Vote Now - Are the British Personnel Right to Sell their Iranian Capture Stories

Politics / Iran Apr 07, 2007 - 09:41 PM GMT

Politics

The 15 British Navy personnel that were released by Iran on Thursday have been given the green light to sell their stories to the media. It is likely that some stories could sell for more than ten times their annual salaries. Especially from the only woman captive, Faye Turney, who is expected to earn the most.

The captives had been held by the Iranians for 13 days, following the seizure of their patrol boats by the Iranian Revoluntionary Guards on the Shatt-Al Arab Waterway. The Iranians subsequently had used the captives for propaganda purposes on Iranian media coverage shown during the 13 day period. This culminated in a 2 hour press conference on Thursday by the Iranian president, followed by the surprise announcement that the captives would be released as an 'Easter Gift to the British People'

Unfortunately the release of the captives coincided with the deaths of 4 British Military personnel in Iraq which included 2 women. And therefore the decision to allow the personnel to sell their stories is attracting much criticism from the families of the dead personnel and opposition politicians.

Additionally, the selling of the stories is likely to result in the actual events being 'beefed up' for dramatic effect, with some of the commentary by the military personnel on their ordeal, having been shown as having inconsistency in statements. Thus it is likely to prey into the argument that as the Iranians undertook propaganda so are the British, with the actual truth lost in lieu of financial recompense and politics by both sides.

The Market Oracle Opinion Poll : Are the British Military Personnel Right to Sell their Stories for Personal Profit to the Media ?

Yes - They are Right to Sell their stories for personal profit.

NO -They should Not be allowed to Sell their stories to the media.
