NDX Closes in Plus Column as Market has Interesting Day

The day started out with a big gap at the opening, had a very sharp, pullback retest midmorning, then a 5-wave advance that was much stronger on the Nasdaq 100 than the S&P 500, they pulled back, bounced around, held support, and closed positive on the Nasdaq 100, but the S&P 500 closed flat on the day.
Net on the day, the Dow was up 27.86 at 19,890.87. The S&P 500 bounced off the 2272 level to 2282, and closed up just .68 at 2279.55. The Nasdaq 100 went from 5130 to 5159, and close up 35.92 at 5152.69.
Advance-declines were about 124 issues negative on the New York Stock Exchange, and about 50 issues negative on the Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 21 to 16 negative on New York, total volume of 3 3/4 billion shares traded. The Nasdaq traded 2.1 billion shares and had an 11 to 10 positive volume ratio.
TheTechTrader.com board was very mixed. Priceline.com (PCLN) was up 18 cents to 1575.31, Apple Inc. (AAPL) up 7.52 to 128.87, Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) up 8.71 to 832.19, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) up 7 cents to 140.78, but Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) was down 1.10 to 795.70.
Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) lost 1.25 to 173.82, Facebook, Inc. (FB) gained 2.91 to 133.23, another 3 1/2 points in after hours, and First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) climbed 60 cents to 31.79.
Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) lost 2.69 to 249.24.
Other stocks to the upside included NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) up 4.77 to 113.95, Twilio, Inc. (TWLO) up 1.22 to 30.05, Cara Therapeutics Inc. (CARA) up 1.17 to 16.49, and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) up a whopping 1.69 to 12.06.
On the downside, point-plus losers included NeuroDerm Ltd. (NDRM) dropped 1.00 to 23.05, Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) fell 1.07 to 63.58, and United States Steel Corp. (X) gave back 1.38 to 31.33.
Checking TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, Pulmatrix, Inc. (PULM) gained 1.58, or 74%, to 3.73, on 29.5 million shares traded, a 2100% increase. EnteroMedics Inc. (ETRM) jumped 2.09, or 33%, to 8.38, on 12.5 million shares traded.
Ferroglobe PLC (GSM), one of our recent swing trades, ran 1.74, or 17%, to 12.25, on 2.3 million shares traded. Summit Therapeutics plc (SMMT) bounced 1.46, or 14%, to 11.93. Arconic Inc. (ARNC) climbed 2.55, or 11%, to 25.28, on 16.4 million shares traded. Acxiom Corporation (ACXM) advanced 2.86, or 11%, to 28.96, on 1.8 million shares traded. Carbonite, Inc. (CARB) bounce 1.90, or 11%, to 19.15, on 1.1 million shares traded.
Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, after a big gap up in the morning, the indices came down hard, bounced around several times, held support, and finished much stronger on the Nasdaq 100 than the S&P 500, the Nasdaq 100 finishing solidly in the plus column, while the S&P 500 finished flat.
