Murder at Newtown, America's Moral Bankruptcy

Politics

Kate Randall of WSWS.com asked the important question in her coverage of the Newtown, Connecticut massacre of December 14. She lamented: "What intellectual bankruptcy! No US government official or media personality has the mental capacity or courage to ask why these horrible tragedies occur in America with such heartbreaking predictability."

But beneath and beyond "intellectual bankruptcy" is MORAL bankruptcy. I believe many readers here agree that half the reasons for these acts of pure violence can be found lurking in the American bloodstream where viral cells of hate, violence, aggression, warmongering and systemic corruption have over-populated the body (particularly in this Century) and been given laissez-passer in politics, the military, the corporations, banking, the investment classes and–as it logically follows–the media, which reflect the virus as either non-existent or localized. In short, all these power-centers are culpable, and that is why they remain silent. This is a "devil's pact" that prevails in a degenerating empire.

President Obama will deplore and grieve the dead children in Connecticut on Friday and on the following Tuesday approve the assassination of faceless enemies in the Mid-East; oversee deaths committed daily by US drones in Pakistan and Afghanistan; and starve kindergarten children in Iran through sanctions. He will give no heed to his own immorality; he will not grieve at the graves of innocent Iraqi woman and children struck down by acts of genocide and mass murder committed by American and NATO forces; nor will anyone question these violent acts (committed on a scale a million times greater than Newtown, Milwaukee, Aurora or Virginia Tech). But America's violence at home–now infecting its population at an accelerated rate–stems from the very same virus responsible for its hegemonic wars and any of its violent acts conducted in the world.

I once felt that America needed no outside enemies to destroy it because it would destroy itself–such is the law of nature and the law of sowing and reaping. As people from other countries write and ask "why so many mass-murders in America?", no answers suffice other than to explain that the patient is dying from its own disease. Except the virus now has become a cancer.

And that cancer is: moral bankruptcy.

PS: As a believer in the "afterlife", I remain assured the children of Newtown are OK.

It is "we" who are not.
