Stock Market Rally Continues

The stock market indices gapped up at the opening, broke through resistance, and ran hard, particularly on Nasdaq today, reaching 2045 on the Nasdaq 100 in the morning and around the 1208 area on the S&P 500. The next couple hours were spent moving sideways and consolidating, but support held all afternoon and they bounced in the last hour.


Net on the day, the Dow was up more than 122 points at 11,167.32, the S&P 500 up 15.42 at 1206.77, and Nasdaq 100 was up 35.30 at 2042.89.

Advance-declines were about 3 to 1 positive on the New York Stock Exchange and about 3 to 1 positive on Nasdaq as well. Up/down volume was 4 to 1 positive on New York on total volume of about 1.4 billion. Nasdaq traded just under 3 billion and had about a 2 to 1 positive ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board had a big day today. Particularly strong were Baidu, Inc. (BIDU), which was the star of the day on big earnings and a 10 to 1 split, up 88.49 at 709.87. Apple (AAPL) jumped 7.04 to 268.64. Dendreon (DNDN) after drug approval today had its trading halted. The stock gapped up 10.56, closing at 50.18, trading to nearly 52 in the aftermarket.

Goldman Sachs Group (GS) was up 3.23 at 160.24, Google (GOOG) up 2.81 to 532, and Akamai Technologies Inc. (AKAM), one of our big trades today, up 6.45 to 39.63. Amazon.com (AMZN) jumped 2.38 to 141.73, and RAIT Financial Trust (RAS) was a big percentage gainer today, up 1.12 to 4.27 on 14.7 million.

Other gainers of note: TiVo Inc. (TIVO) jumped 74 cents to 18.38, Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS) 90 cents to 26.05, Delcath Systems (DCTH) 33 cents to 16.18, and China Automotive (CAAS) 43 cents to 22.16.

Brigham Exploration (BEXP) had a big day today, up 89 cents to 19.40, but after the close it was trading at more than 20 1/2 on positive news. Acme Packet, Inc. (APKT) jumped 76 cents to 21.07, but was trading at over 25 in the aftermarket. American International Group (AIG) was up 72 cents today at 40.23.

On the downside, the ETFs suffered greatly. UltraShort Real Estate ProShares (SRS) fell 2.22 to 24.30, the Direxion Daily Emerging Markets Bear 3x (EDZ) 2.25 to 40.98, and the Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3x (FAZ) 83 cents to 11.42. The Direxion Daily Real Estate Bear 3X Shares (DRV) lost 98 cents to 6.27, a big loss there.

Eastman Kodak Co. (EK) on earnings rolled over hard, closing down 1.41 to 6.94.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were up sharply all morning, consolidated in the afternoon, held support, and the rally continued today.
