How long does Google have to reference a website?
Companies / Google May 20, 2019 - 12:04 PM GMTHow long does it take before a site is properly referenced on Google? Are you thinking about submitting websites to Google? Indexing new sites is a real challenge of patience. In fact, Google’s algorithms take into account over 200 factors when indexing a page. What’s more, many webmasters don’t know how to reference their websites on search engines. In this article, I’ll show you what you need to do to be indexed. There are lots of myths and outdated information revolving around SEO, because everyone wants to be at the top of the results. I’ll break those and tell you the truth. Hopefully, this information will even save you money.
Indexing, Positioning? What do all these Terms mean?
- SEO is the process of getting your website up to the shape it has to be so that search engines are able and willing to include it in their index. It includes technical stuff, building content on your website and building links to your website.
- Indexing is the action of a search engine to save all the web pages of your site in its database.
- Positioning is the place your website gets when displaying the search result. Everyone wants their site to appear on the first page of the results. The higher, the more clicks it usually gets.
Register with Search Engines
Formerly, major search engines had a page where you could insert your URLs and they would get indexed in a few weeks or so. This is not the case anymore and Google, for instance, uses Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) for this purpose.
Indexing: help the Search Engine save all your pages
Big search engines index billions of pages and they estimate that at least half of them get missed out. However, to ensure that doesn’t happen to your site, there is an official and standard method you can use to help them: the "sitemap.xml" file
The creation of the "sitemap.xml" file is essential to the success of your SEO and indexing. It has 2 functions: to make a complete list of all your pages and inform the search engine which pages have been modified since their last visit. Google will index these last pages and will not waste his time with others. I noticed that a modification could be posted a few days later! Otherwise, the time it takes is 1 to 4 weeks. If you do not have a "sitemap.xml" file, you may have to wait for 6 months before the search engine displays your changes.
One you have a working sitemap, you will need to submit it in your account on Google Search Console. After a few days, Google will even provide an overview of how many pages from your sitemap got indexed and what’s the problem with the rest. Just go to the "Coverage" report.
Test your Website and optimize it
Good, unique quality content will give you a good SEO indexing ranking. However, if the site is slow because of your content, indexing will be partial and sanctioned by a bad position, far behind other competitors. It is helpful to understand how the indexing robot works and what good practices will improve positioning and visibility.
Is Indexing in Google Free?
While SEO services might be expensive, you don’t have to pay anything to register an account in Google Search Console and submit your website with all its URLs in a sitemap. It’s totally free. If you’re a local business, also consider registering into Google Maps with Google My Business. So far, it’s free too.
