HMRC Self Assessment Online Filing System Down as Tax Return Deadline 2017 Looms
Personal_Finance / UK Tax & Budget Jan 26, 2017 - 11:53 AM GMTHMRC's online system has been down for many if not most users for several hours today as the deadline for filing self assessment tax returns looms large (31st of Jan 2017). Tax payers trying to log into the system are typically met with the following message -
Clearly the HMRC system has been under heavy load all day in the run up to the filing deadline, and likely to persist especially during office hours. Therefore my best advice is to try the service again during the late evening or the early morning hours. If you are still unable to log in then keep a record of failed log in's i.e. screen shots if you end up filing your return late due to failure of HMRC system to work properly. However usually when there have been a series of similar disruptions to the HMRC's online service in past years, then the HMRC tends to extend the filing deadline by a few days, which increasingly looks probable this year.
Nevertheless, keep records and keep trying and wait for late evening when the site should be less busy, though not during the final 24 hours.
