Equities And Treasuries Forecasting Past Recessions / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010
By: Tony_Pallotta
One thing the 2007 recession taught us is how horrible the equity market was at forecasting economic contraction. The S&P 500 peaked in October 2007, just two months before the recession officially began. By contrast the 2001 recession saw the S&P 500 peak nine months earlier.

How to Profit as Consumers Tighten Their Purse Strings / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010
By: MoneyWeek
If you're expecting a brief round of belt-tightening before things return to normal, you'll be disappointed. It's time to get defensive, says David Stevenson.
A seismic shift is starting, both in Britain and America, in the way that people spend – or save – their cash. And it could flag the biggest change in consumer behaviour for 50 years.

Urgent Financial and Economic Crisis Investment Strategy Update / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010
By: Money_and_Markets
Hello — this is Martin Weiss with an important strategy update.
It’s only fair to acknowledge that the economic depression I foresaw in my book and in my reports is unfolding more slowly than I had expected.

Stocks Bull Market Bullish Bias, "This Time its Different" / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010

This Time It's Different*

I have often written that the four most dangerous words in the investment world are "This Time It's Different." If memory serves me, I have written several e-letters disparaging various personages who have uttered those very words, and gone one to confirm later that it wasn't different. It almost never is.

The Impact of Economic Data Revisions at Stock Market Junctures / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010

Can I Have Some More of that Data, Please?
The Fault, Dear Brutus, is Not in Our Stars
Faith-Based Economics
Is Unemployment a Lagging or a Leading Indicator?
An Unsustainable Trend in Debt
Some Thoughts on the Health Care Problem
Why does government data need to be revised so often? Is it conspiracy, as some claim, or is it methodology? And if it is methodology that leads to faulty data, then why not change the methodology? Is unemployment a lagging indicator, as conventional wisdom suggests? We look again at the underlying assumptions to suggest that things are not always the same. And finally, we look at unsustainable trends, fiscal deficits, and health care -- there is a connection.

Strategic Economic, Financial Markets and Geopolitical Forecasts for 2nd Quarter 2009 / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010
By: John_Mauldin
Dear Friends: I've been in this business a long time. Some days it feels like a very long time. But never in all the years that I've been in the financial markets have I felt like business per se has less impact on my investment decisions. Let me explain.
GM shares have gone from being a claim on earnings from car sales to being a call option on whether the US government will extend another lifeline. Banks' capital structures have gone from being the province of Boards of Directors and CFOs to the "expertise" of Congressional committees and appointed regulators. Used to be when I thought about Financial Centers New York and London came to mind. Instead now I have to think about Washington and Brussels.

U.S. Economy Contracts 3.8% as Wallstreet Rewards Failure with Bailout Cash / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010
By: Anthony_Cherniawski
The U.S. economy shrank the most in the fourth quarter since 1982 as consumer spending recorded the worst slide in the postwar era, a trajectory that's likely to continue in coming months.
The 3.8 percent annual pace of contraction was less than forecast, with a buildup of unsold goods cushioning the blow. Excluding inventories, the decline was 5.1 percent, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. A survey of purchasing managers also indicated today that business in January was the weakest in almost 27 years.

Cassandra John Paulson Hedge Fund Manager Makes Billions from the Financial Crisis / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010
By: Oxbury_Research
As expected, the Federal Reserve kept its key interest rate near 0% and claimed it stands ready to take additional steps such as purchasing longer-term Treasury bonds if such a move will help get credit flowing once again.
It seems their logic is that lowering the yield on government bonds will spur other lenders to lower their own yields. Hmmm, isn't the mantra of cheaper money everywhere sounding familiar? Why, of course it is.

Extreme Stock Market Volatility as Corporate America Heads Towards Bankruptcy / Stock-Markets / Recession 2008 - 2010
By: Prieur_du_Plessis
The Oxford Dictionary defines “volatility” as “liable to change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse”. It's not as if investors do not know this by now, as global stock markets were again subjected to extreme fluctuations during the past week.
The red line in the chart below shows the daily percentage change in the S&P 500 Index, illustrating the severe movements stock markets have seen in recent times.
