Sky in recent months has been automatically putting sky boxes into standby during the night to save the planet by cutting back on electricity usage whilst the viewer is 'asleep'.

Unfortunately many older and even newer boxes are not able to cope with this daily switching between standby and on and are failing to come back out of standby. Sky customers phoning up sky for support are first led through the forced download procedure, which if it fails to bring the sky box back to life results in the customer being asked a £65+VAT fee for someone to come out and fix your digibox.

So, far from saving the planet, sky putting digiboxes into automatic standby is turning out to be nice little earner for Sky at £65+vat a pop, therefore another reason for customers to walk towards an alternative provider such as the cable as the recent changes to sky broadband also resulted in customers being charged double the fee whilst cutting bandwidth by 75%!
