This Will Change the Way You Think About Investing Forever / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Dr. Kent Moors writes: We've already made good money playing publically traded oil and gas companies.

125% on Cheniere... 200% on Halliburton... 210% on Western Refining... 542% on Westport Innovations... 300% on Golar LNG...

And given energy's across-the-board potential, our focus on growth isn't going to change.

Uncle Sam Is the World's Smartest Trader / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Robert Hsu writes: It's interesting that an investor in the "communist" Peoples' Republic of China can make millions tax-free... while investors in the United States - the supposed bastion of free enterprise and capitalism - have to pay, in some cases, a near-50% tax on investment gains.

If trading and investing is all about weighing risk and reward, then the tax code itself makes Uncle Sam the ultimate trader. He gets a nice chunk of your reward, even as he avoids your risk.

How to Become Your Own Central Bank / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Central banks may have foolish policies, but central bankers are no dummies.

They know exactly what they're doing. They even comprehend a few of the implications, too.

Which is why it's interesting that some American central bankers have suggested doing away with the debt ceiling altogether.

When the Offense Changes, the Defense Needs to Adapt / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

When it comes to just about any sport, you don’t blindly use a strategy without considering your opponent’s next move, his strengths, and his weaknesses. To win, you have to adapt.

While the investment world can seem like the same old game with the same old rules, it’s always changing around the edges. If you don’t adapt, you won’t win this game either. With the ten-year US Treasury recently closing as high as 2.98%, we face new threats, and the definition of a good defensive stock has changed accordingly. Now they must be defensive and immune to higher rates.

How to Make More Money Investing Than a Venture Capitalist / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Alex_Daley

Alex Daley writes: One set of investors has managed to catapult themselves to near-demigod status in recent years, with revelers hanging on their every word. They even have their own TV shows. Yet, with one simple investment, you could make double what they do. Here's how.

In some circles, they've become as iconic as Babe Ruth or Ted Williams. You overhear people talking about the time they met one in a surprise encounter in a swanky bar, as if they'd just brushed shoulders with a resident of Olympus. The mix of reverence, fear, and giddiness in the conversation is almost palpable.

Investors, Why There’s Still Old-Fashioned Treasure Out There / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Casey_Research

By Louis James, Chief Metals & Mining Investment Strategist

I've always wondered why we tend to glorify pirates and treasure hunters: the Indiana Joneses, the Jack Sparrows, the Long John Silvers. I think it's because most people, while it may not be reflected in their daily lives, are adventurers at heart.

How to Follow the Money / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Frank_Holmes

Too often investors get caught up in their political allegiance or parties, focus on the negative and lose confidence in stocks. As a result, they can miss great bull markets. I believe when it comes to finding investment opportunities, it’s not about the political party, it’s about the policies, both monetary and fiscal.

Investing When You Think We’re in a Bubble / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

Some folks may think we have returned to a pre-crash environment all over again, where the market moved on multi-year highs. Year to date, the major indexes are up roughly 15% depending on when you’re reading this article; and that’s on top of 7% returns from the year before and 5.5% the year before that. To the uninitiated, this almost looks like acceleration. To the more pessimistic, it looks like a trap: we’re in for a nasty correction that will pull down the entire market. You can’t turn on the television or read through a financial news website without being overwhelmed by stories telling us the market will crash in the next “X” number of weeks or months.

Investors Beware Higher Interest Rates Looming / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: InvestmentContrarian

George Leong writes: The rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage has been creeping up higher and just broke the four-percent threshold. This is a telltale sign that higher financing rates are on the horizon.

While there’s still hope that the Federal Reserve will hold off on reducing its bond buying at next week’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, the reality is that the money party is coming to an end.

Why Knowing the Currency Risk Can Pay Off In Investing / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: DailyGainsLetter

Moe Zulfiqar writes: Portfolio management is the key to growing savings over time. The implication behind this is that if an investor manages their portfolio regularly, adjusting asset classes based on market and economic conditions, they can reduce their risk and earn a decent rate of return, as well as peace of mind.

That said, investors need to look out for many different types of risks. To name a few, investors need to protect their portfolio from market fluctuations, reduce industry-specific risks, and keep in mind the rate of inflation.

Investors Scrambling for Low Risk Yields / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

With the Fed buying $85 billion in government debt every month, effectively holding interest rates far below the rate of inflation, many seniors are struggling to make ends meet. It is no wonder the Dow has hit an all-time high. But for the stock market, where else can we expect to find any return?

Simple Strategy for Outperforming Hedge Funds / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: DailyGainsLetter

Moe Zulfiqar writes: There’s often a debate among Main Street investors that institutional investors—more specifically, hedge funds—can provide better returns compared to managing the money by themselves. The main reason for this is that institutional investors have resources: for example, access to data, the ability to perform in-depth analysis, and so on and so forth.

The Time is Now for Your Income Plan / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

I have a friend who says, “Why make a decision today if it can be put off until tomorrow?”

While that might sound cute, waiting until the transmission on your car is totally broken and having the vehicle towed to a dealer for a trade-in certainly isn’t the optimal way to negotiate the price of a new vehicle. You can’t drive around and shop at other dealers to get a decent price.

What Does the Future Hold for the Average Investor? / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Julian_DW_Phillips

Four investors investing for retirement

Four investors with jobs outside the investment field are looking at what they should invest in so they can achieve a comfortable retirement. What should they consider when looking ahead?

These four investors have different ages, one with 10 years to retirement, one 20, one 30 and one forty years to go before they can sit on a beach, grey haired, a little portly, next to a surf board, feeling they can now age graciously, comfortable and without fear for their financial future. That's what so many believe the future holds for them. But is that realistic, can investments produce that for him?

How to Invest for QE Forever / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Diane Alter writes: When Ben Bernanke testified before Congress Tuesday and Wednesday, he staunchly defended his easy- money policies like quantitative easing, or "QE Forever."

"We do not see the potential costs of the increased risk-taking in some financial markets as outweighing the benefits of promoting a stronger economic recovery," the Federal Reserve chairman said.

Cash Alternatives: Making Money Work for You / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

Just what are "cash" and "cash options?" Some of us take those terms for granted, but after a recent article on sector allocation, one of our subscribers wrote in asking for clarification. Money Forever recommends holding approximately one-third of your portfolio in cash or cash options, but what does that really mean?

To clear up any confusion, "cash options" are not publicly traded options. "Cash alternative" is probably a more appropriate phrase.

Investors Scrambling for Returns in 2013 / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: John_Mauldin

In this special edition of Outside the Box, World Money Analyst contributor Ankur Shah digs in his heels to help us all stay uphill from the slow-motion, jumbled landslide of bond yields and equity returns. Putting some solid analysis under our feet, he leads us onward and upward, dodging dislodged corporate-earnings boulders, relaying warnings shouted back by Head Sherpa Bill Gross, guiding us up the narrow but rock-solid ridge of dividend yields – and what’s that we see glimmering up there, through the swirling mists; can it be this mountain really is capped with gold? To the summit, then!

In all seriousness, Ankur gives us a somewhat technical analysis of the potential for future stock-market returns. This makes a great companion piece to the work Ed Easterling and I did a few weeks back on secular bear markets. In short, the data are not consistent with the beginning of a new secular bull market. Returns are likely to be muted over the next few years.

Investing in a Low Economic Growth World / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: John_Mauldin

The jury – unless you are the Fed and Ben Bernanke or the Congressional Budget Office, which cannot make lower growth assumptions without really blowing their deficit projections out of the water – is pretty well in on GDP growth: it’s going lower. Ed Easterling and I wrote a recent Thoughts from the Frontline on multiple pieces of research suggesting slower future growth. We asked the question, “So what about stock prices; will they follow suit?” Our thought was that, over time, they would.

How to Invest in 2013 Without Losing Your Shirt / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Steve Christ writes: What a long, strange trip it has been. Roughly four years after falling to 6,600, the Dow pushed back above 14,000 last week.

Of course, you would think that such a climb would be cause for some euphoria. But reading the mail that comes into Money Morning each day leaves me with another impression entirely.
