The Global Warming Circus, Not It's Called Global Weirding
Politics / Climate Change Jan 01, 2013 - 09:43 AM GMTITS THE CLIMATE, STUPID
The art, not science of global warming has turned and twisted a lot since its early-2000's heydays during which the most outrageous charlatanism could bring big conference and meeting cash payoffs for stars of Climate Doom, such as Al Gore, James Lovelock, James Hansen and a gaggle of small-time hopefuls playing the same music, such as 'Whole Earth Catalog' inventor Stewart Brand. Oh yes, this was an epochal challenge for Humanity and we have to spend. Buy my latest book!
The global warming business has now officially shifted from fear of runaway global warming due to human emissions of CO2, to extreme weather fear. The shift has been in the works for years, but the now clear and known fact that global average temperatures have stalled - neither significantly up nor down - for about 15 years has accelerated the shift of global warming business hopefuls from “global warming” to “climate change”, and now to freak weather events and “global climate disruption.”
Some wags have suggested “global weirding” others suggest a “new normal” where nothing is normal. At the opening of the COP18 UN climate "summit" in Doha, Qatar, the UN's climate chief Christiana Figueres urged governments around the world to "do something about extreme weather".
In her own semi-autistic words, Figueres said: "We have had severe climate weather events all over the world and everyone is beginning to understand that is exactly the future we are going to be looking about if they don't now do something about it", which translated into normal language means we now have to "geoengineer" the weather and can forget about CO2 except when that generates easy pickings for "climate fund" bankers, brokers, traders and related parasites.
NATURE PLAYS TRICKS
In a marvelous example of Mother Nature playing big tricks on small-sized human being - especially bigmouth climate gurus like Gore and their small-sized Me Too hopeful imitators like Brand - record temperatures in the US, in summer 2012, prompted California Democrat Henry Waxman to blame CO2 for wildfires in Colorado and floods in Florida. He said: “It's time to stop denying science. Extreme events like the wildfires in Colorado and the floods in Florida are going to get worse unless the Republican-controlled Congress changes course soon".
Forgetting that CO2-filled fire extinguishers have been on the market a long time, and work, the rearguard action by defenders of what almost became a new tradition - CO2 hysteria - is itself a symptom of the morph: the evil gas CO2 is still working its cruel magic, but instead of just raising temperatures (or only doing it in the USA), it now causes "unprecedented weather events". These are described by Al Gore in his latest Bible-inspired writings on the subject as "practically like a nature hike through the book of Revelations".
Hurricane Sandy, to be sure, threw another big opportunity for hysteria mongers but on every key measure, claims of extreme weather anywhere in the world do not hold up to scrutiny. Deaths due to extreme weather are radically declining, global tropical cyclone activity is near historic lows, the frequency of major hurricanes has declined from its most recent peak in the 1940s, tornados have dramatically declined since the 1950s. Extreme rainfall in regions of persistent extreme or high drought (such as Sahel Africa) are good to place on view in the shopwindow of extreme weather events, but run against nearly 10 years of global warming doom talk which predicted ever-rising droughts in these regions. The sad-for-extremists reality is that both the incidence and severity of extreme weather has not increased, but weather disasters have become like crack cocaine to the climate community. Many of them are now hooked.
ONLY GLOBAL WARMING CAN SAVE US
Nobel science prizewinner Svante Arrhenius became interested in, and concerned by Ice Ages late in life and in 1896 was the first scientist to attempt calculating how changes in the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can or might warm or cool the planet. He thought life was probably carried from planet to planet by the transport of spores, now known as the Hoyle-Wickramasinghe panspermia theory but his concern with Ice Ages drove him to conclude that not Little Green Men but only human emissions of CO2 could delay - not prevent - another Ice Age and allow human beings to stave off mass famine and feed their growing population by extending cultivable land areas.
Arrhenius was not modest with his claimed precision for CO2 change and temperature change: he firstly said that a halving of CO2 would decrease temperatures by 4–5 degrees C and a doubling of CO2 would cause a temperature rise of 5–6 degC but within a couple of years of publishing his claims, in 1906, had changed these predictions to 1.6 °C and 2.1 °C. We could or might hope for a similar modest revision from the IPCC, which continues to claim that "climate sensitivity" or a doubling of CO2 levels will raise temperatures by 2 - 4.5 degC.
In many ways we can argue that global warming theory has merely backtracked a century, and inverted the fear: instead of fearing an Ice Age we are now asked to fear runway heating of the planet - and in the meantime we must shake with terror through freak weather events. The promoters of man-made climate change fear now declare that their pet process of CO2-driven runaway warming will firstly cause more and more bad weather events to happen. Since bad weather always happens, there will be no shortage of “proof' of their predictions: any freak weather event that happens “proves” their case, despite the fact that the current weather is neither historically unprecedented, nor unusual.
The not-well-hidden disarray among the CO2 hysterics - shown by arch doomster James 'Gaia' Lovelock bowing out, in April 2012 and admitting reality: he was wrong and had exaggerated the dangers "rather a lot" - has now produced the default call, at UN level, that governments should “do something” to stop bad weather. The mystical, theological, thaumaturgical or plain old New Age Gothic component is striking: we now have a mindset that is akin to Medieval witchcraft hunts where witches were blamed for cold spells, droughts, windstorms, floods, hailstorms or freak lightning which destroyed crops, caused ships to sink or scared horses and made cows abort. Not so far away from Mayan weather obsession, either, this default solution for global warming freaks has a lurking underlay of “weather Gods” who need ritualistic appeasement at the altar, anytime the weather turns bad.
ONLY GEOENGINEERING CAN SAVE US
Our modern leaders and scientists are not the first to think weather can be controlled, only the methods have changed. For the Maya, it was a good idea to chuck sacrificial human victims with their ribcages slashed open, to rip out their still beating hearts, into wells, springs and sinkholes of their karstic Yucatan territory - where "weather Gods" had caused the surface waters to disappear. Today, we need geoengineering. There is no alternative.
Geoengineering in fact is in no way an all-new idea, despite Bill Gates enthusiastically adopting it and financing it as a great new innovation - "doing something" about bad weather, formerly known as climate change. Soviet Russian geoengineering dates back more than 60 years, to aerial spraying of soot and silver iodide, and other pollutants and poisons, to supposedly "prolong growing seasons" or "cause rain". Above all however, the hysteria level has first to be talked up. US professor Michael Klare in Salon Magazine recently said: "If earth continues heating at its exponential rate, our post-apocalyptic fantasies could become everyday realities, We envision rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, freakish storms, hellish wildfires, and rising sea levels...food riots, mass starvation, state collapse, mass migrations, and conflicts of every sort, up to and including full-scale war".
The goals and methods of geoengineered "climate stability" are as we might expect, deliriously contradictory and different. The range is awesome for example including planned forest fires, and special fire retardant spraying of forests, artificially created seaboard fogs, and chemtrail spraying to accelerate fog dispersal - and probably the top: unspecified engineering methods that can either decrease Earth's rotation speed or increase it. Some of the geoengineers even say that the net result of their pet plan could be that maybe winters are warmer, maybe they are colder. Or just the same.
As we know (if we happened to believe Al Gore) record cold winters and blizzards are a direct result of man-made global warming, therefore any geoengineering process which can cool the planet will produce warmer or less severe winters. Despite Gore never once warning of record cold and increasing snowfall as a consequence of man-made global warming in his 'Inconvenient Truth' film, the peddlers of geoengineering have helped Gore remember that (additional, equally false) inconvenient truth.
This closely ties-in with the more reasonable Soviet-era Russian fear of snow, but as with Arrhenius and global warming, simply reversed or inverted. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the ill-famed hockey-stick climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the UK's University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”. "Children just aren't going to know what snow is", he said: but today, geoengineering grant grubbers and business plan writers are promising us warmer winters - through cooling the planet
