But these large monolithic plants were costly ,took large time to build and were capital intensive .
But ,today ,a new approach is being adopted by the nuclear industry , a new approach has been developed .the approach of small modular reactors. There are several advantages of this approach :
- SMRs are simplified designs
- Superior safety by design
- No need for unnecessary safety systems
- Accelerated learning
- Short construction time
- Modular construction
- Distributed power generation
There are several designs of these kind of modular reactors:
- Babcock and Wilcox 150MW Modular LWR
- SVBR-100
- Hyperion Power Generation Uranium Hydride Reactor
- Chinese Pebble bed reactor
- Toshiba 4S
