Russia’s Geo-political Natural Gas Game in Iran
Politics / Natural Gas Jul 21, 2010 - 06:13 PM GMTManinder Singh Batra writes: Since the reignition of the Great Game in Central Asia,Caspian sea and the middle east for control over oil and gas reserves,Russia and USA have been jockeying for control in these zones ,by any means whether covert or overt means such as bribery, colored revolutions, false flag operations and even outright war .
With oil reserves dwindling across the planet ,the cheap light crude oil reserves are available in Iran and Iraq , also some of the largest gas fields like South Pars gas field ,Which in terms of tonnage and BTUs dwarfs the Saudi Arabian Ghawar oil field in Iran .While the US position in the great game seemed pretty strong , but recently with the harsh sanctions the US and the West imposed on Iran was tantamount to shooting themselves in the feet. There are many reasons for this Because of the sanctions on the basis of the mythical Iranian nuclear weapons , Western companies lost their opportunity to invest in Iran like Norway Statoil had to withdraw from the Anaran oil field project, and instead the company that replaced it was GAZPROMNEFT.
It is the European Union that is the biggest loser of all , Because it lost the opportunity for developing the South Pars gas field and linking it with the Nabucco pipeline , and this played right into Russia’s and Gazprom’s hand , which does not want Iranian gas in the Nabucco pipeline , without which Nabucco is a pipedream and unfeasible .also it enables Gazprom an opportunity to divert the Iranian gas to Pakistan and India or leave it stranded , thus enabling Gazprom to have monopoly in the European gas market.
