Ash Dieback Disease, Britain's Tree Holocaust, 90% Could be Wiped Out
Politics / Environmental Issues Nov 09, 2012 - 07:03 PM GMTBritain faces an unprecedented holocaust as waves of wind borne plagues threaten to annihilate as much as 90% of Britain's tree population.
The last great plague was that of the 1970's Dutch Elm disease which killed 90% of Britain's ancient elm trees that numbered around 30 million (10% of Britain's trees).
The latest plague goes by the name of "Ash Dieback disease" that emerged in Denmark less than 10 years ago who's impact will be on an even greater scale that threatens to wipe out Britain's 90 million Ash Trees that comprise 30% of Britain's tree population.
The current Ash tree crisis is just the tip of an ice-berg as there are dozens more pathogens threatening Britain's main tree species that look set to breakout in a series of outbreaks that look set to decimate Britain's tree's as each species is annihilated one by one, which means that in the not too distant future Britain's landscape will be littered with dead, rotting trees at various states of collapse that will have an environmental and economic impact in terms of fall out on industries reliant on forestry and wildlife.
The only hope for Britain's trees is for for the landscape to be eventually repopulated from the remaining disease resistant survivors, i.e. natural selection.
