Stock Market Excellent Day for Wall Street
Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2015 May 15, 2015 - 10:58 AM GMTThe stock market indices had a huge session today. The day started out with a breakaway gap, they ran sharply higher, running all day, and closing near the session highs going away.
Net on the day, the Dow was up 191.75 at 18,252.24. The S&P 500 was up 22.62 at 2121.10. The Nasdaq 100 was up 68.48 at 4495.04.
Advance-declines were 3 to 1 positive on New York Stock Exchange and 2 1/2 to 1 on Nasdaq.
Up/down volume was more than 2 to 1 positive on New York, with total volume of 3.16 billion shares. Nasdaq traded 1.7 billion shares, and had a better than 3 to 1 positive volume ratio.
TheTechTrader.com board was mixed, but very green. Leading the way, Priceline.com Incorporated (PCLN) was up 12.34 to 1190.09, Google Inc. (GOOG) up 8.78 to 538.40, Apple Inc. (AAPL) up 2.94 to 128.95, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) 5.41 to 432.28, and Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) 6.75 to 586.86.
Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) ran less than a point today, up just 92 cents to 244.10.
Other gainers of note included swing trade Cheetah Mobile Inc. (CMCM), up 2.02 to 28.85, Facebook, Inc. (FB), on 49 million shares, up 2.93 to 81.37, and SolarCity Corporation (SCTY), in a rather weak solar sector, 1.04 to 62.72.
On the downside, FireEye, Inc. (FEYE) was down 1.07 to 42.39, which was a bit of a surprise.
Checking the TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, leading the way was low-priced Dex Media, Inc. (DXM), up 27 cents to 1.35, or 25%, on nearly a million shares. Forbes Energy Services Ltd. (FES) ran to 2.59 before pulling back and closing up 30 cents to 1.64, or 22.4%, on 1.7 million shares. CYREN Ltd. (CYRN), on a contract with Dell, raised 42 cents to 3.43, or 14%, on 1.2 million shares.
A. M. Castle & Co. (CAS) ran 1.15 to 6.01, or 24%.
Youku Tudou Inc. (YOKU) was a standout today, up 3.35 to 22.84, or 17%, on 8.8 million shares.
Among other gainers, Clovis Oncology, Inc. (CLVS) had a big day, up 14.40 to 100.40, Invitae Corporation (NVTA) up 1.55 to 14.00, Straight Path Communications Inc. (STRP) up 2.13 to 23.36, Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (SSNI) 1.13 to 13.03, and Second Sight Medical Products, Inc. (EYES), on a breakout day, 1.08 to 12.71.
Ctrip.com International Ltd. (CTRP) popped 5.78 to 71.14, Perry Ellis International Inc. (PERY) gained 2.06 to 26.09, Hortonworks, Inc. (HDP) jumped 1.76 to 23.39, and Qunar Cayman Islands Limited (QUNR) ran 3.26 to 49.98.
Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, after a big gap up, and a 10-15 minute pullback, that was it, the indices went higher all day, closing at, or near, the highs for the day.
