War on the Horizon as Defense Stocks Outperform / Companies / Sector Analysis

By: Clif_Droke

After two years of winding down the U.S. military's presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, the rumblings of war are being felt in Syria. Calls for American intervention in Syria's civil war have been increasing lately, especially after reports indicate that Syria's government used chemical weapons on civilians.

According to a Reuters /Ipsos poll, 60 percent of Americans surveyed said they don't favor the U.S. intervening in Syria, even if it's confirmed that chemical warfare is being used in that country. Only 9 percent believe President Obama should act now.

Time for Income-Starved Investors to Reconsider REITs? / Companies / Housing Stocks

By: DailyGainsLetter

John Paul Whitefoot writes: After a serious pullback in May, is it time for income-starved investors to reconsider real estate investment trusts (REITs)? Or will America’s favorite sugar daddy, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, tease investors with ongoing threats of tapering?

The North American REIT bull market was stopped dead in its tracks on May 22, after Bernanke hinted the central bank might begin tapering its massive $85.0-billion-per-month government bond-buying program.

Investing in Australian Stocks for Faster, Asset-Backed Growth / Companies / Austrailia

By: Money_Morning

Martin Hutchinson writes: I like Australia's stock market right now. I think it provides you with a ton of upside potential.

Virtually every analyst on Wall Street disagrees, of course. They hate Australia. But they didn't like Chile, either, where we're up 46%. And they weren't crazy about Indonesia - another market that's making us good money.

Utility Stocks - Today’s Best Bond Alternative / Companies / US Utilities

By: Charles_Carnevale

To refer to any stock or equity as an alternative to bonds or fixed income is sure to stir up the ire and consternation of many professional and individual investors alike who deem themselves prudent.  Frankly, under normal circumstances I would tend to agree.  But the nature of bonds and other fixed income instruments are not normal today.  With today’s extreme, and in the minds of many, contrived low level of interest rates, the risk profile of bonds and fixed income are far from typical.  More simply stated, the currently extreme low level of interest offered by bonds and other fixed income instruments have dramatically altered, and I contend, increased their risk profile.

Big Data - How the New "New Money" Will Be Made / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Tara Clarke writes: If you're an investor, there's a term you need to know: Big Data.

Data - just the word itself - is the most boring abstraction in the world. The meaning of the word "data" itself is, well, meaninglessness. That's the point.

The Truth About Stocks Today / Companies / Stock Market Valuations

By: DailyWealth

Steve Sjuggerud writes: "Stocks are up over 100% since 2009. They're way too expensive now... You shouldn't buy."

I hear this all the time. Frankly, I've heard it so much, I'm tired of hearing it... It's just so plain wrong!

It's true that stocks are up over 100% since 2009. But that doesn't mean stocks are too expensive...

Still Time to Catch Big Growth in Biotech Stocks / Companies / BioTech

By: TLSReport

Biotech has had a scorching run for more than a year and a half, but as broader markets approach more realistic valuations with less potential upside, it becomes even more important to be invested in the right companies with truly meaningful catalysts on the horizon. How JPMorgan and the London Whale Can Sink Your Stocks Portfolio / Companies / Banksters

By: Money_Morning

Greg Madison writes: In the spring of 2012, JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s (NYSE: JPM) not-so-rogue trader, Bruno Iksil, better known as the London Whale, made a series of derivatives trades on credit default swaps that only appeared to be unauthorized.

In reality, those trades were just one side of JPMorgan betting against the other in a doom struck hedging strategy.

Obama Wades In on the Apple-Samsung Patent War / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Greg Madison writes: President Barack Obama added an unexpected twist to the patent wars when he took the extraordinarily rare step of vetoing the International Trade Commission's own trade sanctions against Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) last week.

The trade commission had ruled that Apple violated some of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd's patents, and the commission was set to ban outright several key Apple products, such as the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and the iPad 2 and 3G models - all sold by AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), among others.

The Technological Evolution of Nonlethal Weapons / Companies / Technology

By: Casey_Research

By Doug Hornig, Senior Editor

The rise of humans from fearful creatures huddled around cave fires to the dominant species on the planet largely parallels the evolution of weaponry. Different subgroups rose and fell, spreading their culture or declining in influence as they either came up with the new best thing with which to slaughter their neighbors or fell behind in the innovation game.

Club, axe, spear, atlatl, sword, longbow, crossbow, catapult, gun, bomb, artillery, really big bomb—all have had their day.

Improve The Productivity Of Your Dividend Growth Portfolio With Technology Stocks / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Charles_Carnevale

Introduction and General Observations of the Information Technology Sector

Dividend growth investors seeking quality dividend growth stocks to fund their retirement portfolios have not historically looked to the Information Technology sector.  Traditionally, the Information Technology sector has been associated with higher growth and higher risk. However, in addition to higher growth, many technology companies are also very cyclical in nature. Another common attribute for tech companies is how they have traditionally utilized their capital.  In order to finance their high-growth needs, the majority of Information Technology companies have traditionally not paid dividends. Instead, they used their capital to fund future growth.  However, another contributing factor to the no dividend policy of Information Technology companies was the nascent nature of this industry.

Is The Financial Crisis Over For Financial, Banking Stocks? / Companies / Banking Stocks

By: Charles_Carnevale

The cause of the financial crisis of 2007 -2008, also known as the Great Recession of 2008, is attributed to many different theories.  However, one of the most common theories is an easy money regulatory environment that led to an abundance of subprime loans, which in turn inflated real estate prices to bubble levels.  Additionally, many blame the Financial sector, predominantly the money center banks, for exploiting the lax lending requirements with reckless and greedy behavior.  They did this through the creation of and proliferation of high risk bundled subprime mortgages (CMO’s, etc.) and the creation of other high risk and complex financial products that were being pawned off as safe investments.

Additionally, many attribute the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 as a major contributor to the financial crisis, which effectively removed the separation between investment banks and depository banks in the United States.  There was plenty of blame to go around, which included avarice, greed and excesses on Wall Street, and the failure of regulators to include many of the most prominent credit rating agencies.

Amazon.com Creates 5,000 Jobs, Destroys 25,000 in the Process? / Companies / Employment

By: Alex_Daley

The Technology Jobs Conundrum

The past few weeks have seen the tech and business media abuzz about a not-so-little warehouse in Tennessee. That's because this distribution center, opening its doors with a burst of fanfare and even a few visits from nearby politicians, isn't a jumping-off point for Macy's or Target. Instead, the warehouse is the latest in a series of new locations being opened by retail technology giant Amazon.com.

The jobs this new mega-warehouse is purported to create: 5,000.
