Russia: How Financial "Complacency" Morphed into "Crisis" / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: EWI

It's been a tough year for Russia financially.

Of course, there's been the big collapse in oil prices, plus -- just like many other global stock indexes -- Russian stocks are well off their highs.

That's quite in contrast to 2019, when the RTSI index, a U.S. dollar-based index of 50 Russian companies, climbed 29%.

Shortly after registering that performance, Elliott Wave International's January Global Market Perspective, a monthly publication which covers 40-plus worldwide markets, showed this chart and said:

Russian Stock Market Great Long Term Buy: Inflation Down 50% YOY / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Sol_Palha

For a long time, we have been stating that the Sell-off in both the Ruble and the Russian stock market provided the astute investors with a great long-term buying opportunity.  Well, This chart proves that things are getting better and that the Sanctions that the West imposed on Russia at the behest of the America was a stupid idea, but more importantly, it has made Russia even stronger. The chart below is proof of this; inflation is down over 50% year over year. Translation things must be getting better.

Will the 1998 Russian Financial Meltdown Repeat Itself? / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Arkadiusz_Sieron

History never repeats itself exactly, but many similarities between the past and the current Russian crisis suggest that the eastern bear could significantly falter in the future:

  1. The collapse of the ruble and its scope (Graph 2). The ruble lost over two thirds of its value in 1998. In 2014 it has lost more than half of its value against the dollar. Also the ruble’s unusual one-day falls are similar: Russian currency plunged 22 percent December 15 and 16, 2014 -an echo of the 27 percent fall August 17, 1998.

How to Profit From Russia's Stock Market Crash / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Money_Morning

The collapse in oil prices has exposed some vulnerable economies. All of them are dependent upon crude export sales to maintain even the appearance of a national budget.

As you might expect, every member of OPEC falls into this group, although Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have sufficient reserves that will allow them to carry sizable budget deficits for some time.

Doug Casey on Russia and Russian Stocks / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Casey_Research

By Nick Giambruno

Nick: Okay Doug, so looking around, what markets look cheap to you today?

Doug: I saw recently that many stocks in Greece are selling at around four times earnings. But I don’t know what the quality of their earnings are. Of course, the dividend yield on Greek stocks isn’t very high, and dividends are, I think, the best real indicator of how much free cash flow there actually is in a company.

How to Profit from the Russia Ukraine Conflict / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Submissions

Ted Baumann writes: Russia has a history of sacrificing its own cities and people before giving in to the demands and confrontations of dissidents and aggressors. The situation is no different today. And for investors concerned with developing a fortified portfolio of diversified investments, it’s a situation you must pay attention to.

During 1941 to 1945, when it wore the mantle of the Soviet Union, Russia suffered almost 30,000,000 deaths — in combat, through Nazi atrocities and from civilian famine and disease. That was almost one-fifth of its pre-war population. The war was tilted so far out of Russia’s favor that at one point almost four-fifths of its European landmass was under Nazi control.

Investors - Why Russia is Hard to Ignore / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Frank_Holmes

Russian President Vladimir Putin created a stir recently when he shared his thoughts with Americans in an op-ed printed in The New York Times. According to The Times, very few pieces written by heads of state have been published by the paper and very few received the attention Putin attracted.

But will the plea be influential? Will it change President Barack Obama’s or Americans’ opinion on the matter of Syria?

There's Value Investing in Russia's Future / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Frank_Holmes

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAs Americans ponder the merits of Obama vs. Gingrich, Paul, Romney or Santorum, Russia will be electing its own president on March 4.

Perhaps we should say "re-electing" since it's almost certain former president and current prime minster Vladimir Putin will be elected. While protests and vocal opposition likely won't prevent Putin's presidential return, they have forced some interesting changes to the political climate and we've observed some positive changes in Russia's investment landscape.

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleL: Doug, I'm in Belarus this week, a pit stop to help some of my students with their various business ideas. I'm struggling with my Russian, but getting along. And that has me thinking about Russia's role on the global economic stage. I know this is something you've given some thought to... Russian Markets Lose $26 Billion To Dubai World Debt Default News / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Pravda

Dubai World state fund that found itself on a brink of default nearly caused a new world crisis. Due to the information about a possible collapse of the international logistics center, Russian stock market lost approximately $26 billion within a few minutes, experts say. The pa nic did not last long, and the Russian ruble only lost 20 kopeks. Yet, the experts believe that the Russian ruble may lose 10% of its value by the end of the year and another 10% in the first quarter of the next year. This will cause stagnation of the Russian economy and a possibility of a new devaluation.

Is the West Manipulating the Russian Stock Market? / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Ian_Brockwell

We have all seen considerable fluctuations on World Stock Markets before, but the recent fall witnessed on the RTS (Russian Trading System/Stock Market) has a hint of more than just a loss of confidence in the companies and Russia.

Since a peak in May of this year, we have seen a drop of 46 percent, creating a loss (on paper) of $700 billion! It seems odd that many of the companies hardest hit appear to be oil companies like: Rosneft, Lukoil and Gazprom.

Invest in Russia 2008 / Stock-Markets / Russia

By: Yiannis_G_Mostrous

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleI've long favored Russia as a destination for investment, building my case primarily around its energy sector. But I've also highlighted the increase in domestic demand and the infrastructure boom taking place there.

Russia is currently in a sweet spot: It's a net oil exporter, has good GDP growth, isn't dependent on foreign capital flows, is relatively stable politically, boasts reasonable market valuations and, above all, enjoys solid exposure to the biggest growth story of our time, Asia.
