORTERN your life!
