Labour Sheffield City Council Halts Tree Fellings Ahead of May Local Elections

Local / Sheffield Mar 26, 2018 - 06:16 PM GMT

By: N_Walayat

Local

The Labour controlled Sheffield City Council announced a halt to the controversial street trees felling programme today that had seen escalating protestor opposition on the streets of Sheffield against the felling of healthy trees that followed the revelation that half of Sheffield's street trees would be felled during the life time of the 25 year PFI contract with Amey..

Since the resumption of felling a month ago the streets of Sheffield have been witness to very heavy police and security presence at felling sites, with upwards of 30 police officers and 20 Hiviz security all towards enabling felling if a single tree. Which has galvanised the people of Sheffield to come out and protest in their hundreds each day against the felling of healthy street trees that tends to result in multiple arrests at each felling site on a daily basis.

For instance here the Police arrested a woman on Rivelin Valley Road for just blowing a toy trumpet!

And earlier on the same day an elderly tree protestor was also aggressively arrested under suspicion of causing an obstruction of the highway (S303 Highways Act 1980).

And in this video on Thornsett Road the Police hunt down and arrest a Bunny which is a protestor who attempts to prevent a felling by getting close to a cordoned off street tree.

And this video explains what the terms Bunnies and Geckos mean in the contest of Sheffield's street tree fellings protests.

And here police snatch squads are seen in operation grabbing protestors on their way home from street felling sites.

Again Abbeydale Park Rise saw numerous arrests, and at least one person injured as a consequence the deployment of such huge Police manpower against peacefully demonstrating residents.

Whilst here a police officer explains to protestors why they will be arrested under Highways Act legislation.

Meanwhile Sheffield's roads are in an atrocious condition, littered with car damaging potholes as the council's resources were diverted towards the felling street trees instead of filling the potholes and fixing Sheffield's roads.

A growing peaceful street revolution was / is under way against the ruling Labour establishment in the countdown to the May 2018 Local elections, so it should not come as any surprise with the election just 6 weeks away that Sheffield's ruling Labour regime has decided to suspend tree fellings rather than face the consequences at the ballot box for its increasingly unpopular actions on Sheffield's streets that now resemble what one would find in a totalitarian eastern european state.

And where the local elections are concerned the Green Party that has opposed the PFI contract with Amey right from the beginning could see their number of councilors double from 4 to 8, which means they may just manage to hold the balance of power in a hung council.

Nevertheless, the street tree fellings have been halted until AFTER the 3rd of May local elections, with as expected the mainstream press basically publishing SCC press releases as if they were news. Giving the false impression that the council seeks dialogue when in reality the Labour run council seeks preventing loss of seats at the local elections, following which it will likely be business as usual.
