Relocation: Everything You Need to do for a Smooth Transition Abroad

Justin Weinger writes: Dreaming of moving abroad? It’s not full steam ahead until you’ve sorted out some vital things including your finances, your housing and where on earth you’re going to store all of your belongings in the meantime. Here’s a relocation guide that will benefit you no matter where you’re going.

The relevant paperwork (checked once, twice, three times)
There’s a lot of paperwork involved in an international move, so it’s absolutely essential that you have all of the documents that you need for any easy transition. Depending on where you’re going, you may need to apply (and be accepted) for a visa; you’ll certainly need tax forms, the necessary health documents and even paperwork for any pets you’re intending on bringing along with you. Make sure you make multiple copies of everything so that you’re not left without when you get there. Sometimes there’s nothing more stressful than having to ring the Embassy to help you.

Shipping and storage
You might not have already thought about it, but a big move requires a lot of storage room and, in the case of moving abroad, shipping costs. Do your research first, and you’ll be able to work out just how much you think it might cost. Moving large items such as furniture or even your car to your new location can be a huge strain on your wallet.

Understand healthcare options
Of course, different countries have different regulations regarding healthcare, so you’re going to need to know your options before you make that place your home. Regarding documents, you’ll need proof of vaccinations, a note of any ongoing prescriptions and paperwork about any international coverage you might have.

Set up your bank account
You’ll begin to envy just how easy your current banking system is when you start the process of setting one up in a different country. Cross-border banking clearances can take some time to clear so you should always start the process of setting up a bank account before you move. Remember to arrange for any recurring bills to be moved over to your new account and understand the tax situation before you start a new job there.

Plan for the unexpected
Worrying – but true. You should always be aware that something might go wrong during your move whether that be your items going missing in transit, your healthcare plans falling through or your bank account taking longer than expected to set up. In the case of the latter, it’s probably worthwhile having a little bit of cash set aside just in case anything goes wrong and you need to quickly book a flight back home. In the worst case, the plans you’ve made for your new home might fall through which is why it’s always worth contacting a professional such as Monaco Relocation Services that can help you every step of the way.

Hopefully, our quick guide has helped you to prepare for your move, wherever you’re dreaming of beginning your new life!
