Is Coca-Cola Still the "Real Thing" For Stock Investors? / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

David Mamos writes: Suffice it to say, Coke has been a big part of our culture for over 100 years.

When I was growing up I wasn't shy about shaking a malfunctioning vending machine whenever my craving for an icy cold Coke kicked in.

But lately, have you noticed you are more likely to grab a Starbucks coffee for your caffeine fix?

Stock Market Breakouts All Around; Final Countdown or the Beginning of a New Cycle? / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Profit_Confidential

So many blue chips are pushing their all-time record highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has been leading the stock market breakout, along with the Dow Jones Transportation Average.

The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE/HD) continues to be a powerhouse stock, more than doubling since October 2011. This position is in its own mini bull market, after a sustained period of sideways trading for 12 years.

Can Xerox Survive in a Paperless World? / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

David Mamos writes: Xerox (NYSE: XRX) may have been an iconic part of 20th century Americana but these days it's still in the process of trying to find its way into the 21st century.

In a suddenly more paperless society, the company that revolutionized how businesses operate with its superior copiers and printers is struggling to stay relevant.

Dow’s “Dogs” Could Be Key to Stock Market Success / Companies / Investing 2013

By: InvestmentContrarian

George Leong writes: The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied for 10 straight days and, in the process, established several record highs. And while the Wall Street bulls are glorifying the upward move, I continue to believe a correction is on the way—I just can’t tell you when or by how much. The thing I would warn you against is chasing dividends on Dow stocks. The average dividend yield on the 30 Dow stocks currently sits around 2.82%.

Growing Dividends, Stock Buybacks Helping Investors Beat Market Gyrations / Companies / Investing 2013

By: InvestmentContrarian

Sasha Cekerevac writes: When it comes to long-term investing, one factor that needs to be considered is that the dividend yield can provide a large portion of the total return. While everyone likes to pick the highflier that will move up a tremendous amount, the truth is that having a portfolio of stocks that continually increase their dividend yield can help increase total returns of a portfolio.

It is expected that for 2013, S&P 500 companies will pay out at least $300 billion in dividends. This is an even higher amount than the $282 billion paid in dividends for 2012. (Source: Demos, T., Russolillo, S., and Jarzemsky, M., “Firms send record cash back to investors,” Wall Street Journal, March 7, 2013.)

Three Safe Stocks to Buy in a High-Flying Market / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Martin Hutchinson writes: Even though the Dow Jones Industrial Average has reached record highs, investing hasn't got any easier. When the markets make a major move higher, investors always run the risk of buying at the top.

It's called chasing momentum and it can be damaging to your portfolio.

That's what happened to Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) shareholders who jumped in at $700 only to watch as the price later dropped to less than $420/share. With little change in the company's outlook, Apple investors who bought near the peak managed to lose 40% in a bull market.

By: Axel_Merk

Financial writer and best-selling author Peter Sander sits down with portfolio manager Axel Merk for insights on investment considerations in light of the risks posed to the greenback.

5 Tips for Investing in Mutual Funds / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

In one our recent issues subscriber Jory G. sent us the following question:

“I have a 401(k) with my present employer that has a number of investment options, virtually all of which are mutual funds. Is it possible for Mr. Miller to address in a future letter what we might do to maximize growth or minimize loss in such programs? I realize there are many different 401(k) programs out there, but I just feel overwhelmed when trying to decide which of the funds provide the best growth/protection.”

How to Invest for QE Forever / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Diane Alter writes: When Ben Bernanke testified before Congress Tuesday and Wednesday, he staunchly defended his easy- money policies like quantitative easing, or "QE Forever."

"We do not see the potential costs of the increased risk-taking in some financial markets as outweighing the benefits of promoting a stronger economic recovery," the Federal Reserve chairman said.

Cash Alternatives: Making Money Work for You / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

Just what are "cash" and "cash options?" Some of us take those terms for granted, but after a recent article on sector allocation, one of our subscribers wrote in asking for clarification. Money Forever recommends holding approximately one-third of your portfolio in cash or cash options, but what does that really mean?

To clear up any confusion, "cash options" are not publicly traded options. "Cash alternative" is probably a more appropriate phrase.

Investors Scrambling for Returns in 2013 / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: John_Mauldin

In this special edition of Outside the Box, World Money Analyst contributor Ankur Shah digs in his heels to help us all stay uphill from the slow-motion, jumbled landslide of bond yields and equity returns. Putting some solid analysis under our feet, he leads us onward and upward, dodging dislodged corporate-earnings boulders, relaying warnings shouted back by Head Sherpa Bill Gross, guiding us up the narrow but rock-solid ridge of dividend yields – and what’s that we see glimmering up there, through the swirling mists; can it be this mountain really is capped with gold? To the summit, then!

In all seriousness, Ankur gives us a somewhat technical analysis of the potential for future stock-market returns. This makes a great companion piece to the work Ed Easterling and I did a few weeks back on secular bear markets. In short, the data are not consistent with the beginning of a new secular bull market. Returns are likely to be muted over the next few years.

Investing in a Low Economic Growth World / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: John_Mauldin

The jury – unless you are the Fed and Ben Bernanke or the Congressional Budget Office, which cannot make lower growth assumptions without really blowing their deficit projections out of the water – is pretty well in on GDP growth: it’s going lower. Ed Easterling and I wrote a recent Thoughts from the Frontline on multiple pieces of research suggesting slower future growth. We asked the question, “So what about stock prices; will they follow suit?” Our thought was that, over time, they would.

Investment Opportunity Due to a S&P Lawsuit? / Companies / Investing 2013

By: InvestmentContrarian

Sasha Cekerevac writes: Sometimes the best investment opportunity arises when a situation looks the bleakest. When a firm’s earnings outlook is stable and there is little volatility in the stock, this makes it extremely difficult to identify an investment opportunity, since all the good news is usually priced into the stock.

An interesting situation is taking place now, and I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner. The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is taking the Standard & Poor’s (S&P) unit of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. (NYSE/MHP) to court, alleging that the ratings agency was involved in fraudulent activities.

How to Think about Stock Prices in Today’s Volatile Markets / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Charles_Carnevale

Price volatility is an unavoidable aspect of investing in common stocks. During periods when emotions are dominating reason, price volatility can become more pronounced than is normal during calmer times. The insidious part of this fact is that the more volatile stock prices are, the more fear and stress they generate, which only feeds even greater volatility. Of course, the same can be said when greed raises its ugly head. The purpose of this article is to provide some logic and reason that can be applied to stock price volatility that simultaneously weakens its potential damage.

How to Invest in 2013 Without Losing Your Shirt / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Steve Christ writes: What a long, strange trip it has been. Roughly four years after falling to 6,600, the Dow pushed back above 14,000 last week.

Of course, you would think that such a climb would be cause for some euphoria. But reading the mail that comes into Money Morning each day leaves me with another impression entirely.

The Biggest Risk – And Greatest Reward – Facing Your Portfolio Today / Portfolio / Investing 2013

By: Investment_U

Alexander Green writes: Virtually every American knows Uncle Sam is carrying a gargantuan debt and that we face sharply higher deficits in the future. What you may not know is how bad the situation really is, how much worse it will soon become, how widespread the problem around the world, and how little will be done about it anytime soon.

How You Can Profit from the Currency Wars / Companies / Investing 2013

By: InvestmentContrarian

Sasha Cekerevac writes: Recently, we have heard a lot about currency wars being waged by various nations around the world. To those who are unfamiliar, “currency war” is a term that refers to countries that are actively looking to devalue their currency to help stimulate export growth and their domestic economy.

Investing in stocks in this type of environment can be tricky, as one needs to add additional variables to the analysis. Having a strong market sector, solid long-term fundamentals of the individual stock, and a favorable currency direction can help when considering investing in stocks.

Who is Warren Buffett?, The Graham-Buffett Investing Strategy / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Submissions

J. Royden Ward writes: Warren Buffett is my hero. In my mind, he is the best investor ever. If you had invested in one share of his Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) 25 years ago when it sold for a mere $3,030 per share, your one share would now be worth $143,000 today. The increase works out to a compound annual growth rate of 16.7%. You would have doubled your investment every four and a half years!

Investors Must Resolve to Follow the Money In 2013 / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Frank_Holmes

During these first days of January, many adopt an "out with the old, in with the new," approach to shed bad habits or extra pounds. Washington opted for its same ol' strategy when averting the "fiscal cliff," as the addictive nature of "can-kicking is a transatlantic sport," according to The Economist. The magazine suggests that the deal made in the 11th hour is "disturbingly similar to the eurozone's." The short-term fix did "nothing to control the unsustainable path of 'entitlement' spending on pensions and health care ... nothing to rationalize America's hideously complex and distorted tax code... and virtually nothing to close America's big structural budget deficit."
