The stock market indices started the week off with an interesting day today and finished mixed on the session. The day started out with a move up in the morning in a 5-wave advance, they pulled back in the afternoon, that held support, they rallied to nominal new highs with about forty minutes to go, and then backed off into the close to close mixed.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 15.82 at 17,229.13, 45 points off the high. The S&P 500 was down 2.55 to 2019.64, 6 points off its high. The Nasdaq 100 was up 5.50 to 4367.33, about 11 off its high.

Advance-declines were 16 to 13 negative on New York Stock Exchange, and 15 to 12 3/4 negative on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 7 to 4 positive on New York, total volume of 3.4 billion shares traded. The Nasdaq traded 1.7 billion shares and had an 8 to 7 positive volume ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board consisted of mostly fractional gains and losses. Priceline Inc. (PCLN) was down 1.14 to 1325.73, but Google Inc. (GOOG) was up 3.67 to 730.39, Apple Inc. (AAPL) up just 26 cents to 102.52, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) up 3.76 to 573.37, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) also up just a fraction, 47 cents to 98.13.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) was up 7.65 to 215.15, on an upgrade, but Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) gave back 96 cents to 182.02. Facebook, Inc. (FB) climbed 48 cents to 109.89, and First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) gained 57 cents to 70.89.

3D Systems Corporation (DDD) reached as high as 14.97 before pulling back and closing up 2.90 to 14.45, on 17 million shares.

Zynerba Pharmaceuticals (ZYNE) ran 12.59 to 21.03, or 150%, on 4.5 million shares, 5600% more volume than average. GW Pharmaceuticals plc (GWPH) advanced 46.25 to 84.71, or 120%, on 10.5 million shares.

That was two biotech stocks that were up 120% plus on a day like today. That’s pretty amazing.

Checking the TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, snapping back 90 cents to 7.92, or 13% is an old swing trade of ours, Sientra, Inc. (SIEN).

Teekay Offshore Partners LP (TOO) climbed 1.27 to 5.07, or 33%, on 5.7 million shares. Energous Corporation (WATT) popped 1.16 to 7.91, or 17%, on 1.2 million shares. Zogenix, Inc. (ZGNX) bounced 1.59 to 10.35, or 18%, on 1 million shares. Kandi Technologies Group, Inc. (KNDI), on a strong earnings report, thrust 1.48 to 9.23, or 19%, on 3.333 million shares.

Flex Pharma, Inc. (FLKS) reached its peak in midaftetnoon to 10.42, but pulled back and closed up 2.44 to 10.06, or 32%. INSYS Therapeutics, Inc. (INSY) ran to 21.21 earlier in the day, and closed up 1.93 to 18.89, or 11%, on 2.3 million shares.

The Direxion Daily Gold Miners Bear 3X ETF (DUST) had a big day as gold got hammered, up 45 cents to 4.05, or 12.5%, on 63 million shares.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were down at the opening, they bounced, rallied in a five-wave advance to midday when they then backed off to consolidate, retested, and did so successfully. With about 35-40 minutes to go, the market reached its high on a spike, they rallied, and then rolled over into the close, and were particularly down in the last five minutes, which kept them from having a positive close.

The market had somewhat of a positive day, so let’s see what happens.

Good Trading!
